It's Tomb Raider Tuesday! Join me today as I guide you through a bunch of Easter Eggs from the classic Tomb Raider games, as well as other video games that reference Tomb Raider.
An interesting one is in the film 'The Descent', where one character says "I'm not bloody tomb raider".
It's particularly amusing because that film became one of the defining inspirations for the reboot trilogy, with the climbing picks being used, several shots being recreated, and even the outfit Lara wears looking suspiciously similar to one from the film.
wait was the reboot really inspired by that??
Interesting, I need to check that out! Thanks
She also lands in a pool of human blood among a charnel house of corpses and bones in a cave, before resurfacing very slowly and clearly terrified. This was also in The Descent where the final girl does the same, before getting attacked by a crawler/ghoul stalking her in the pool. After killing it, she screams in terror and despair. The final desperate climb out of the cave at the end (sadly a hallucination in the original UK version ending here, which sucks) where the girl climbs up a steep slope to a tiny opening under the roots of a tree directly inspired Lara doing the same to escape from the sea caves at the beginning of TR2013, root cave and all.
TR0 (2013) is what inspired me to watch The Descent a few years ago when I saw it on the telly while on holiday at the Scottish coast and I loved it so I got the DVD and that of its sequel. It was filmed in Scotland’s mountains too, though it takes place in America.
There is another Indiana Jones easter egg in Tomb Raider 2. One of the two first rolling boulders you encounter in the game has a unique texture. You will find Indiana's squashed hat on it, I think his whip as well.
Oh really!? That's awesome. I need to check that out as well.
@@AxMania did you know that Lara croft was supposed to be a man that reference Indiana Jones and was changed in to Lara croft the baddas now all we have is emotional Lara that no longer uses her pistols
I heard of that easter egg in Tomb Raider Anniversary: Tomb of Qualopec.
@@skypemee4040 Yeah. She also was supposed to be a supporting character for a male character. Thank goodness Toby Gard fell in love with Lara and decided to make her the main and only protagonist.
EDIT: Some people are misunderstanding my words when I say that Toby "fell in love" with Lara. I'm not talking about romance. I'm talking about how he loves Lara conceptually and as a character.
@@AxMania I haven't heard about that easter egg in TR2. But that easter egg exists in Tomb Raider Anniversary: Tomb of Qualopec level.
Loved this video sooo much!
Fun fact, I started replaying TR3 this afternoon… The music in the jungle level gives me goosebumps every time!
Didn’t know it’s a remake!
Thank you…
Thank YOU so much for your kind words! I really appreciate it. Oh really, that's awesome! Enjoy your playthrough. The jungle music is amazing, I love it so much!
I can say I grew up with tomb raider even tho angel of darkness is older than me I always played all the games all the time I loved the series. I knew that the jungle theme had a similar feel to it but I could never put my finger on why. This video gave me closure lmao
see my video clip(s) on TR engine: ruclips.net/video/RfmQgZUCTQU/видео.html
If interesting.
Just played ReMasteree version of TRIII and played Jungle level in what has nearly been 5 years
I always loved how Crash Bandicoot Warped had a level called “Tomb Wader”, as well as a character in Spyro 3 being dressed like Lara - Desert Ruins, a character named Tara. Pretty cool!
Plus, I loved hearing her name being mentioned in Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph
Great video showcasing the Easter Eggs
Yes, they are great Easter Eggs! Was a joy to play through those games again to capture this footage. Thank you so much!
I witnessed those easter eggs in those games and they were my favorite.
Loved this. Seeing Duke was so nostalgic, I remember watching my friend play his game when we were kids. And the Lara reference on the phone is something I definitely remember. Also those magazines from the 90s? I miss when gaming characters were almost like celebs. 😂❤️
Thank you so much! I agree. That was such a cool era. It was super nostalgic to make this video, and play through all those games again to capture the footage.
@@AxMania you did a really good job!
Ahh!!!
Game Pro Mags were def. Steeple of the 90s/00s.
I remember well the 99 mag featuring TRIV
Tomb Raider 1996 and beyond has had a huge influence. I remember when the first one came out they had it running on monitors in the background at the local video store and everyone was like, "WTH is that!" There were older family members who weren't gamers but would sit and watch me play that game as it was quite entertaining.
Same here. My parents, and even grandmother, sat and watched me play it occasionally. These games are so captivating.
Mum used to do the same, eventually ending up playing it herself, not to mention finishing it as well. (*_*)
Sir, as a Scot I cannot express how happy I am to hear you pronounce 'Loch' Ness correctly. So many people the world over get it wrong! You have my respect.
