Concord should be STUDIED on HOW NOT TO DESIGN A GAME. The character design is SO BAD and this goes way beyond idpol - the characters have no energy whatsoever and the realistic faces combined with the goofy outfits makes them look like they're a bunch of costume-wearing cosplayers rather than mercenaries. The amount of brainrot required for these designs to survive the 8 year development of the game, because no one at Firewalk Studio or Sony with any authority had the marketing sense, knowledge of color theory, or EYEBALLS to realize they needed better characters. This is like releasing a new Pokemon game and all the pokemon are just recolors of Rattata and expecting people to be interested. MULTIPLE people in the company have to be deluded to think this was okay. This is such a fundamental ignorance of game design.

I don’t think the chars are the problem I think the gameplay is just not innovating enough.
Then the entry is to high and no one wants to play it because the audience already plays another live service Game.
the game is just not innovating enough. I think the game would be the shit on the market when it came out 8 years ago and before Overwatch.
I mean look at overwatch it’s kinda dead to and only survives because it’s an old game

    • @billbillson6779
      @billbillson6779 2 месяца назад +4

@@Rescel1 It's both, but it's mainly the characters. I say it's mainly the characters because the open beta had abysmally low numbers so nobody was interested to even indulge in a freebie weekend. And while team shooters have a crowded market, Marvel Rivals had a beta and the same freaking time as Concord and there were tens of thousands of concurrent players for that game! Then there's Valve's Deadlock which is a MOBA and not a hero shooter but it's very similar and it's an invite-only play test and it's had hundreds of thousands of concurrent players!
And yeah, Overwatch currenly sticks around because nothing better has shown up in 8 years. But people would jump ship if something did. Concord's gameplay was even worse than Overwatch's, zero positive word of mouth from the few people who did play it, but most people stayed away because one look at that character roster and saw boring garbage.

I work in a videogame studio, not gonna say which one, but it was going to be a pretty big live service game that the company worked on for a pretty long time. A few weeks ago, the investors cancelled the project, with the biggest reason being, if not the ONLY reason being Concord and how badly it failed. They were scared that making a live service game was going to be too much of a risk. Funny thing is, our game was nothing like concord either.
I don't know whether our game was going to be super successful or not, but pretty sure it would have had more than 400 concurrent players on steam, or maybe I'm just biased. Point is, it's crazy how insane failures like this can have such a massive ripple effect and kill other games in their infancy and possibly take away jobs as well.

Game devs use AI to comb comments sections for use feedback, but comments sections often have AI created content (bots) to fool the algorithm and drive views, or by some third party actor to push a narrative and divide people, but the AI game devs use can't see these things for what htey are like the rest of us. TLDR, Game devs are making games for bots. AI is not self aware, but it is self replicating. AI is making content for AI, which can't consume the content directly, but only in comments generated by AI that can't experience the game but only comment on it. These are the customers.

It goes both ways really, if the industry look at Call of Duty, Fortnite, Pokemon, Overwatch, etc.. mediocre games at best and they are the absolute leaders of their respective segments, that sends the twisted message that fans of those specific genres are willing to eat shit, simple as that, they don't care about quality. But here it comes Atlus developing a vastly superior Pokemon for decades (the Shin Megami Tensei series) and they never really draw the massive Pokemon audience, so this argument that quality and excellence can "steal" away consumers... in this market? Well, that is wishful thinking.
Every entertainment industry follow trends since forever, hell, Mozart followed trends lol this is not a "sin" by itself, it is what it is, human nature. The current trends are so ugly, the MCU "humor", the fake "inclusivity" and "apathy" to gain "likes" on social media, etc.. that makes it seem like trend chasing is something repugnant, but it's something natural. Remember when every game in the 00s (even Zelda) was "edgy" and "dark"? Well, the emo trend affected the pop industry in the west, in my pov the emos were harmless, but most likely that was the case because there was no social media at that time... the repugnance does not come from the trend itself, social media is to blame. The internet is the best human invention ever since electricity, but social media was a really ugly byproduct

