South Africa is last in the world for equality. Like some of her comrades she has been in the tranches since her university days. I suspect she will rise to whatever she is appointed to. Politics remains a man’s sport. Hellen Zille is an outlier. Big names like Winnie Mandela, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Lindiwe Sisulu or even Biko’s side piece Mamphela Ramphele could not get it done. Women who highly thought of as operators like Naledi Pandor have no political traction of their own. Naledi Chirwa also has the handicap that in her party, only the leader is allowed to shine. The moment you try to grow your own constituency and exercise agency you get clipped or frozen out very fast. Dali Mpofu, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, Godrich Gardee know about this.