Haha, thank you! Well, I must admit that I pronounced it the typical "wrong way" in my level ranking video, but I plan to fix it when I reupload it with more levels 😅
how would you pronounce it then 🤔
I thought everyone said Loch Ness this way
Ach was, as a German I can totally relate to that. Das macht mir doch Angst!
@@bermgeit I'm used to many pronouncing it 'lock' instead.
@@Nortic111 🔐 Ness Xd
9:34 omigosh, she even repositions and runs back before doing a sprint jump it's so on point!!!!
Sony should make vinyl Astro figures of many game characters, I'll definitely but many of them.
Yes! :D Brilliant idea! I love all of those Astro references.
Love all these easter eggs, the first one with the music track I never recognized even tho i love the classic series from 1 - 5 alot and played it multiple times :D
Thank you 😃 I know, right? My mind was blown when I realized this a few months ago
In Angel of Darkness, there is a weird reference to the TR series itself! Hidden in the shelf of Rene's pawn shop is a box for a game called "Crypt Raider", which appears to be a reference to Tomb Raider for the Gameboy Color.
Yes! That's a good one as well. I might do a part 2 some day, so thank you for reminding me.
In the Williard's Lair level you can see the PC game box of Tomb Raider II beside the computers in his office and in Sleeping With the Fishes there is a poster of Lara above the lockers at the start of the level.
Wow I didn't know that thanks
Oh yeah, that's right! I might have to do a Tomb Raider Easter Eggs part II :D Thanks!
In the hugely underappreciated point and click detective game discworld noir there is a tomb raider by the name of Laredo Cronk with an English accent and her outfit on. It's very well done...
Oh my God, you are right! I played that game as a kid and loved it! I never finished it though. Aww, I feel bad about not having this easter egg in the video. It would have been awesome to have featured a hidden gem like Discworld Noir in my video.
@@AxMania Can you make an addendum video?
@@taskentlutsow2110 I think I'll make a Part II instead, because I've been told about so many other Easter Eggs now, that I easily have enough for another 😅
The Lara Croft cameo in Shadow Warrior was originally much more graphic in the game's leaked beta than the final game. They originally drew a completely different sprite that was later replaced when the game launched with a sprite that clearly used her ingame model from TR2/3.
Yes, I've seen the images. It was bordering on Hentai. So weird. I'm glad they changed it to her actual TR2/3 sprite instead.
Shareware version, not leaked beta... and it was only before V1.2, which was when it was changed. (=^_^=)
I actually figured out that connection with the TR Jungle song and St Francis Folly just 3 days ago while listening to the TR3 soundtrack, before I found you channel. I couldn't believe after over 20 years it took me that long to realize the connection!
Haha, that's awesome! And what a coincidence. I had the same reaction. My mind was blown!
I can't help but think that the dead Indiana Jones in TLR was a stab at the game Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, which released in 1999, just months before TLR, and was heralded as the Tomb Raider killer, but ultimately failed to really dent the TR franchise.
Haha, yeah, I thought this as well. I just love how all these games stab each other in the back 😂
A friend since gone. One of the best tracks in TR. Especially the Tomb raider suite version
Yes, I agree.
Nice finds!
One slightly more subtle easter egg I can think of is in C&C: Red Alert 2 - Yuri's Revenge. One of the Allied missions is called "Tomb Raided," it is set in an Egyptian desert, and a crucial part of it is done using the commando Tanya... a woman wielding two pistols (could it be any more obvious?). Garrisoning troops in one of the small pyramids around the mission map causes a mummy to spawn.
Yeah, I actually knew about this one, but I just couldn't get my hands on the game to record the footage :( I'll do another Easter Eggs video some day, and I hope I'll be able to include it in that one. Thank you!
Lovely, nostalgic video! Thank you for making it! My all time favourite Tomb Raider is The Last Revelation! Egypt has so many enigmatic secrets.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. I'll hopefully be releasing my The Last Revelation video next month.
In TR2, the cutscene at the end of Temple of Xian is the sounds and music of "Indiana Jones and the temple of doom" played backwards. It's the ritual scene when they first find the thuggie ceremony
I had NO idea, thank you! So Braveheart in the opening, and Temple of Doom later on :D Fascinating
I just love that the TR3 jungle theme is a throwback to TR1’s Greece/Egypt theme. I didn’t make the connection at all, but I always thought the jungle theme sounded eerily TR1 to me, and now just made the connection. Love both tracks! Great video man! :)
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! Haha yes, I was really surprised when I found out about this!
There is another one that I love. In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Geralt can find a skeleton and he says "A tomb raider, seems this one likes elven tombs".
Love the videos, keep it up!
Thank you so much! Yeah, I know about that one as well, but I've never played The Witcher 3 (I know...), so I'd probably have to make a lot of progress to reach that area? Anyways, I might do a part II to this video, and I'll see if I can include it in that one.
