Someone is remaking Super Mario 64 on the Game Boy Advance and magic is real Here's the latest update video on this project: • Stars, doors, and a sk... Channel art by @PaintraSeaPea
4:18 it may seem like Joshua is the only one working on this, but there are actually three current developers. (including myself! I made the base of the Mario model you’re seeing in the most recent update videos!) the third developer is Larry Koopa 64 DS Hacker. We’ve all been putting all of our effort into this project and we appreciate the support!
The necessity for creativity due to limited hardware is something I really miss about gaming. You’d think that less technological restrictions would breed more creativity, but I think that more often than not the opposite is true
If you are not already familiar with them, you may be interested in PICO-8 and Playdate. The former is a fantasy console you can use on any computer platform including browser, designed to give hard limitations to encourage creativity with the design of games, apps, etc. The latter is an actual modern games platform influenced by old Game & Watch and Game Boy handhelds, also designed with limitations but enforced by hardware rather than software. Both of them have growing libraries of remarkable apps and games really worth checking out. They are both born of the desire to work within limitations that require creative solutions, and for that reason they have been attracting some developers.
The only console I've seen get even somewhat creative with limitations these days would probably be the Switch. Sometimes I'll pick up a port just to see "Okay, how will they pull it off/How will they completely fail"
I've always said restriction breeds creativity. When the creative side of your brain and the problem-solving side of your brain work in tandem, a lot can be accomplished
Actually the specs of the Wii (which were really low even at that time since it was just a slightly beefed up Gamecube) and New 3DS are not that much apart. New 3DS should even have a bit more grunt thanks to its 4 CPU cores and more RAM compared to Wii. The only things that restrain the New 3DS version of Xenoblade are the low display resolution and the fact that the New 3DS has to basically do double the work to compute the 2 sceneries/images for the stereoscopic 3D effect.

@@ItsFancyChef1Real true, Asterix gba wasn't that good of a game if you compare it to what people expect from the genre, but the fact that they got a full length 3d platformer running at all on the gba is quite the feat. Id say the same thing about super monkey ball jr a game that i would consider one of the worst monkey ball games at the time judging it compared to the console games but being on the gba gives it novelty value that it wouldn't have if it was say a psp game because its real monkey ball on a system that weak and not some weird isometric compramise.
It is incredibly impressive, but he's not far into it yet. It runs fine for now, but once he starts working on some of those levels full of enemies and obstacles he may run into some serious problems. He'll probably have to alter several levels in order to make them work on GBA, and that's considering he even gets that far before Nintendo comes at him with a cease and desist.
The fact this can actually run on GBA is still so insane to me. Like, we've had a few 3D driving games on GBA. We've had a few 3D FPS games on GBA. We've even had at least one official 3D platformer there (that Asterix game). But nothing was quite as impressive as this. Cool to see the passion. I imagine it'd take a lot of that to want to navigate the hardware and optimize as much as possible to achieve that kind of framerate, like portal N64.
This must take whole other levels of wizardry to understand how to nake this work. It's always impressive seeing people push old hardware to do beyond what was thought possible.
The number of people floored by this baffles me. It wasn't very long ago that we had headlines about the OpenLara Tomb Raider GBA port, and that looked EXACTLY like the ps1 version of the game running on a GBA. I guess that flew under most people's radar?
Some people really do just pay attention to Nintendo news I guess. So anything new in rendering or retro projects like this have to be from a Nintendo lens.

This reminds me of the guy who is making an N64 version of Portal. I think he said the term for it was a demake, since it's being made for older hardware, rather then newer hardware.
my one and only fear is that Big N will catch wind of this and lose their minds and shut it down like they do with anything else that makes that moves happy.
Like, remove his videos and ask him to stop showing the demake? They can't do anything else to him besides that, he has a right to make a demake from the ground up still, if it's genuinely for his own enjoyment. He just wouldn't be able to post about it on RUclips, but then that's still technically morally bankrupt to me, and I hope that doesn't become a battle of course.
I definitely get why he doesn't want to turn this into a job. That's how I feel about cooking and baking. I could see myself making any of my other interests into a career but not that. Being in a professional kitchen would make me miserable, not to mention the constant slight tremor in my hands that would make it impossible to keep up with the pace. Cooking will always be something just for me and whoever I choose to share the food I make with.
Have you seen the GBA version of OpenLara? It is a reimplementation of the original Tomb Raider engine, and I had a hard time convincing my brain it was real when I first saw it un on the GBA. They also released builds of it for the 3DO and Sega 32X since.
What we have here is the total opposite to dumping a badly optimized Unreal Engine game on a console! I want to see more of this bare metal programming approach because it's always super impressive. It reminds me of the old demo scene where they did almost impossible things on very limited hardware. As of today (besides Nintendo) the developers over at Shin'en Multimedia are one of the few in the business that still got that type of talent. And the exceptional bedroom coders of course!
The gradual improvements the dev has been making recently are out of this world. The original build was already impressive from the concept alone, but it actually looks genuinely enjoyable to play now.

