If you have kids you should be amicable to your ex like this guy. What you do for her or him is actually for your kids. You are teaching them to be kind and helpful. They emulate what they see. This is exactly what I needed to see- now to undertake this project in bits and pieces
I agree ! Thanks for noticing. Most simply complain about the shaky camera, but you, benevolent one that you are, sees past all that and only acknowledges the greatness. lol. Okay we won't talk Dodgers for now.
I want to thank you very much for this video! I just finished building onto my block wall! So much more privacy. Specially when me and the family are in the pool. Great Job! Again, Thank you!!!
Thanks for the instruction. I only changed one thing from this and that was that I used redhead sleeve anchors instead of wedge anchors. I was have issues with the wedge anchors popping out and read that sleeve anchors might be a better choice for cinder block. Otherwise the total project only took about 12 hours and looks amazing.
I could swear that when you said,"All the dog ears have been cut," I immediately heard a "Ruff! Ruff!" in the background. That, my friend, is great film direction!
You did a great job this is exactly what I was looking for. I have plans to build my fence and thinking about doing half Concrete and the other half wood. It's better to keep the peace. I admire that
Sir, you made this look so simple but doable for any average weekend warrior guy like myself. I don’t have tools for this but I’m going to Home Depot anyways to see if I can purchase panels like these and put them up myself.
When he said he was building it for his ex and free.. first thing I thought was ‘wait there’s more guys out there like my ex?’ Lol I know I’m blessed to be able to count on him and his family for literally anything I might need.. we might not be together but he’s still my best friend.
Thanks. We have an amazing child together, and even though it didn't work out, I have to express gratitude, for my daughter is my reason for living. Thanks for watching.
I'm glad I could inspire you. Be sure to watch my other horizontal privacy fence video because since shooting this, I've abandoned the use of RED HEADS. They're too unreliable. I use lag shields instead and the results are much better. Good luck with it and thanks for watching.
That's not a bad idea. I would include some kind of horizontal material. drill a hole through a piece of metal and put that tween two nuts. Anything to make it harder for the threaded rod to spin. Also, when you will the concrete, hit the side of the block gently with a hammer to release any air pockets.
It's been a lonnnnnng time since I made this and I refined the system quite a bit. Use coated screws instead of nails. The nails pull out over time. Instead of attaching the frame to the wall with Red Heads, use ext grade lag screws and lag shields. Much easier and stronger. Good luck and thanks for watching.
You're welcome. What's funny is that I hadn't intended to make this video, I just decided at the last second since I had my camera with me. After posting this, my phone blew up with requests to build this type of fence. I had no idea how popular this type of fence was. Glad I could help. Thanks for watching.
Terrific video and great work. Like another comment glad i went through the comments to here you are doing the horizontal look now. I got 123 lineal feet of wall to cover. In Long Beach
Impressive and beautiful! Where is this awesome young man? I want a fence topper! I want a foot higher then the maximum allowable. The neighbors built a house right up against my block wall I called the city three times and even had my brother call. They just brushed it off.
It was so long ago, I don't recall. However, after doing several of these, I switched to lag shields and lag screws. Far better for this application. Red heads are good in solid concrete but terrible in a block wall. I use a 5/16" x 1 3/4" lag shield. Drill with a 1/2" masonry bit, install a 5/16" ext grade lag shield. I did dozens of these fences and that was the best combo. Thanks for watching.
Great video and exactly what I was looking for! Did you go back and screw each plank in after the nails? Also wondering if there was a reason why you chose not to cut the dog ears in multiple planks? Do the cuts get sloppy when you do that? Thanks again!!!
You're welcome. I've built so many of these since posting this video. I can't even count them all. I've refined the system many times. Good luck and thanks for watching.
thanks for the video I have to do something similar...the old one i tore down(termites!) did not use redhead but some odd wood base frame and braces...I am surprised you put panels/boards on both sides..i suppose for looks..but looks pretty good. My needs to be a bit bigger..maybe 4 feet...I am wondering if the red heads will be enough on windy days..
Great video!wanted to know if it is possible to build this type of fence using the lag bolts and sleeves you have suggested if the masonry wall isn't filled with concrete?
Wow, this was great. We just moved to Palm Springs. Can I use wood like this for desert environment where the summers typically get to be 115 degrees? I wonder if the wood can handle that type of heat or if I should try to use another type of material.
When you cut the dog ears for the planks doesn't that expose the wood now to the elements? Will not this cause it to rot faster (considering you are in an area that rains a lot) than if you didn't cut it off? I know aesthetically it looks WAY better, but let's say this is for a guy who cares more about longevity than aesthetics.
This was 10 years and 100 fences ago. I stopped making them with vertical boards. Instead I use 4 or 5 rows of horizontal tongue and groove boards, but the framing was the same. Thanks for watching.
Thank you pal and great job 👍 motivated me to get myself moving to do the same, i need it badly, my neighbors are filthy, loud confrontational Salvadorian pricks. I don't wanna keep seeing them. Love the ending speech 🙂
Great video. Thanks. What size red head bolts did you use? 1/2" x 5 1/2"? Did you use the galvanized steel so they would resist rust better? Would using the regular zinc ones be a bad idea to use outside?

Awesome vid! What size are the red heads used 5 1/2”? Also does the redhead have to go all the way through the concrete topper on the block wall so when you tighten it catches? My block wall has a 2” thick red concrete topper on a hollow block wall. Just wanted to double check. Thank you
This is awesome and exactly what I was looking for! Glad I read through some of the comments too though. I am curious, will this work (lag shield and lag screws) work on a 3" brick? When dealing with bricks, I remove them and pour concrete and a "J" bolt, then cut the brick up and mortar it back in for cosmetics. Give it a shot though. Thanks for watching.

I like your Idea.... i will be adding 2-3feet to a 4feet brickwall
Great video! I notice that you butt the planks right up to each other as well as right on top of the concrete. Is there no need to worry about the wood expanding and contracting?
Great question. This is very light cedar and brand new. Expansion is not an issue. They actually shrink quite a bit and that's one of the reasons I rarely build this type of fence. After a few months there will be gaps of 1/8" - 1/4" between each plank. Nowadays I do horizontal tongue and groove fences almost exclusively. They look better and don't reveal gaps when they shrink. I really enjoyed your video, its exactly what I was looking for. One question...do you think that putting something like styrofoam between the slats would help reduce any noise from the other side of the wall, say from dogs, appreciably? Thanks.
No. Most of the sound that you hear in such a situation is going over the fence to begin with, so there would be no difference. Thanks for watching.
Looks great, but did you consider PVC instead of wood for longevity and less maintenance?
Nice job. Overlap boards would have looked nice tho. Still great work,.