Once again, thank you!
Something Spooky is my all time favourite TR song and I had no idea about the theme! It seems so obvious now that you've pointed it out. I love it!
Yeah, I love it so much. It creates a perfect atmosphere of jungle adventure.
Great vid as always! Here's a really obscure one: the garage at the beginning of TR4's level "Street Bazaar" is a remake of the garage scene from the 1992 movie "Reservoir Dogs."
Thank you! Noted! That's an awesome one. I'll make another Easter Eggs video some day.
in classic TR games holding the Walk button before climbing up a ledge will make lara do a handstand up the ledge & flip herself over eventually. in sonic adventure 2 when sonic or shadow are hanging onto a ledge, if you avoid analog-sticking forward to climb up as usual & instead tap the jump button, they'll do an expedited handstand-over animation, closer to a front handspring
Ahhh, interesting! :D That's a nice little nod to Tomb Raider, possibly
I’m a big Sonic fan who’s first 3D platformer entry in the series was SA2 and I never knew this. Thanks!
Is it in the original Dreamcast version too?
on sa2 dreamcast yea it is, and earlier tr1 was a title on the sega saturn too, before sega's dreamcast
I can't believe it but I learned something new here after all those years. Rly hope you get the recognition you deserve young RUclips Prodigy
Thank you SO much, that's really kind of you to say.
Long time TR fan but I wasn’t aware of half of these. Love your content!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
Watching these is making me realize how nostalgic I am for the Tomb Raider games even though I hadn’t really played very many of them at the time - I had Tomb Raider 2 on the PC when I was 15 or so and was only able to get through it very slowly with a lot of trial and error! The secret tyrannosaurs in the first level were an amazing secret - it was something absolutely nobody believed when you told them about it, until they saw it for themselves :)
I am also astonished at hearing “loch” pronounced correctly :) I went through Tomb Raiders 1 and 3 a few years ago, but didn’t notice Nessie!
That's awesome, thank you for watching! I've actually often wondered if you like Tomb Raider, since I've always found those games to be sort of 3D counterparts to the original Prince of Persia game. Haha, thank you! The Scotland levels are in an expansion for Tomb Raider III, that's almost impossible to get your hands on nowadays, unfortunately :(
In Witcher 3 Blood and Wine expansion there's a little part where you follow a tomb raider who left a bunch of gear behind and your paths divide where the said raider used a line to get to an opened tomb across a chasm :)
That's a reference to the reboot Lara because you can see her climbing pick left in a column, none the less, still a fun easter egg!
I really need to play The Witcher 3, I've wanted to play that game for so long! Thank you for sharing that easter egg with me. I'm thinking of doing another Tomb Raider Easter Eggs video some day, so I'll try and see if I can play the game and capture the footage.
@@AxMania Game is well worth it so have fun! You ever thought about doing a classic TR games playthrough?
Can’t forget about the Natla Corporation elevator reference in The Matrix, although Toby Gard did humbly argue that they ‘homaged’ the whole scene in the TRA commentary.
Ohh, interesting! Noted for a future Part II video :D
Firstly I've got to say that I really enjoyed this video. Then I peek around to the comments and see how you as a content creator go out of your way to interact with your community. It's not just a simple 'hearted comment' here or there, just about every comment with recollection or more info have actual responses from yourself.
I've got major respects to you. You've got a new subscriber for sure. Do keep up the great work!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! I genuinely enjoy reading about people's history with Tomb Raider, their own opinions on how to rank the levels etc.
Thank you SO much!
I didn't even know most of these and I've played TR for years!
Also, in the Primal videogame for ps2, there's a point in the Wraith world where Jennifer gets the new power and smashes tombstones. One of these has a RIP LAURA CROFT inscription on it! It's only for a brief moment so it's difficult to catch
Somebody else to me about this one, I really need to play that game! I understand that it's a PlayStation 2 classic that I somehow never got to play. Thank you, it has been noted for a future part II video!
Oh my word … I NEVER noticed how similar-sounding those two melodies at the beginning were! And I've been a Tomb Raider vet for years! Man I feel dense.
Haha, I'm in the same boat. I didn't notice that until THIS year. And I've known those two tracks for almost 25 years now 😂
@@AxMania In all fairness, this isn't the first time something like this has happened.
When I first played the original TR, at Palace Midas I just randomly jumped on the hand, and then Lara turned into gold and died and I was like 😲. Then I remembered the Midas story and I was like, "Oooohhhh…"
Then in Atlantis, when I came across Bacon Lara for the very first time, my first instinct was just to keep shooting until I ran out of med-packs and died. 😏And it was only after I died that I realized she was mirroring all my moves and I was like, "…How is this so bizarre yet so cool at the same time?"
