This movie was SO far ahead of its time. It made an ominous warning about the ridiculous social media influencer craze that has been going on for the last few years. Makes me appreciate it more. Remember that scene where customers are fighting to buy the band's CD and one fans shouts "Gatorade is the new Snapple." A bit creepy when you think about it today with the silly Stanley coffee mug craze going on...
@@largol33t12 specific brand names of items have been going on forever. Nike, adidas, it’s just that now the new thing is water bottles. I’d say Stanley bottles cost less and waste less overall than Gatorade.
I felt the same way!! Thank you for your kind words and informing us that Adam wrote these amazing songs. I personally did not know that. His songs are so catchy!
This movie spews 2000s, its got that same vibe from pretty much half the stuff I've seen throughout my childhood. Nickelodeon sitcoms from that era are a good example.
I was 10 or 11 when this movie came out. Im almost 30 and i still remember this movie from start to finish . I still remember all the songs. It will always be one of my and cousins favorite . Brings back good memories.
I had all the merchandise when I was 14!!! The ears! The stuffed animal cat! The Barbie dolls! The soundtrack. This movie sold me on the awesome music and merchandise ! 🐱🎸🥁🎤
You are really lucky. I wanted to buy Josie's CD player (the blue one) but it's an old model that was out of production when the movie was released. It's interesting in that it's waterproof and has two massive silver locks to keep it from popping open since that would compromise the waterproof seal.
@@largol33t1 I can appreciate the obsessive researching deep dive that led you to learning about the waterproofing features on a device you may never get your hands on. Obscure and/or esoteric knowledge like that is my jam 🤣If you do ever run into one, I hope the person keeping it sees that down-the-rabbit-hole level interest and just says: "here, just take it - you obviously deserve it/want it/need it/know more about it than me or anyone else I'll ever meet" (or something along those lines :)
Vindicated by History: Critics at the time generally missed the Stealth Parody inherent in its Product Placement, and consequently saw the film's anti-corporate message as hypocritical. Its satirical aims are more widely recognized today, as is its soundtrack.
Good that we're starting to see early 2000's with nostalgia, I was worried we got stuck in the 80's till the point we created 80's nostalgia out of the 80's nostalgia.
Tops were never normal shaped in the early 2000s! They were always either halterneck, backless, asymmetrical, or pointed hem. I love how this video has all of those!
Honestly, one of the most clever movies of the 2000’s and very underrated. I will point out although I love RD, her fake bass playing is pretty bad in this movie. Tara Reid actually killed it as Mel, and you can tell she actually learned the very very very basics of playing drums for this movie. Very lastly; let’s give it up to the man, Alan Cuming. Not only for being Wyatt, but also being the director of the documentary of the Spice Girls in Spice World. Both extremely well written and hilarious movies that focused on strong, smart, talented women that will never get the credit they deserve, but AC is great in both of them
I've never seen the movie, but my parents had the soundtrack on cd and they'd play it for my sibling and I all the time hehe. The songs are packed with childhood nostalgia.
Actually, if you fully check the credits, you'll see that the three of them are also involved with the background vocals. A nice touch, I thought. 👍 But you're correct; Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo provided Rachel's singing voice.
This movie really was fun, and definitely was self-aware; there was no expectation of being taken seriously, and I think it was intentional. I also got a kick out of the "in" joke in this segment of the movie - there's a quote from a magazine saying that Barrymore, Diaz, and Liu had been tapped to play the Pussycats in the upcoming movie. Those three were in Charlie's Angels. 😋
Love this movie! Can't believe the satire was lost on the critics. Every bad review mentioned "too much product placement" THAT WAS THE DAMN POINT!! Honestly, it's no wonder Hollywood just reboots and remakes everything now. Americans don't have the bandwidth for originality anymore...
Damn! I hope Rachael Leigh Cooks look and style come back, she was so damn hot in 2001, my crush. I loved it when girls used to do their hair and makeup like that. It's like girls today just gave up.
I agree. And if they ARE wearing makeup, it's caked on and clownish... what the hell is up with these sharpie drawn boxey eyebrows and overdone contouring??
I’m 10 now in 2020 so I watched this when I was 4 with my mum she had the DVD so it’s still a good movie Update: I’m watching it right now on the 11/jun/2020 at 11:19 am
1:32 who is that girl? I was kinda thinking it was Riki Lindhome (Garfunkel and Oates), but I'm sure that's not right. Her list doesn't mention this movie, and the Cast list itself brings up this character I think. "Pointing Fan", but there's no picture or info on this woman. I guess she got lost in the acting circuit and didn't get past this movie to do something else? :(
The world wasn't ready for this movie when it came out. It has no business being as good as it is.
This movie is a black mirror episode basically

I loved this movie. It was very self-aware and didn't take itself seriously at all.
And managed to be one of the best movies of all time

Same!!! I alway fall into relationships like this too
Wow 20 years. I was super young when I saw this and I still love it

Another amazing song written by the late, great Adam Schlesinger. RIP, Adam... of all the COVID losses you might be the one that hit me the hardest.

Yea, Fountains of Wayne never got the credit they deserve
He was a power pop genius
It was very sad when he died. He also wrote many of the songs from the show crazy ex-girlfriend which were also classics.
Im still obsessed with the fashion in this movie.
yess i love the early 2000s fashion it was so iconic and fun

Yeah. Just a tragedy that we'll never forget. But at least the 2000s era was such a great time though.
Never have i seen such a huge deadpan understatement written.

The 2000s are coming back. Fashion wise at least. All these 15yr olds dressing like 2000s Britney and Paris Hilton. And I'm 1000% here for it lol
True
Pop in the early 2000s was lit let's just say that.
I'd say this is definitely Pop-punk.
But I get where you're coming from.