  • @yllare

With regards to sending a message through a great game, what comes to mind is NieR Automata. Not only were the characters extremely attractive, the story made you think. It made you introspective about the human condition as you watched machine lifeforms try to emulate the long extinct humans sometimes in comical ways, but most times in the most diabolical ways possible. And at the end of the road, greatest message of all came from the simplified shooter game that hijacked the credits roll.
As NieR's creator said, the minigame was designed to be unbeatable alone. You NEED the assistance of other players who sacrificed their save files in order to provide assistance to other gamers who have reached that end. Yoko Taro's message was, that humans even the most introverted ones, need one another to keep going and surviving into the future. Idk why westerners can't even think like Yoko Taro did. Like they have the most advanced technology in the gaming industry, more people that work for the company, but still fumbled so hard with most of the japanese games (I didn't say all but there's plenty examples of it). Maybe because it lacks of emotion and dedication that the developer has or they're making game just for the profit without thinking bout the market nor quality. It's such a shame tbh.

@@hamizanhamm This has no academic bearing whatsoever just my personal observations, but I like to think that it has to do with what I refer to as the "craftman's mentality." The Japanese attitude for the most part is to dedicated themselves to a task practically body and soul whatever it may be, creative or destructive bordering on obsession. Maybe it's influence of Buddhism and Shintoism combined? I'm not sure, but based on observations, this is the trait that officeworkers, artisans, creatives, service people, etc. have in common. Yoko Taro is, for better or worse, on the extreme side of this spectrum haha. But from obsession comes a unique perspective and introspection that gives birth to works like the NieR series. I won't presume to lecture the west on how they live their lives, but seeing as how they're floundering chasing the big bucks, perhaps it's time for a perspective change.

$40 is a lot to ask for a game that doesn't have much to offer. There are people saying that "gamers just don't want to try something new." The problem is there's literally nothing new about this game. Most Gamers love to try new good games. Games like this that just recycled mechanics and designs from other games that were popular 8 years ago have nothing new and interesting to offer. To make matters worse, their original ideas and designs that they did add are pretty bad. If the only good things in the game are copied from other games, people will just play those other games instead and save their $40.

The Market: What reason do people have to play your game other your competitors?
Firewalk: I don't understand the question.
I think another big problem companies have in engaging with the Live Service market is that they fail to internalize the simple fact that people don't have infinite time and infinite money to invest in an infinite amount of live service products. They see a successful product, attempt to identify trends, invest stupid amounts of money to ape those trends, only to come to market 4 years later to appeal to consumers of the product they saw 4 years ago.
Concord is the perfect example of this, since their feature list and implementation is suitable for a game that might have wanted to compete with Overwatch at launch, while failing to account for the rest of the market. They've been in development long enough to see the rise and fall of Lawbreakers, the rise and fall of Battleborn, the rise and fall of Anthem, the rise of Fortnite, of Valorant, of Overwatch 2... Need I go on?
It might've been sad if they released in July 2017 and failed due to Fortnite's launch. It might've been sad if they fell off at the same time as Paladins, losing out to Overwatch due to Activision Blizzard's larger resources. Instead, they released in 2024, with absolutely desire to consider the market they're releasing in.
This product failed because the people in charge wore blinders for 7 years and did absolutely nothing in that time. Of course, it also didn't help that they chose an aesthetic that appeals to a smaller demographic, but this game wouldn't have succeeded if they chose something people actually wanted to see; just look at how long Gundam Overwatch lasted for.

Slowly but surely, large companies are realizing catering to a TINY minority of players is a REALLY BAD business decision. It will eventually stop, I promise. They can't keep losing $$ like this. Law suits from investors will become a regular thing, and these FOOLS will realize they can't keep doing this. I think it'll take a MASSIVE publisher going totally bankrupt, then you'll see sweeping changes.

Lets be brutally honest here, I know this guy clearly has a right leaning 'capital G' gamers audience but....this was fucking doomed from the start, even the "DEI" (which, lets be honest, is just a rebranding of the word 'Woke' now that its lost all meaning and cause people to start taking the piss out of people who use it) barely scratches the surface of the problems this game has.
It is a game released 5 years too late with a $40 price tag. Overwatch is free to play, Valorant is free to play and both have been out long enough that they've pretty much soaked up all the playerbase for 5v5 hero shooters that you're going to get. So it's a game that's trying to chase a trend that has already passed (like imagine someone releasing a Battle Royale *now*, hell even when Fortnite wasn't as popular we still had fails like Rumbleverse and Radical High because they existed to chase a trend), does exactly zero things new with the formula and has character and level design that could be called 'bland' at best.