This was awesome 😍😍😍 I really enjoyed this video!! I didn’t know about most of these Easter Eggs 🥚 wonderful job as usual ☺️
Thank you so much Suzanne! :D I really appreciate it!
I love your videos, so good to see some classic and best of tomb raider. Maybe you should do a video of rumours/myths of the original TR games. One I remember was that at the very beginning of TR3 before you slide down the slope you can find a shotgun, looked everywhere so think that was just a rumour. There must be more you can showcase and either confirm or bust the myths, would be very interesting to watch. Consider me subscribed.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! That's a great idea! I actually think that shotgun at the beginning of Tomb Raider III is meant to be Lara's own shotgun that she dropped when she paraglided into the jungle - or whichever way she arrived.
I'll write down this idea of yours, and see what I can come up with for a future video ;)
My favourite Tomb Raider Easter egg is a very obscure one that may be pushing it a bit: in the 2011 anime Thundercats (where my name comes from), our protagonists are searching for “The Book of Omens” which is basically the Scion from TR1 and Core’s TRAE, down to being lost technology which curbs tremendous powers. After navigating trapped ruins in an African jungle (the show and its 80s counterpart take place on a post apocalyptic Earth full of mobian wildlife and certain humans regressed to tribal states), they find the Tower of Omens where the book is kept in a large valley behind a waterfall, revealed just the same as the temple in Ghana, using a grappling hook. (OK, Tygra’s whip but whatever)
I always imagine Zip piping up “Oh, _That’s_ where we put the temple” every time I watch this scene. The book is also kept clamped in a forcefield similar to the piece of Excalibur in Kazakhstan. The Sword of Omens itself is basically Excalibur from that game, down to the War Stone used to power it like the Ghalali Key, albeit the War Stone also gives the user Kurtis’s Farsee power.
That's awesome, I had no idea! I would actually really like to see that. I love the original 80's show.
@@AxMania the 2011 anime is much better, but it only lasted 1 season before getting cancelled and it ends on a cliffhanger.
My favourite Tomb Raider related channel is back with another amazing video!
:)
There was a PS2 exclusive in 2003 called Primal and in the third world the protagonist Jen gets a new power then goes to a grave with "Laura Craft RIP 2003" on it and destroys it."
It's sad in a way because that was the year of Angel of Darkness, where classic Lara left us.
Yeah, noted! I'll make another Easter Eggs video some day. And yeah :( I remember how Angel of Darkness was butchered by reviewers and stuff back in 2003. Was a hard time to be a Tomb Raider fan.
Hey so I made a comment a few hours ago about 2 easter eggs in the soundtrack. I said A Long Way Up (TR3) was a slower version of Proceed With Caution (TR2) and that a particular sound in the Aldwych ambience (TR3) was also in the Sinking Submarine ambience (TR5). Well, I was partly wrong. Mind The Gap Part II (TR3) is actually a slower version of Proceed With Caution (TR2). And the sound in the Aldwych ambience is actually not the same as the sound in Sinking Submarine. It sounds similar, but it's not the same.
You see, I was editing some videos almost 4 years ago. I recorded gameplay from new TR games but I replaced the soundtrack with the soundtrack from old TR games, because I loved it too much. When I was bored and couldn't think of what to use, I would just randomly increase the speed and pitch of the videos, which sometimes led to funny results. However, more importantly, this led me to discover these 2 "easter eggs". However, when I went back and verified if what I said was true, I realized that the sound from the Aldwych ambience is similar to the sound you hear in the Sinking Submarine ambience, but it's not the same, so sorry about that confusion. I feel a bit bad for not verifying before making the original comment, so you know what? I don't know what classifies as an easter egg, but I will write out some possibly interesting things I found when I was playing with the TR soundtracks (and this time, all of them are verified).
In Tomb Raider 4, if you go into the audio folder, which is in the game installation folder, you'll be able to find tracks called Action 2, Action 3, Action 4 and Action 5, however, Action 1 is missing. That audio track was removed from the game, but it was still made and you can find it on RUclips. It's kinda hard to find, but the exact video title is this: ""Action 1" ('Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation' soundtrack) by Peter Connelly [1999]".
In Tomb Raider 3, you may notice that the final boss fight music is missing. That's because it was cut from the game, but again, you can find it on RUclips. The video is called "Tomb Raider 3 Boss Fight Sequence with (Unused) Music". All of the music in TR 1, 2 and 3 was made by Nathan McCree, but this particular track was made by Peter Connelly and it was later remade and used in Tomb Raider 4. (Peter Connelly also did the whole soundtrack in TR 4 and 5.)
