Practical Primer on Primer

We start out with a decent primer unless we are sure that we need a full stain blocking primer. The higher level of stain blocker means more toxicity and we like to avoid that. We don't normally use paint and primer in one. How many coats of primer do you need? One, but we try to use the least toxic primer we can. You could use the best drywall primer on new drywall, but if it has some staining because it has been waiting to be primed for a long time and got wet, etc., then use the drywall primer and hit the bad spots that bleed through.
