    If you have kids you should be amicable to your ex like this guy. What you do for her or him is actually for your kids. You are teaching them to be kind and helpful. They emulate what they see.
    This is exactly what I needed to see- now to undertake this project in bits and pieces

    Thanks for the instruction. I only changed one thing from this and that was that I used redhead sleeve anchors instead of wedge anchors. I was have issues with the wedge anchors popping out and read that sleeve anchors might be a better choice for cinder block. Otherwise the total project only took about 12 hours and looks amazing.

      That's not a bad idea. I would include some kind of horizontal material. drill a hole through a piece of metal and put that tween two nuts. Anything to make it harder for the threaded rod to spin. Also, when you will the concrete, hit the side of the block gently with a hammer to release any air pockets.

      It was so long ago, I don't recall. However, after doing several of these, I switched to lag shields and lag screws. Far better for this application. Red heads are good in solid concrete but terrible in a block wall. I use a 5/16" x 1 3/4" lag shield. Drill with a 1/2" masonry bit, install a 5/16" ext grade lag shield. I did dozens of these fences and that was the best combo. Thanks for watching.

    When you cut the dog ears for the planks doesn't that expose the wood now to the elements? Will not this cause it to rot faster (considering you are in an area that rains a lot) than if you didn't cut it off? I know aesthetically it looks WAY better, but let's say this is for a guy who cares more about longevity than aesthetics.

Obviously I wouldn't be putting that wood on top and have it hanging over, but I'm looking into extending the height of my fence for privacy reasons, without having to add more bricks on top or build an interior wall right up against the brick.

    • @askillthatpays
      @askillthatpays  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the nice words. I no longer use Redheads and only use lag screws and shields. Bricks are very tricky though because they can shatter very easily. Maybe try a few tests and see how it goes. When dealing with bricks, I remove them and pour concrete and a "J" bolt, then cut the brick up and mortar it back in for cosmetics. Give it a shot though. Thanks for watching.

      You're welcome. 2 notes since this was so long ago. I stopped using nails and went to coated screws for the boards. Also stopped using Redheads as they fail too often. Instead I use a lag screw and lag shield. Thanks for watching.

    Great video! I notice that you butt the planks right up to each other as well as right on top of the concrete. Is there no need to worry about the wood expanding and contracting?

      Great question. This is very light cedar and brand new. Expansion is not an issue. They actually shrink quite a bit and that's one of the reasons I rarely build this type of fence. After a few months there will be gaps of 1/8" - 1/4" between each plank. Nowadays I do horizontal tongue and groove fences almost exclusively. They look better and don't reveal gaps when they shrink. Thanks for watching.

    I really enjoyed your video, its exactly what I was looking for. One question...do you think that putting something like styrofoam between the slats would help reduce any noise from the other side of the wall, say from dogs, appreciably? Thanks.

      No. Most of the sound that you hear in such a situation is going over the fence to begin with, so there would be no difference. Thanks for watching.

    Looks great, but did you consider PVC instead of wood for longevity and less maintenance?

    Nice job. Overlap boards would have looked nice tho. Still great work,.

    Great video. Thanks so much! Question. I’m looking to do a wood fence on top of same kind of brick wall, but would be about 4-5’ height of fence and planned horizontal slats rather than vertical. Seems like this same method should work, but wasn’t sure if my planned height would jeopardize the strength and stability of the fence? Was originally planning to bore in and secure galvanized posts with concrete but the redhead option seems a lot easier than that. Thanks!

      Awesome instructional video. It made me want to subscribe. Do you think I could go a little higher (3ft?). And are there any alternatives to the red head bolts? I don’t my cinder block wall has enough filled in concrete…. Thanks in advance for your advice!

    I love your work! I was wondering... Would this work the same on a rock wall? Or would I need different anchors?

    • @askillthatpays
      @askillthatpays  9 лет назад +3

      *****
      It will depend on the composition of the rock. Since posting this video, I've actually had better luck using "sleeve anchors," instead of expansion anchor used in the video. I would recommend doing some test drilling and anchors on the rock to find out what works best before you commit to anything. Good luck with it and thanks for watching.