For GBA standards this is Really impressive 😃 looks like the guy that made the Mario 64 Mods on that one channel on Hardware optimization/adoption has some competition now.
5:40 , My guess is that if it looked like that, and it was at least 50% of M64, it would have been one of the best if not the best selling GBA game ever.
Since we only have some video footage it is hard to tell. But the most optimistic extrapolation just based on the looks: We would have absolutely settled for that. Most GBA versions of games looked way worse.
I know about the subject, to clarify the Nintendo engineers at that time did know very well that you could run 3D on the GBA. They programmed everything in Assembly Language Low Level Code, in order to optimize their games so they would run stably with the CPU and the little memory ram it had. At that time it was more difficult to program than now. Most of them had to create custom engines from scratch so that the game would run well for the GBA architecture. Yes it is possible to run Mario 64 on the GBA but the lag, field of view and the pixels of the screen do not really let you appreciate the graphics well, plus I believe that the GBA does not have Z-Buffer and for that reason there are polygons that look mixed. Nintendo knew very well that Golden Sun for example those games look better in 2D pixels, but for the DS it already had better 3D performance and that is why more games were created.
Okay what is with the timing of this. I just watched Scott the Woz's video on Mario 64 for DS this morning! And now I see this? What the heck is reality man.
This is one of those things, where Nintendo should see this and the incredible talent behind it. Remember Nintendo took a chance on Shigeru Miyamoto back in the day. Look at what he has done. Imagine if they could find another person like him.
I'd think the DS version should be at least somewhat compatible with the GBA, but that has so many touch features and I think a later, faster ARM processor, so that starting from scratch is probably easier. I'd probably be inclined to redesign much of it to bring it better in line with the GBAs capabilies, since at the very least it doesn't have any analogue controls. Using scaled sprites for Mario and some enemies would probably look better, too
I'm not surprised it runs on the GBA. The GBA is basically a refined Super NES without Mode 7, though. But while it lacks the Mode 7 tech and has slightly worse audio capabilities, it does make up for some of that by having more RAM and a faster CPU than the SNES. The GBA Arm chip outputs 3D environments through software rendering. Some 3D development tech used in N64 games was first tested on the SNES. So, since the GBA has a CPU that lends itself to basic 3D, mimicking Mode 7 and the Super FX chip, I'm not surprised. Even if the GBA is limited to a maximum resolution of 240 x 160p. (3:2)
The triangles are distorting the exact same way they did on the PS1 due to rounding goofs. Which, honestly, the fact they could even get _that_ far on stock GBA hardware, is shocking.
In line with what you are saying about Nintendo knowing their hardware and making games look impressive, i first realised this with Super Mario Galaxy on the wii. That game when it released looked too good to be a wii game.
Obviously impressive and awesome, but I can't imagine it being able to fit all of Mario 64. Even it levels are cut and bonus areas and features are removed. Be that as it may, I cannot take ANYTHING away from this being done!
At this point I don't doubt that someday someone will try to port Super Mario 64 to the Super Nintendo (perhaps with Super FX 2) and finally make "Super Mario FX" real. I've been thinking about this since I saw the Star Fox EX hack-rom that even has some Nintendo 64 models and the Nintendo Giga-Leak that had 3D models of Yoshi and Link made for the SNES with Super FX.
I was the exact same. 3d on handheld was the greatest for me. Had the original Gameboy and the only pseudo 3d game I had was Formel 1 . I know that there was test drive but that I got only now with emulator. I absolutely love mobile gaming. Much more than stationary. Have 200.000+ mobile games on my phones and I will always play more mobile than pc. This project here is amazing. It's absolutely CRAZY what people are creating.. portal on N64 (sadly killed by Nintendo.. kinda) and SOOOO many demakes, remakes and ports ...old games being ported to android ..it's absolutely amazing to live now

Most GBA versions of games looked way worse.
To me, it looks better without the textures. But he's still working on it, he's going all the way.
NGL if they simplified the textures a bit more to make it less jumbled it would be a huge improvement both visually and maybe even performance wise
I love Super Red Triangle 64!
Jokes aside, it’s cool this person is doing something like this. It would be incredible if they manage to finish it.
i bet nintendo is furious at people having fun again. i wonder how long this one will last
Okay what is with the timing of this.
2:30 I think you mean Iridion 3D! Iridion 2 was even better. Great little shmup 👌
In line with what you are saying about Nintendo knowing their hardware and making games look impressive, i first realised this with Super Mario Galaxy on the wii. That game when it released looked too good to be a wii game.
When is nintendo gonna sue the hell out of this guy
I saw GBA 3D once. The Spider-Man 2 adaptation's hub. It wasn't done well, but I could appreciate the attempt.
for anyone saying anything about the texture warping he is working on a solution just wait for that part to look good
I really hope the project gets perspective-correct texture mapping.
Working on it!
You should take a look at Tomb Raider 1 running on the GBA. It's even more impressive. Blew my mind when I first saw it.
There actually is a full 3D Gameboy Advance game called Asterix and Obelix XXL
I never see Pikmin Bloom ads... except on Arlo videos. How do they do it
I was the exact same.