You can also get a mod for TR3 on the Core Design website that will add that unused track to the final boss fight.
Next up is just some small stuff.
- The Lost City of Tinnos ambience from TR3 is a lower-pitched version of the Temple of Xian ambience from TR2.
- The ambience in Temple Ruins, Caves of Kaliya, Temple of Puna, etc. (TR3) is very similar to the ambience of Caves (TR1), Opera House (TR2), etc. The "formula" for that ambience is the same, but a few sounds were changed.
- In the Tomb Raider 5 audio folder, you can find a track called A_Andy_Out_Spooky. This ambience was only used in cutscenes, but I heard it was the original ambience for the exterior Ireland levels, until it was replaced by A_Andy_Out_Norm.
- In the PC version of Tomb Raider 4, in Temple of Horus, the boss fight song (Boss 1) and the ambience (A2_In_Drips) are actually switched. The boss fight song plays at the beginning of the level when you're doing the waterskin puzzles, while the ambience plays during the actual boss fight.
- In many PC versions of Tomb Raider 3, if there are multiple ambience tracks that are supposed to play in a level, then if, let's say, you trigger the second ambience, then save the game and reload, the game will start playing the first ambience of the level. Kind of annoying, because in Temple Ruins, if you die, the sort-of scary ambience (called Anyone There) is replaced by the In The Jungle ambience, which sort of ruins the atmosphere of the level.
Wow, thank you so much! This has been an awesome read. I'm going to cross-check every track mentioned here later today. I had no idea so many Tomb Raider tracks were "related". I've saved your comment in a doc.
I know about the missing boss track from Tomb Raider III, it's so interesting they had Peter Connelly on board for just that one track. I don't like the missing track very much though (if it's the one I think it is) - it's the one that also plays during Chambers of Tulun, when you try to trap the Minotaur right? It feels like it loops too much, like there's only 8 seconds of melody or so.
Sincerely, thank you.
@@AxMania Yup, it's played in Chambers of Tulun and Temple of Horus.
@@AxMania Also, I just remembered a few more things from Tomb Raider 3.
- Refining Plant, which is an ambience from Thames Wharf (it plays as soon as you reach the 2 pools you have to keep draining and refilling), is a faster and higher-pitch version of the ambience from TR2 in Offshore Rig and Diving Area.
- Old Smokey, which is an ambience from Thames Wharf (as soon as the level starts), contains the same wind sounds you hear in the ambience of the Greece levels in TR1, The Great Wall and the Tibet levels in TR2 and also in Antarctica in TR3. But the Old Smokey ambience also has some traffic sound effects in it.
- In The Hut is a muffled version of the Antarctica ambience. I believe it's used only in cutscenes (I know it's used in the one where you meet Willard at the end of the Antarctica level).
- There's a track called "Piranha Waters" in Tomb Raider 3, but I don't remember it being played ever. It's only played in the first level of Tomb Raider 3: The Lost Artifact. It's still in the audio files of the original TR3 though.
Tara in Spyro 3 is a quintessential Easter Egg of Tomb Raider for me. Crash in particular is notable as both franchises were concurrent with each other with their PS1 outings from their respective 1996 debuts, with Spyro coinciding with the later Tomb Raider PS1 outings.
I agree completely. Seriously, Lara, Crash and Spyro were so important to me as a kid. I love all three series very much.
I love your channel. I love your content. Even your way of presenting the videos. A gem indeed.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate your kind comment!
There is a, uhh, extended version of that Lara call that runs before the credits of that Duke game lol
Haha, oh, really!? I didn't even know that.
There is a Tomb Raider easter egg in another Core Design game called Herdy Gerdy. I'm not sure if there is any footage of this online, but there's an area in the Ancient Temple level where you can find a younger, fat version of Lara who tells you she's going to become a famous explorer one day but she's a little bit lost and asks you where the exit is. I'm not exactly sure what triggers it, but she isn't there when you first play through and complete the level so I think it only happens if you revisit later on at some point. I could be wrong but I think they might have even got Jonell Elliott to do the voice for her in the little interaction you have, or at the very least they got an actress who did an impression of her (the actors weren't credited). You can also unlock extras in the game by collecting cowbells which you get after finding all 100 bells of each level and giving them to the cowman in the Meadow Village level, and one of them shows concept art for Angel of Darkness.
I had no idea about this game, it looks super fun! :D I really want to play that, is it rare to find a physical copy do you think? Thank you so much for letting me know about this, I've noted it down for a future part II to my Easter Eggs video.
@@AxMania Sorry, I've got no idea if the game is rare or not.
I'm huge fan of Tomb Raider games so I am very happy now i have found your channel today. Good work!
