  • In this episode, Andrew explains how good the 2020 hunting season was going to be and the reality of what it's like to see woods affected by an epizootic hemorrhagic disease outbreak.
    This video series follows three archery hunters who get a first hand experience dealing with a devastating EHD outbreak in the Hudson Valley of New York. Andrew Elder - the local resident, his brother Nelson Elder and family friend Johnny Diamonds give the first week of bow season a try to get a complete grasp on how bad the herd loss really is. If an EHD outbreak wasn't enough, bad luck followed them around for every hunt. These are the cursed hunts of 2020.

    I just found your video while researching EHD in the Hudson Valley because once again we are being hit with EHD. I thought last year was bad but I have to say this year is even worse! Hard to believe that I know. The smell of dead deer is EVERYWHERE and there is no frost in the near future to kill the midge causing this. It looks like this season is already over and nothing to do now except look for dead heads. I can't see us bouncing back from 2 years back to back for a few years! To think we still have deer season to go through!!!!

      Yeah - This is crazy! I didn't think it'd come back again this year. I haven't noticed any dead deer though, just heard of it happening. I'm hoping there are enough deer making it through with antibodies. Seems like the areas on the outside rims of last year's affected areas are the ones getting hit hard. Which unit are you in? I'm in 3N... This year I'm mostly focusing on out-of-state hunts... Best of luck to you this year. Keep your head up. Deer can bounce back fairly quickly 🤞

    Cool video in a bummer sort of way.. eventually the population will rebound.I live in the Colombia river gorge in Washington and had a similar experience with my "personal" deer population crashing hard two -three years ago.. I finally got to the bottom of it but my problem was a family of lions , not EHD. Deer population is slowly coming back now.

    • @HigherElevations
      @HigherElevations  3 года назад +1

      Yeah - could take 4-5 years. We lost about 80% or more in the areas I hunt. Good thing I have other options.

      @@HigherElevations are there many lions in the Adirondacks?
      The Colombia river gorge (especially on the Washington side) has become overrun with them.You know it’s a problem when you go out scouting or hunting and see more cats than deer. We’ve been trying to take care of it but it’s hard to do without official helps Dogs at night in winter is the best but dogs are still illegal unless the officials use them going after a "problem" cat or bear.

      @@guaporeturns9472 There might be less than a handful, if there are any at all. They're starting to make a comeback here in the northeast after being off the landscape for a few decades.

      @@HigherElevations yeah they are cool in extremely small doses but you only need a few in an area to mess it up. They are death on deer and even elk herds. Thanks for the response.

      @@HigherElevations I think the sitting water is the culprit. I have a large stream that runs s through my property..

      That's great - yeah, definitely warm stagnant water is breeding grounds for midges

    Ehd is also getting worse because deer are being forced to live in more concentrated herds due to mans delineation of habitat

    • @HigherElevations
      @HigherElevations  3 года назад +2

      True. The outbreak here was bad because of high concentrations of deer for several reasons: Limited water sources to due to extreme drought, no acorns in woods and high population numbers.

    Tough break guys. I took for granted how good the deer hunting is in that area, until I moved to the desert. Used to be that you didn't have to scout because deer were everywhere.
