11:20 I realize I'm about two decades older than the target audience for this book, so I might have been too harsh when talking about the writing style.

It's hard to put yourself in the mindset of a teenager once you've really outgrown those years. I understand where you're coming from and thought the review was great.

Sounds like the movie improved upon almost everything in the book.

The movie definitely wins I read the book when I was younger and I was surprised how different the book was, like you said for Mia to visit her dad and grandma every summer and not they are royal made no sense, it made more sense how the fil operates. I do wish doe they kept the NYC setting as a fellow New Yorker but I heard it was bc the director wanted to be closer to his family since they lived there

I have lived in SF so because of that I liked the location change 😆 But yeah, the movie changes with her family made so much more sense!

I kind of love the movie and book for different reasons. I watched and read the book. I kind of liked the grandma in the movie more. But I really enjoyed the friendships more in the books.

Again, a movie wins! Laura, have you thought about keeping a running total of movie vs. book wins (including ties)? It might be kinda cool (but also a lot of work) . . .

I counted it up once, but that was before I had even done 100 episodes (I'm currently approaching 200!) So I sold go through and tally them up!

The movie is so much better than the book. I read most of them when I was younger and I didn't like it that much. Mia wasn't great and I didn't like how it was written.

I started this book series when I was thirteen years old and I’ve always enjoyed the fact that it feels like your reading from the perspective of a teen girl, I like the first movie for what it was but I must say I enjoyed the book series more

    • @WhytheBookWins
      @WhytheBookWins  2 месяца назад

Yeah I wonder what I would have thought of the book had I read it when I was younger! I think I would have enjoyed it. But unfortunately as an adult it just wasn't as appealing.

I do love the movie for NYC cause I do love NYC and love a reference to a place I know very well.
I do also like the the chaos that is Lilly. She is a some much worse person in the books and it’s a plot point in the books later for her snobbishness and superiority complex as a child of psychologists. Maybe I am biased because I love how it is read by Ann Hathaway on audible. And I do love the development of Michael and Mia’s relationship in the book. And I wish that Hakim Baja was in the movies. I loved her secret love of romcom books and movies and her gentle spirit vs Lilly’s intensity. It was nice to see Mia hang out with someone without worrying if she was going to get psychoanalyzed and judged. And the friendship between their bodyguards is so cute!
I think that Mia is younger in the books than in the movies. She is 14 and I love some of her teetering on being a child and being thrown into responsibilities.
I do LOVE the movie because it does make more sense and is more heartfelt.
But I love the book for for how relatable she is and how I look back and see wow I was stupid like that too when I was 14.
It’s like nostalgic in a second hand embarrassment way.
I did read all up to the wedding one.

Thanks for sharing! Yeah the bodyguards were pretty funny in the book, but I do also love the romance they give him in the movie with Clarice. And yeah, her friendship Tina was really cute too in the book.

I loved the first movie so much, the second one was sort of disappointing, and so I never ended up reading the book series. I also TBH like the change to have it take place in San Francisco, it makes it more unique.

Think I only read the first book as a preteen, but the movies were a Disney Channel staple for me. Although trying to “ugly” up Anne Hathaway was impossible 😅 she and Dame Julie were so adorable together & had great chemistry

@@WhytheBookWins Charlize Theron? Yes cause she really de-glamorized her lovely features to play Aileen Wuornos in “Monster” thanks to the excellent makeup and Charlize’s commitment to gaining some weight for the part.

The books and movie are a different story imo, we have very different characters, settings, and everything is changed lol

I think I like both book and movie for different reason. It’s funny that book Mia in a later book receives this movie and the sequel as the movies on her life by taking liberties with the facts. I think they joked a reason Tina couldn’t be in there was because her Dad didn’t give the rights or were afraid of the body guard.
I like the book cause of Tina, and Mia has a fun use of pop culture references and even though the Grandma is mean I find her hilarious.
The movie the SF location I like that Lily even though she still not my favorite character she at least apologizes where as in the book series she gets worse. That I wanted Mia to just be friends with Tina. Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews both give a good job to.
I like both the book series and movie equally but I give the movie a percentage more. I never thought of it as weird that Mia never put 2 and 2 together in the books