Also do you know voices of TR2 intro are from Braveheart movie main battle scene?
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! No, I had no idea :O But thank you, that has been noted for my future Part II video.
Good job mate. I cannot appriciate your hard work enough
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it.
I think you may have said "this one is my favourite easter egg" 3 times at the very least throughout the video xD.
Nonetheless, nice video and very well researched.
A lot of these easter eggs, I didn't know till now.
Haha, well... That's because the Doom easter egg is my favorite from the Tomb Raider games, and the Astro's Playroom easter egg is my favorite from other video games. And the Crash Bandicoot easter egg is my favorite pun-related easter egg 😛
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
Great video, it’s so funny, when you mentioned Astro’s Playroom I thought for sure you were going to mention the uhh, last boss which is a certain very familiar dinosaur.
Ohhh, haha! Yes, but ACTUALLY... that T-Rex is from the first ever PlayStation tech demo: ruclips.net/video/k7Lk7idveeU/видео.html
Unless of course, that the T-Rex in Lost Valley was an Easter Egg referencing this particular tech demo dinosaur :O!!!
@@AxMania oh man I totally thought that was a tomb Raider reference!
What a fun video! I think I knew most of them but maybe not with all the context, so that was nice! :D
I don't think I have a fave easter egg, but I remember a music video from a Czech band (I looked it up, it's from 2002) where lots of faces of various celebrities and occasional fictional characters appear and Lara was one of them. That was really cool when I saw it because that was the first TR easter egg I've ever come across :D
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! Ohh, interesting! Please do share :D
@@AxMania Here it is! (Some of the celebrities are Czech so don't worry if you have no idea who that is)
I think she's near the end though. ruclips.net/video/XHjnGR8iAi8/видео.html
I think larson has a pretty strong resemblance to Duke nukem as well 🤔
You are right! Duke and Larson are also about the same level intellectually :D
OK, you taught me good ones and i thought i knew this franchise well. Suscribed.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it
Brilliant video keep up the good work love Tomb Raider.
Thank you so much! So do I ;)
My favorit easter egg is the one which i have found out by myself in 1997: a big Medipack in the ear of Anubis in the Sanctuary of the Scion.
Ohhh :O Good one!

@@AxMania good. NOW MAKE MORE VIDEOS!
thanks for correcting that "Laura" crap
Haha, well I can't say I haven't made that mistake myself. I think I accidentally say Laura once in a while in my videos for some reason.
Lol Tara sums up Lara's raiding career.
Spent all day pushing buttons and boxes only for someone else to come along and steal her treasure
Hahaha, indeed. They nailed it!
I just found your channel, absolutely great work there ❤💅
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
Terry Pratchetts Discworld Noir point and click adventure game, a famous archaeologist named Laredo Cronk, was such a pleasant surprise at the time!
Yes, I feel so stupid! I played that game WAY BACK on PS1, but completely forgot about Laredo Cronk. Someone else reminded me a few days ago, but thank you! I'll include this in my Part II video.
@@AxMania another person played that game? I was beginning to feel like a pariah
@@Jay-qs2oi Hahaha! I know the feeling. Yes, I had it for PS1 :D I got pretty far in the game, but never completed it. It took me forever to get anywhere, because I didn't really understand English back then. But I enjoyed it nontheless.
@@AxMania was a fantastic game! Anyway I've subbed. Looking forward to more content!
@@Jay-qs2oi Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
Gosh FINALLY I KNOW WHO THAT WOMAN ON THAT PLANE IS!!
I always found it so weirdly placed!!!
Hahaha, yeah. I only found out very recently!
Seeing you recording TR1 with no texture filtering, but all other Tomb Raider games with texture filtering, gives me the feeling that I am right with my thinking. I would have in front of me a playthrough of all TR games. I played the classic ones since I was a child, but never finished them (except TR Revisited, a TR1 remake as a TR4 mod).
I was think how should I play. And I could never play TR1 with filtered textures. It looks so much nicer in the DOS and PS1 version without filtering. TR2 on the other hand was released on pc with filtering. You could still argue that since TR2 the PS1 was the lead platform and it had no filtering. But since TR4 it was obvious, that the PS1 version was later on not the best choice.
So somehow I would also tend to use filtering since TR2. You could also argue that at least the developers intended filtering for pc at least since TR2. You didn't had a choice if I recall correclty. Don't know if the setup file with the options would offer that.
Maybe nostalgia also plays a big role. But yesterday I finished Quake 1 for the very first time. And there I also deactivated the texture filtering. For me it looks nicer and sharper then.