*Literally every sane gamer* who watched the trailer saw this coming.
How did Sony and Firewalk not?
The most logical answer I can think of is that they fundamentally don't understand how gamers think or how to market to us, but it doesn't make any sense that Sony wouldn't know how to market a game considering they've done it perfectly several times before. Their trailer looked like it was designed for a superhero movie or animated series, not for a game. I don't remember them showing a single second of gameplay in that trailer, and I didn't even realise that it was supposed to be for a game the first few times I saw it, and even after that (until this video) I assumed it was some sort of story-driven RPG, not a hero shooter. To me, it was just "that annoying advert that's way too long, with those GotG knock-offs at a bar".
When marketing a game, surely showing off the gameplay should be the number one priority? Isn't this just common sense? Apparently not...
It's like they tried to do what Valve did with Team Fortress 2's "meet the team" videos, while forgetting that Team Fortress 2 was based on a game that thousands of people already understood and enjoyed playing, that Valve also heavily promoted TF2's gameplay and mechanics before and alongside the first meet the team videos before transistioning to primarily narrative/character-based marketing a few years later, and that TF2 (at least at the time of its release) filled a unique niche rather than being released into an already-saturated market.

It just sounded smart, but it's actually quite flawed. The new people coming out of college are trying to implement what was said, and its flaws are becoming apparent.
What was said was, "You don't need to be innovative all the time. Just take something that is already selling well, copy it, and do better."

as someone who studied business administration for some good years, this is one of the few time that i see a company in gaming fucking up and actually say "yeah, its understandable how they fell for that error" because from the general business vision, its an ideal process "find client, study client, make product", social media isnt a bad place to study a possible client in general, BUT 8 years is a fuckton of time in the games industry, every month a new "best game appears and fades", not only this, but the gaming playerbase in genral, that goes from the guy that buy COD every year but dont go deeper than this, to the person that plays 10+ hours a day, so to be able to find where you are going to aim is harder, and trying to make something for everyone will be refused by everyone, because is too much of a difference from the surface to the core, not only this but the market is oversaturated, specifically in the "game as a service" market you can count this by at least 10x, and i can count way more reasons why its hard as fuck to make a successful game now, but everything comes back to one point, the businesspeople responsible for the gaming part of sony are people that are competent as administrators, but they arent people that have a deep undestandment of the gaming market.

Each group has their own culture, beliefs, and values unique to that particular group. What you're essentially doing with DEI is playing jazz in a metal concert. where 2 particular groups lgbt+ and straight men have nothing related to them. Majority of gamers are straight men. Think a big part of the problem is the disconnection between top management and consumers. There is a gap in understanding between these two layers often cut off due to corporate hierarchy, which isn't helped by some younger developers coming into the workforce with an agenda they picked up from institutions/social media/social circles. Management for larger businesses would typically be business and operations oriented, so they look for trends in data as drivers for decision making, which then are passed onto the devs who are sometimes forced to make stuff they don't necessarily like and you end up with a piss poor product. And this is also the reason why many small indie dev teams are more capable of producing good games as their owners are typically also involved in the development process and have a deeper connection and understanding of their target audience. But then if you put these developer/owners into the position of large company management, they probably wouldn't have the necessary skill set.

If the creator can’t be excited about it then why should the player? I know it’s a business and at the end of the day profit has to be considered, but you can’t manufacture passion. At some point these publishers have to stop trying to chase trends and just let their developers work on what they want. You shouldn’t try and follow and trend instead your goal should be to make a new one. Honestly the goal of every video game development company and publisher should simply be this: make a game that we believe in that we believe people will enjoy playing because it’s fun. And that fun doesn’t have to appeal to a general audience. If you’re making a survival horror game then make what you believe fans of that genre would enjoy. Sorry I’m rambling. Anyways yeah end nerd rant.

I'm a 57 year old man and I don't need to see other males in their 50s in games to feel inclusive. Inclusive does nothing but make the preacher feel better by preaching.

The people making these games hate you regardless of what you do or don't need to see. Theyre classifying you because of your sex and skin color.

@josephmother2659 I don't know what a laugh here means. I'm guessing you don't offer much to conversations in real life, either.

The sad part is that Sony dropped TLOU multiplayer and Days Gone 2 which both would have been far better than this mess. It makes me question their decision making and management changes, especially since Sony is known for its quality exclusives.
