-todays little project is a fun little easy to carve mushroom.Starting with a block of Basswood (Linden)that is 1 1/4" square by 3" tall. The tool i used is an 1 3/4" Helvie carving knife and also a couple small Dockyard Tools which i kept calling Dock works for some reason lol. After carving i used regular craft store acrylic paints watered down and finished with a coat of Linseed oil but any oil you choose will be fine -thx for watching and if you are new to the hobby of woodcarving here is a link to my "Getting started in Woodcarving" playlist

Doug, thank you. I recently decided to go full time with carving; both power and knife carving. I live in a small mountain town in California, and am in the perfdct market to sell spirits, whittles, and staffs/hiking sticks. You and Jordy Johnson inspired my start into wood carving. Ive watched hours of your videos. Your way of explaining things, your attention to detail, both in your work and in your way of teaching and explaining, and your good attitude are marks not only of a master carver, but an excellent educator. Give yourself more credit - Your work, your videos, your encouragement have changed my life.
Thank you.
So nice, man! Same here in Colorado. I have a few new wood art ideas as well! AND can’t wait to go gold sniping in your area man!
Excellent video, thank you kindly.....just a tip for the black, you can cut off the wooden tip of a paint brush to flat and it will make the same size black spot in each eye just like the dot tool you use for the white sparkle spot only the flat with make a circle, you can buy the dot tool with flat end also, just quick easy eyeballs the same size
I’m sooooo happy that you’re “back” , you were greatly missed 🥰
Absolutely Love your Videos! I am a very new "Newbie" and you're videos are the best! You are Calm, Clear, and explain what you are doing step by step. I also love the fact as I'm sure many of your followers do( of which i am now one ) That you do not play annoying music! Your little characters are a true delight to see. :) :) :)
Thx -don’t watch my newest video lol
I started doing your carving tutorials with scrap 2x4s and a swiss army knife. I was addicted. Never thought I could! Now I am waiting for some knives, and moved onto green eilloe branches, as the 2x4 scraps were dried and super hard to cut through. Yoh made me for a little while, forget my osteoarthritis pain, and helped me pass the bear season time up here keeping busy in a super fun satisfying way! Thank you for that! And huge thanks for adding measurements into your teaching, totally have a ruler on my table! Made my first wood spirit set in full bark willow today, while watching your pole spirit being chiseled!
I absolutely love your videos! I'm in the process of purchasing beginners materials and am chomping at the bit to actually begin carving my first simple project. You're very inspiring to this 75-year-old and widowed elderly man with a ton of free time. Thanks for sparking some excitement back into these old bones and sharing a gift that I should have started years ago.
I just started too. I love it. So relaxing to me.
Doug I could watch you all day it motivate me a lot helps me relax and depression I would paint the cap red with white spots as I seen lots of fly agaric mushrooms 🍄 on my branch hunting foraging in woods 👍🦊🐾🇮🇹🇬🇧
Wow Doug.
I didn’t recognise you for a moment, that’s a good look Buddy.
I appreciate what you do Sir. 100% entertainment.
Thank you.

I love mushrooms ,, you do such amazing carvings
Hi Doug, another great little project - I love it, actually.
If it's any help to anyone, I was taught as a trainee carpenter (bar fitter) many years ago that tea bags are great for darkening. It's got me out of many a tight corner over the decades. So, if using linseed or any other oil that is 'clear' (there's nothing wrong with sunflower, vegetable or even olive oil), soak a few tea bags in hot water while making a cuppa for yourself, squench them out into a saucer, then dip them back into the dark brew and dab them where required; wait for it to dry then oil over them. I've used the technique many times to age (or antique) small sections when repairing old doors and trim with inserts of new wood. Repeat as many times as required - it works!
It's all about using whatever you have at hand, I guess.
What a happy little guy! This tutorial made me smile. Thank you for taking the time to brighten someone’s day. Keep safe.
Glad you've re-opened the Workshop. Nice to see the Executive Chair filled again. Mushrooms signal Fall around the corner, a welcome thought in the Arizona heat.
Very cool Doug thanks for the tutorial 👍🍄

Thank you, Doug! You’ve made real for me something I’ve wondered about for years! Drawing is fun too, but man, when your grandkids can poke him the nose when you’re done or hang their stockings off him,👍👍👍
My Lord Doug you make some cute things we know you have fun while you do it I love it
Now carving number five - such a lovely quick project that de-stresses me after work. Two similar to yours; two tiny ones carved leaning against each other and now doing one with an owl perched on the top! Thank you

