    It’s actually my favourite out of the new LM trio. It doesn’t get as much attention as the other two, but I think this has more to do with it being released later.
    The sharpness always amazes me. It’s such a versatile focal length and the minimum focus distance just adds to that versatility.
    It’s the lens I always have in my bag.

    • @oxeneers
      @oxeneers  Год назад

      So well said, GHAS! It DEFINITELY doesn't get as much attention, love, or is really ever even talked about. Yes, I agree the February 2022 release (and subsequent delay on shipping, etc) made it fly under the radar. But I've had it for almost a year and have taken so many great images with it, that have made me really happy. It's definitely more challenging to get a "banger" shot with great composition than say on the 33mm, but it's worth the challenge.
      And yes, the sharpness is unreal. On the new X-H bodies that I own, I am really floored. It's not up to the level of my GFX - but you're right, for that sharpness, MFD, and versatility, it just crushes. So cool. Do you post your work anywhere online? I'd love to check it out!

      Thank you! Man, that feels so good to hear that this helped. Yeah, the 18mm is amazing but for me, it is too close to a "smartphone lens". @@oxeneers 18 or 27mm is more a storytelling focal length, it’s more a niche to see in that focal length and to put yourself in the sweet spot for that length. Being tight in the shot is not always better but then depends your chosen genre of photography. My advise would be stuck to one focal length for a month, nothing else so you begin to see in that length, sounds odd but it is works

    Absolutely love the optical performance of the new LM lenses and the silent and rapid AF is unreal, however, for me I like to keep the setup as compact and light as possible, particularly for street and EDC so it's the older 1.4 legacy lenses for now - apart from maybe the 56 1.2 LM where i'm far enough out of the way that the lens length and weight isn't as much of an issue. Great review man.

I will bring my 50mm f2 if I want to be compact + creative, and yes, you're right - the old 1.4's are definitely smaller, particularly on an X-Pro body or X-E. Thanks so much for the kind words man! Thanks again for not being super overenthusiastic while speaking. Your splices seem pretty smooth and natural - even at 1.25x speed.

I want to make a video on the 18mm and how I use it, but I need to use it more - not super proud of the stuff I've shot with it thus far. It's the same "focal length" as an iPhone's wide camera (or close to it), so it always feels like "higher quality smartphone photography", you know? Oh man. First lens I bought when I bought my first X camera was the 23mm 1.4. I love this lens, and am also kind of considering the v2. But also… I may go 18mm 1.4 as it would prob be better for video.
    Great points. I feel like people are either in camp 50mm or 35mm. And strongly support their choice while hating on the other. Personally I feel 35mm isn't wide enough, and I feel like 50mm is here nor there - not wide enough, not close enough.
    But If I had to choose, 23mm over 35mm. The 23mm is my family event lens, indoor low light lens, basic lens when I want to travel light. Great video, now I want the v2. Jerk. Stop trying to get me to spend money, haven't I spent enough?!?!

      HAHAH, yeah man, the original 23mm was so amazing. I loved mine. I saved up for it and was so excited when I got it. I really took some great, meaningful images on that lens. But I never heard people really talk about it. The 35mm/50mm (Fuji) lenses got all the love. So I always silently enjoyed it.
      And yes, the 23mm vs. 35mm (Fujifilm) opinion was is real haha. I, like I said, love the 33mm because it's such a fantastic lens (and a "true" 50mm equivalent) with great technical features (LM, WR, extra aspherical elements, etc) but the 23mm is the same thing as the 33mm but just... 23mm. Haha. I too choose it for that reason - the 'family event' thing is something that you say "Well I don't go to those very often", but you do... I find myself indoors all the time, whether it's family or friends or some work thing, or whatever. The 23mm is absolutely necessary there! You're right.

    Thanks for again an awesome review! Can I lend your advice?
    I want to add a Fujilux lens to my prime lens setup, for both professional photo and video work and family/everyday photography. I got the 16mm f1,4, the 35mm f2 and the 90mm f2. My 16mm f1,4 definitely gets the most use in everyday photography, because of its wide aperture, its great character and the pretty versatile focal length. But sometimes, I don't like the wideness of the lens for shooting environments, landscapes etc. It just gives too much 'blank space' for my liking. I want a lens that feels a bit more focused, a bit more 'cozy', and that gives more background separation. Also, I would like some more compression for portraits. The 35mm f2 is nice for family stuff, but I don't feel inspired by the colors and overall JPEG rendition. It's always a bit lacking when I watch the pictures back. And for weddings and low-light, the aperture is too small.
    Would you advice me to go for the 23mm f1,4 or the 33m f1,4? I could see myself getting both in the end, but I can only afford one to begin with. I have used a Canon 24mm f2,8 with a lot of pleasure in the past, so I know the focal length pretty well too. My main uses for the lenses:
    23mm f1,4 - talking head interview shots, grabbing a coffee at a café table with a friend, event video's where I only use one lens, two persons talking together, documenting general life, environmental portraits, establishment shots of buildings with a little more compression.
    33mm f1,4 - my main lens for portrait sessions, close-ups of coffee, flowers, products, talking head shots where I focus on the face, a barista steaming milk, general photography of people, landscape/environment shots with a little more compression.
    I feel like the 23mm f1,4 would be a great walk around lens, as you stated in the video, but the 33mm f1,4 would add the most practical value to my professional work (there is a big gap of professional portrait quality between 16mm and 90mm). My only 'fear' is that the lens is less dynamic than the 23mm and is not great for establishment shots. With a good composition, the 23mm feels more 'special' to me, but it might not prove to be enough difference over the 16mm. I would love to hear your thoughts/insights. Thanks in advance!

