+Leonel Sosa The filter manufacturers always advise to flush the new filter and run the water until it shows no signs of contamination. However this is more for cosmetic rather than safety reasons as you can get 'Charcoal tablets' at some health stores for cleansing impurities and poisons.
Fails to mention that the dispenser may splutter water out all over the place whilst the new filter completely fills! Best to put a towel down on the floor under the dispenser, or an absorbent cloth in the dispenser alcove, when dispensing the first few litres of water:-)

is it true that you have to let run thru 4 to 5 gallons of water after you replace the filter?