Looks like lots of fun, I think I may give it a try. Thanks Doug
Awesome Doug!!! Loved it!!
Very nice to see your explain carvin video. we have the same Gnome in
France (Bretagne ). so i'm going to trail one you show.
Indeed creating the shadows adds depth to the carving.
Love the videos Doug, got my first knife recently and started carving. Having lots of fun, and it's very relaxing. I made the worst mistake already and cut a piece off the tip of my finger lol. Not gonna let it get me down, was a good learning experience. You're videos are very informative, interesting, and inspiring. Thanks for the new long term hobby 👍🏻
Great one Doug. With something new for us newbies. Thanks.
It’s just so amazing to watch you do what you do Doug! 👍👍👍💯💯💯
Thank you Doug🙏🏼‼️I was literally looking at mushroom designs this week and, Boom, you do this. Great timing!👍🏻
Nice to see you back with a carving video. He is really neat and it is enjoyable to watch you carve. By the way. Snot trough is the terminology I was told years ago when I was starting carving. 👍
Another excellent tutorial, Doug, and I will give it a try after I finish the bear. :) Thanks for the tutorial.
snoot troughh, I like that even if someone else doesn't like it.
Another gorgeous little character! I love them. Please keep them coming! :) :) :)
You are truly gifted. We need to get you a dual camera setup so the second one is capturing the close up work. Thanks for sharing and teaching.

thank you so much for doing a mushroom. i have been waiting for one. You are awesome. Just love everything you do!
As usual, your video is fantastic. Thanks again.
New sub. Great video! Found you through Joe when you and he went on a canoe trip. I’m glad I subscribe. You definitely made it look fun. Can’t wait to try to make a mushroom man! Thanks
Howdy Doug! Looks like someone stole your beard! This us a super cute bbn project & its great to see you sgain.
Thank you Doug! Another great project!
Started this as soon as I saw it. Stopped the video, went and got a piece of wood.
Deceptively complex, at least for me, of course it always takes me about 2hrs to finish carving your 'simple, fast, and easy' figures, and another couple hours to paint them. Not complaining though, it's all great fun, if I'm carving, I'm happy. Getting the hat taper to look right was the hardest part, but I haven't done the gills yet, had to take a break. Love your little projects, please keep em coming..
Thank you!
PS, been wondering if you were OK, hope you were just off in the canoe on some remote Canadian backwater enjoying the summer.
So glad you are back making videos! I was being to worry!
Been subscribed to the channel for a bit for the outdoor stuff but the more I see your wood carving videos, I've finally caught the bug. Going to my local store today to get my first knife kit based on your early tutorial videos. I think I'm gonna do the pumpkin carving first. Thanks for the videos Doug!!!
Good to see you back ole buddy ..glad your well
I’ve watched several others carve and all were enjoyable, but you and your tutorials are what cost me money. I bought my first knife, some basswood and just finished my first one. It’s rough and ugly but with a bit of imagination one can actually make it out to be a WoodSpirit. LOL. Keep up the good work and thx.
Love the mushroom man !!!
Thank you for this new funny project ♥
Another great carving Doug. I might have to do one tomorrow.
Another keeper! Any little projects you can think up, I and the other new carvers are eating them up. (Just have to look at any of the carving sites in FaceBook.). You are inspiring a whole new generation of carvers. Good on ya. 😃
Hi Doug! That’s cute, you put a mushroom hat on Mr. dopey, how adorable . 🍄
Woowhoo!!! I can see you now Mr Doug! 😳🤭🙃🤓😁
From a 30 + year wood carver I would like to compliment your creativity and Imagination which are two traits that I am a bit lacking in.
Wonderful little mushrooms. My husband and I grow shiitake mushrooms. I think I might try these.
Great video, and a fun-looking carving lesson.
As always, a great tutorial! Very creative!
Thanks always enjoy you tubes. 😇🇨🇦
yes doug you are all into wood carving and i've been into working with metel for over 50yrs making all kind of parts and working automobiles doing different wax jobs i came up with and people were allways taking photos when the rain hit my car and many other peoples cars i waxed.

Thanks Doug ,good show !!!!
