  • How To Pass The Closed Guard Using The Sao Paulo Pass by Leonardo Nogueira
    -
    Today I am here with Leonardo Nogueira. Leonardo is a great friend of mine and he was the guy who opened the doors for me to go and train at Alliance in Sao Paulo in 2009. Him and I were in the same weight division and we actually closed out the worlds in 2012. Today he is going to show us a position he does on everyone. It is the “Sao Paulo” pass. Leo is amazing at this so lets see below.

    Leonardo Nogueira is an all-time legend. He doesn't get the "press" that others get but that is a shame,people who know the sport know that he is/was a killer! I have heard legendary tournament stories undocumented in which he smashed everyone including today's top names. Nothing was more intense than Alliance gym wars from 2005 to 2012. These golden years were ridiculous. But,ridiculous with pride, honor and respect. When you earned a belt in those days from Alliance you treasured it more than a naked model in your bed. Well,maybe on weekdays :) Ossss

    • @chrisbaldwin3148
      @chrisbaldwin3148 Год назад +4

      @@Deuger the only part of this pass that wasn't "no-gi" was when he established a grip on the fabric on Bernardo's right armpit. This is easily replaced, however, with palm pressure and keeping that elbow tight to his ribs to avoid the omoplata until you attain passing pressure

    I am very lucky to train with Leo Nogueira as he is a good friend of mine and our head instructor here at alliance in Atlanta. Train with him 4x a week. An absolute monster to even fathom to roll with and his teaching, to say the least is..... Perfection!

    I agree with those who say that’s the best video of the São Paulo/Tozi pass. So many videos showing the pass but forgetting details and let the passer exposed to attacks of the guard player.

    one of my instructors who is probaby 20lb smaller than me did this 5 times in a row i had no answer. just purchased the instructional on bjjfanatics and the first 30min seems very high quality :) excited to try this later since I absolutely hate standing up on someone who is much bigger than me or who has a good open guard/sweep game. my go-to guard opener is usually the tripod and placing knee on their tailbone but this seems like it requires even less energy and love the fact that it connects straight into half guard. nothing more fun than half guard passing :D

    Thank you so much professor Faria and professor Nogueira. I have knee issues that does not allow me to bend my knees or stand up effectively to break the close guard. I have been using the Roger Gracie pressure pass to open guards but against taller and limber opponents it is tough to keep the pressure pass the knee line.

    Uma dúvida: No meio da passagem o Bernardo colocou os 2 ganchos na virilha , não e 4 pontos da pegada costas???

    • @danielcavalcanti8417
      @danielcavalcanti8417 5 лет назад +2

      Além dos ganchos, as costas precisam estar dominadas. É por isso que ele mantêm o braço esquerdo por baixo (underhook), pra evitar a tomada de costas.

    does the way the opponent cross their legs determine the side you pass to?

    • @Fabyfakid
      @Fabyfakid 4 года назад +1

      What changes is how you bring in the far leg. For example, Leo is passing to Bernardo's left side; depending on how Bernardo's crossing his legs, Leo either brings his right leg in a downward motion or an upward motion in order to pry open the ankles.

  • @slavicvolk
    @slavicvolk Год назад

    What if the bottom guy has their ankles swapped, pushing it down won’t help open, does it matter?

    just sayin, there are too many version of this pass that skip being in half guard so i dont see how this way would ever be practical...our coach teaches instead of a grip or working the underhook you pop up and tripod get his hips off the floor and PASS the hand underneath his ass to your other hand, TRAPPED, windshield wiper into side control. ...

      @ajberry3358 4 месяца назад +1

      Going this route you can reach mount or side control depending on what reaction you get from opponent. Check out his other videos.