    • @oxeneers
      @oxeneers  Год назад +2

      Wow, thanks so much for taking the time to type this. And thanks for the kind words!
      I think you can't go wrong with the 23mm or 33mm but it comes down to you and what you said. Do you enjoy the 16mm that much that it's become your daily carry? Then you would actually probably be most happy with the 23mm if we're being honest. You can use the 35mm f2 which is FANTASTIC as a stand-in for the 33mm when you get more money for that. I would stick with the 35mm f2 for now and get the 23mm and use it for all the things you talked about.
      The 33mm is still my favorite, but everyone's situation is different. I sold my 35mm f2 and 23mm f2 to get the new 1.4 versions and yes, they're much larger, but I am okay with the extra weight/size as long as I get better, more creative-looking results.
      Go with the 23mm. You'll be so happy.

      @BTMovieSecondChannel Год назад +1

      @@oxeneers Thanks for your emphatic and elaborate response! Also nice that you really give a strong direction instead of leaving everything open :).
      Yesterday, I actually decided to do a test. I walked around the town with my 18-55mm zoom lens and took pictures at 23mm, then at 33mm. They were just general pictures of buildings, flowers, streets.
      My takeaway from this test is just how much more natural I feel when composing 23mm for street photography. It just feels ‘effortless’ in capturing the scene as I see it, in its totality. In comparison, 33mm feels really strained. I can not show much context, but am forced to focus on details or very straight compositions. The end results are still good, but they don’t reflect what I saw and needed me to reposition and rethink a lot (just as with my 16mm). I did not expect to feel such a difference, but I did.
      Purely looking at the end results of the street shoot though, I think the 33mm pictures show more of a ‘timeless’ character and look more purposeful. Maybe because I am more accustomed to the focal length now, maybe because there is just more compression. The 23mm focuses more on the lines and the dynamics then the subject, which can be a good or a bad thing.
      And I still like 33mm a little better for close-ups (taking pictures of my filter coffee brewer in action)- that’s where it shines - but for ease-of-use and general purpose, the 23mm wins it for me. It’s a difficult decision!

      Honestly, I use Lightroom and always have. The AI tools for masking are too good not to have. With that being said, I have done a lot of work to get rid of "artifacts" or "worms". I edit my photos in a particular way so I can avoid that for the most part. I did a whole video of how I edit my Fujifilm stuff - did you see that?

    I've got the 18, 33 and 56...do I really need this? Until you posted this video, I didn't.

      HAHA. Honestly, for me, I knew I was going to heavily invest in the new stacked sensor body and the 40MP body so I figured, let me replace my 23mm, 35mm 1.4's and get the 18mm 1.4 since I was always eyeing the f2 and the original 16mm f1.4. I'm happy to have all of them, but with that being said, I have to be honest and know that my 18mm doesn't get used as often because as I said in another comment, it is too close to the smartphone focal length IMO. The 23mm is just much better in that respect, really shows a viewer that it is in fact a "real" camera (if we can call it that) haha.
      The 18/23/33/56 "quatro" is something special. I am so privileged to have it and use them.

      @@oxeneers I dunno about the 18, I think it's absolutely incredible when I'm shooting things like events and I can get up super close and it's amazing for environmental portraits. I know it's similar to a smartphone but it's optically perfect for me. Shame about the aperture ring being a bit loose.
      But as an every day lens, the 18 isn't quite close enough, and the 33 is sometimes a little too close.
      So I bought the 23mm on Saturday, oops, your fault. Loving it so far!

    In the car you are further from subjects, walking on the pavement, you are closer... I feel is why 35mm compositionally does not work in cars

    Hey Dylan - awesome video - i just stumbled upon this - anyway was wondering - i know its yuour presets in the videos but it would be nice to know which ones you used specifically - i love the colors on "Whopper Water" picture. Future videos just put a little subtitle on the bottom where its your own preset: (list X preset) - anyway gave you a sub and a like!
