  • In the midst of the build of this Stihl 026, I wanted to show some piston piston modifications and do the calculations of the DIFFERENCE of INERTIA FORCE and how it can/will effect the RPM capabilities of a powersaw.
Plus, I show some of the tips and tricks I use when porting a chainsaw to keep cylinder port size and shape as desired while still changing the port timing to my target numbers.
I intend to build this chainsaw to be a sporty firewood saw focusing (a little) more on torque than high RPMs It should eventually make a nice saw for sawing fire wood with a good power-to-weight ratio.
In the next steps, we will be preparing to port the intake and port/polish the exhaust as well as adjust the squish and transfers.
Subscribe to continue to see Chainsaw porting and modifications, how me make Firewood, run the Sawmill, Bale Hay, tend to our Sheep, Hogs, Cattle, Peacocks, Chickens, Guineas, and Doggos. You will also see me making gadgets, tools, and other stuff to make farmlife easier on this homestead.
I don't waste much of anything... especially money. If there is a way to do something cheaper or easier, I'm searching for it.

Loving the numbers! Excellent video to show people the effects of all these subtle little changes.

@FarmlessFarmer-xs1he Good deal; glad you liked it some. I thought of you when I was making the video as I know you like the numbers as well. 🤓

I've seen others show the weight reduction on the piston but haven't seen anyone do the math to show what it actually changes.
    Well done.

@Kevin.L_ Thanks Kevin; I had never seen it either; Hope it was interesting. I usually always check like that, just because I like numbers; but I don't really let it impact my builds; as in, I'd better only go xxx because of yyy. But I like to quantify it for my lil ol pea brain.

@@HayChaffandSawdust1 Interesting indeed. I'll eventually tear into one of my saws and give these ideas a try. The more I learn before hand the better.
      Thanks for sharing!

@Kevin.L_ Exactly where I was at a few short years ago.

Really enjoyed this one, I had not thought to calculate the inertia force. I have definitely gone to the extreme with a piston, well, maybe not, it has not broken yet. Took a cheep 42.5mm kit for an 025 and cut windows into the piston, took it down from 48g to 43g, knife edged the crank to go along with it, got pretty aggressive inside the case also. This is one of my limbing saws, If it implodes, I have the opportunity to do it all again and keep learning.
As always, thank you for sharing.

@Archer_82 Do you think the windows helped with transfer? I bet, losing that much weight, made that thing responsive as heck!! I love the 021 thru 025 and 210 thru 250... for a few bucks, you can ruin a few just having fun and testing stuff. May dang well be my favorite saw to play with and do light-to-medium cutting.

I am not sure if it helped, my thought was that it could not hurt flow. To me it does seem very responsive, it will rise and fall in mid throttle about as quickly as I can move the trigger. I have made a few “shorts” with that one without a bar, and limbing. Also one of my favorite saws.

@Archer_82 Watched the vid(s); didn't comment anything that may be taken wrong on your vid, but does it sound like it may be stifled on the exhaust side? Sounds like you have plenty of work to get the fuel/air in the saw. I put an Ironhorse muffler on my 021 and 250; really woke them up. Kinda obnoxious sounding though

I have wanted to put together an iron horse style, the trees don’t mind the noise. I will start looking for tubing of appropriate diameters and put something up when it’s together. Thanks for the advice.

@Archer_82 I can get you the measurements from mine when the time comes if it would help you in any way. When the time comes, I may see if it fits this saw too.
