I've read it 7 times. Beware though, the book can be a difficult read. Characters are born and die on the same page since the events of the Silmarillion take place over 40,000 years. Even the first 2 or 3 chapters are difficult as you try to work out who Eru (God) is as well as the Valar (Great Angels) and Maiar (Lesser Angels) and how the world was built through music. I found it the first time round to read the first 6 chapters and then re-start the book as the beginning then made sense as to who the Angels and first elves were. But it is one hell of a book - literally the Bible.
Maybe start with the recently completed stories, like The Children of Hurin or The Fall of Gondolin. Personally love The Silmarillion, but like the previous poster wrote, it isn't always the easiest of reads.

The story of Turin would be great but the Fall of Gondolin if done right like the original trilogy would be so epic to see on the screen, perfect story for 2-3 movies as well