Unfortunately I paused this video at 0:57. Maybe I will discover some of the easter eggs by my own first? :)
I agree completely! I deliberately chose to record my Tomb Raider footage without filtering, because it's the standard setting in the game, and it's how I've always remembered the game. I think bilinear filtering was introduced to the original game when the Unfinished Business expansion was released, and that it wasn't in the original version of the game? But I could be wrong.
Also, I think the game looks better this way. Tomb Raider II and onwards look better with filtering, but not the original game. I don't know why, but I've just always associated it with that particular PlayStation look ;)
In 1998 the German band "Die Ärzte" (all-male) released the song "Männer sind Schweine" (which translates to "Men are pigs"), which because of its self-deprecating nature went up in the charts and stayed there as the most most successful native language song for twelve weeks. It was even a cultural phenomenon and stayed part of the zeitgeist. Every German knows it still to this day and the song gets quoted and sung all the time. It even plays in the radio still from time to time.
How is this important to this video? Well you should watch the music video. The whole plot of the video is the band members trying (and failing) to fight Lara Croft. It was a hilarious mix of real scenes mixed with an early 3D computer animated Lara Croft. The music video came out between Tomb Raider 2s debut late 1997 and before winter of 1998 when Tomb Raider 2 came out. So when you turned on your TV in Germany during that time and switched to MTV or any other music channel, chances were pretty high that you would see the Ärzte fighting Lara Croft.
Here's the video: ruclips.net/video/404oPn6tudE/видео.html
Song lyrics are funny too. A translation is easy to find but RUclips keeps deleting my comment when there are external links it seems. (If my comment eventually pops up three times, ignore the others)
That was AMAZING :D Thank you for sharing! Awesome find. The song is great too, haha! I've never seen this, so thank you! I actually understand German pretty well, so I got a lot of it from just watching. It's so crazy how mainstream popular Tomb Raider was back then. Lara Croft was SO hot! I kind of wish I had experienced this popularity when it was at its hottest, but I was just 7-8 years old :P
There's a horror movie (pretty good one) called 'As Above So Below', it's a recovered footage style one. The protagonist is literally Lara (similar looking English archaeologist/explorer)
Oh, interesting! Thank you 😮
Tomb raider’s flute and piano music are killer.
Agreed.
Excellent video, man! A good few things I didn't know, myself. :)
Thank you so much Seth! I really appreciate it :)
In the original The Binding of Isaac game (and in the remake too) there is one enemy that behaves like the clone enemy that Natla creates in the first Tomb Raider game during the Atlantis levels.
It doesn't attack the player and only shoots if you press one of the attack buttons. It can be killed by leading it on a spike field xD
Haha, that's awesome! :D Thank you! It's been noted for a future video.
@@AxMania I forgot to mention that the enemy is called "Dople". That should make it easier for you to find some information about it :)
@@Meister26156 Haha nice, thank you! I'll try and see if I can play the game myself. I've heard so many good things about it.
Not-so-fun fact: the Shadow Warrior Beta leaked a few months before the initial release features an even sleazier version of the Lara cameo, which can be seen with a BUILD Engine editor for the ART files used to store textures and sprites of the games on the engine. IIRC, the map is absent in the leaked beta, so that's the only way one gets to know about that.
Yeah, I have seen pictures of that version before as well. Those Build Engine games were crazy.
Great vid brother, happy easter!!
Thank you so much. Happy Easter to you too!
frickin awesome idea for a video! and so very well made =D keep it up!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
There was meant to be a reference in Neversoft's Spider-Man. During the Rhino boss fight, Spidey says, "Let's see YOU do that, Ms. Croft," after Rhino goes down. However, it cuts to the next cutscene before he sies. The full audio is in the game's files. There's also an MK reference meant for the Scorpion boss fight.
Oh really, that's fun. A shame it didn't make it to the final game.
awesome. I have played those games many times.. thanks for sharing.
It was so much fun to make this video, going back and capturing footage for all these games 😃
One of my favorites is the club enemies in Tomb Raider II's Living Quarters and The Deck levels who are apparently fans of the Seattle Supersonics, based on their hats.
Hahaha, that's so funny. And random.
In Duke Nukem Total Meltdown, the PS1 port of Duke Nukem 3D, there's an extra episode called Plug and Pray where the levels are references to games on the PS1. The first level pays homage to the first level in Tomb Raider 1.
Haha, apparently the Duke Nukem games can't get enough of referencing Tomb Raider 😂
Another brilliant video. I'm am once again impressed.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
Discworld Noir has a fun Tomb Raider reference with Laredo Cronk.
Yes 😃 It annoys me that I forgot it for this video, because I love Discworld Noir.
