You know my feelings about this show - it is my first true Broadway love, and you never forget your first. I hold this show in the Majestic Theater so close to my heart and that heart has slowly been breaking ever since word of the closing broke. That mask in the NYC sky is just as much a part of the city for me as the most iconic sky scraper or icon. It was the go to for me for that perfect NYC evening - drinks, Phantom and then a great late supper. I know it’s probably going to reopen soon with the Mackintosh butchered down production-but it’ll never be the same. I can’t imagine the emotion in that theater as the Phantom cries out that final line of the show. And I know it may seem I’m going overboard on this - but it’s seriously like mourning the loss of a truly great old friend. I just can’t believe the curtain is going to come down on this one for good… More than ever - I am truly grateful to you for posting this. Soon - and for the first time ever - it’ll be all we have left of the brilliant original. Thank you Spiderwoman…
I’m as old as this production, and the music has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. It also turned me into a huge Sarah Brightman fan. I’m devastated that it won’t be running anymore. Thank you, thank you SO much for sharing all of this footage in such great quality.
Well, Brightman obviously had to preserve her voice because those ending notes in the title song are not just crazy, they're SUPER CRAZY. If she kept trying to hit that dreaded high E in rehearsals, she would have no voice left. Even the most trained singers can still screw up their voices in some way.
OMG! I have seen this rehearsal footage before, but the quality was just horrible. Thank you, Aurora, for sharing this! I still cannot believe Phantom is closing after 35 years! What a run! What also blows my mind is originally, the Broadway production almost never happened because back then, AEA was EXTREMELY STRICT with bringing foreign actors over to Broadway, and they originally did not want Sarah Brightman to play Christine. I am glad AEA let her perform, though! Can you imagine if Phantom never came to Broadway? It's gonna be hard to be in NYC and not see the Phantom Marquee on 44th Street! Hopefully, it comes back in like 10 years or so. Congrats to the entire cast and crew of Phantom on an amazing record-breaking run! You will be missed!
How wonderful to see the rehearsal footage. In the 2021 clip I think all the clapping and cheering would drive me mad - how would you hear the music in those quiet, poignant moments?
I'm actually shocked A) this show is closing but mostly how little buzz there is about the closing. Like I thought this closing would have been made a massive deal with interviews and tonnes of content... Nothing really. The insta account for phantom is very meh.

It is so interesting being able to watch Hal Prince direct.
I saw this in New York in January 1988 in previews. I was ten years old and completely awed by it.

Aurora, dearest, you are a national treasure. Thank you so much for sharing this!
What a pleasure to see Hal at work. The rehearsals are more gold than the show itself.
This is fascinating. It’s weird to see them rehearsing in regular clothes, and doing the crazy part at the end of the title song down the octave.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Precious. Never had the fortune to watch Crawford live, but this rehearsal is as good as the real thing. Thank you!
The rehearsal footage of the first lair, wow! Thank you Spiderwoman. This show is very close to my heart, grateful as always for your footage!
Thank you so much for this.
I was at the March 15 performance with my father, and we both gave it a 10/10.
AS!!!!! Thank you for posting such awesome stuff!!!!❤❤❤
I don’t know how you keep coming up with these gems but I’m very, very glad that you do. Just. Glorious.

Wow. What a treat it is to see all the footage of Judy Kaye !!
Michael Crawford is and will always be the sexiest man alive❤❤
I saw this. The original and best pergormance!
Please come back as a national tour, I've had no luck trying to get tickets during mid march. I didn't suspect this show would close.
My god. Watching Hal Prince direct 😮💨🤩
love the rehearsals. wouldn’t like to be at a show the audience acts like that.
Thanks
Judy Kaye .
How wonderful to see the rehearsal footage. In the 2021 clip I think all the clapping and cheering would drive me mad - how would you hear the music in those quiet, poignant moments?
The clapping was from the reopening from covid it happened to all shows so of course people have the biggest energy to see something big again!

the entire OBC was recorded. It is the New York Public Library but can only be seen with permisson
How old were Sarah, Michael and Steve?
Michael was 46, Steve was 33 and Sarah was 27.
25:06 “Becky” is that Rebecca Luker???
without a doubt. no other Rebecca or Becky listed in the original NY company 💗
Yes. Rebecca Luker was the mirror bride and understudy for Christine. This was her first professional Broadway show.