One of my favourite Lara Croft Easter eggs is from Just Dance 4 the song Brand New Start features a coach with a brown braid, red shirt, trousers, hat and a whip dancing nearby a temple
This is obviously a reference to Lara and Indiana Jones
Haha, interesting! :D I need to check that out for a future Part 2 video.
your video was very well put and entertaining, thank you for making this! 😁😁😁
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
"Duke Nukem - Total meltdown" (PS1) has entire level, which is strongly resembles level from first TR game.
And Duke even says something like "Nice place. Perfect for a date with some nice lady with two big...pistols."
Yeah, someone else commented that, I'm so annoyed I missed this one :P Lara's outfit is also included in this level, right? I'll include it in a future Part II.
Another tomb raider easter egg i found was in the 2003 ps2 game called primal, at the aetha (3rd realm) part of the game, at a cemetery, you can spot a tomb stone that says, Laura Croft 2003,
And i find it ironic because primal came out before the whole angel of darkness catastrophe, so it was like the game predicted the fall of tomb raider
Yes other commenters told me about that too :O That's really crazy, haha! I will play the game some day, and include this Easter Egg in a future Part II video. Thank you!
@@AxMania No problem!! I also really liked your video! Keep up the good work!! And yes omg primal is such a nice game, it really caltures the early 2000s Gothic atmosphere
There’s a great Easter Egg in the PS2 game Primal where the main character smashes a gravestone with “Laura Croft 2003” carved onto it 😂
Haha, yeah I was told by another commenter, I didn't know! But it has been noted, as I want to make a second Easter Eggs video some day. Thanks! :D
Good posting. Nice.
Thank you.
Thank you!
My favorite easter egg of Tomb Raider is in Witcher 3 DLC Blood and Wine quest "Turn and Face the Strange".
This one I actually knew about, but I've never played The Witcher 3 (*gasp!*), but I want to do so before the next Easter Eggs video, because I think this Easter Egg is important to include.
I love stuff like this.
Thank you!
Larry Croft is absolutely crazy 😂👍
Hahaha, he is. He's so funny. Not exacly a flattering tribute, though.
Loved the early TRs
there's a ps2 exclusive title named Primal which has an easter egg with a tombstone saying "RIP Lara Croft, 2003", which seems to be a reference to AOD release
Nice, thank you! :D I'm taking notes for a future Easter Eggs video.
Great list! Thanks for uploading.
Thank you so much!
It was either shantae and the 7 sirens or indivisible that had a tomb raider reference i'm pretty sure one of those had one.
Ohh! I'll look into that for a future video. Thank you!
6:13 this might also be a reference to Mission Imposible 2
What's mission impossible
Yeah, that's true actually :D
@@AxMania what impossible
The Lara Croft audio in Duke Nukem Time to Kill was more of a joke about how Judith Gibbons voiced Lara's grunts in Tomb Raider 2/3 as if Lara was having an orgasm. The groan she makes after Duke goes "Lara is that you" is almost exactly like the sound Lara makes after she pulls herself up.
Hahaha, I can't unhear that now!
Tome Raider is my favourite one ;D wish to have a library or a bookshop with that name
That would be so cool! :D
You mentioned Julia Chang, but it's Michelle Chang who's more of an expy of Lara, down to turquoise shirt and often wearing shorts (Julia original wore skirts, and jeans as alternate).
Great point. I do think Julia wears a turquoise shirt underneath her... vest, or whatever it is, in her Player 1 outfit in Tekken 3 as well, however. They are both very Lara Croftesque.
i've really enjoyed this video
There's a good one in Serious Sam: TFE. He says something about remembering another explorer swimming around Venice or something.
Oh, that's cool! I didn't know about that one.
Wow, great video! I did not know any of these, apart from lovely Nessy of course :)
Thank you so much!
6:32 didnt mission impossible do that first?
I love this game
2:08 looks like Joanna Dark (from Perfect Dark Zero).
Actually, yes it does!
Did you know that the Next Gen magazine cover was inspired by janet jackson “janet” album cover from 1993? Kinda random but cool!
No, but I just googled it, and you are totally right, haha! Thank you for sharing!
@@AxMania no problem! I thought it was so wild! I remember being a kid and having that Janet CD and I played tomb raider. I got that magazine in the mail and was like this cover looks really familiar and I thought it was so cool! .. that was such a long time ago lol
Omg when u showed the Duke Nukem game a rush of memory came over me I remember playing this game with my brother as kids but completely forgot its existence what have you done! 😂 I cant believe it was this dirty though!!!! 😳😳
Hahaha, sorry! Yeah, those Duke Nukem games are filthy to the core 😅 As a kid, I had no idea though
TR3 wins by ambience. It gives you a feeling you can’t quite explain. The atmosphere is so iconic.
I agree completely! The atmosphere of Tomb Raider III is downright magical.
Ah good video, well researched👍🏻
