- Federation Officer Shapiro crash-lands on a desert planet with no sign of water, life, or a way off. Her crew-mate Rand is no help, resigned to his fate on the hypnotic alien dunes. More About "Beachworld":
Beachworld is an adaptation of a Stephen King’s short story as part of his Dollar Baby program. Lieutenant Shapiro’s ship is destroyed in a crash on a deserted desert planet covered in sand dunes. As she begins to understand the severity of her situation, she sets out to discover other survivors and formulate a rescue plan. Her crewmate Rand is alive, but spellbound by his new surroundings. It’s up to her alone to figure out how to get back home. She finds their ship’s emergency beacon, and an unsavory salvage crew answers their distress call. Ultimately, their rescue comes too late as Shapiro has succumbed to the planet’s hypnotizing effect.

I'm going to be nice and just say that this one was not one of the better shorts I have seen here on DUST....
What are the top 3 Shorts in your view?
@@dy2cakc1 I have watched so many shorts on here....lol...and I've seen a lot of really good ones...But I haven't made a list...
Atropa definitely in my top 3. This one goes into my bottom 5. ANY DUST video that fails to answer THAT MANY questions, fails to setup any sort of storyline or plot is just a bad example of some college film school kids testing out their green screen and SFX and CGI skills. This video is bad because as a standalone its missing too much. It doesn't establish anything. It's a fail.
@@lillyanneserrelio2187 Could not agree more, with both your selection and comments.
This was doudou
To those who criticize this: Just because this is not predictable, action packed, or filled with an obvious world does not mean it is bad. It is merely different. It is an excellent adaptation.
Person 1: Hey you wanna make a short film?
Person 2: Sure, what's it going to be about?
Person 1: I dunno, we'll figure it out as we go.
Person 1: Hey you ever do any acting?
Person 2: Nah.
Person 1: Yeah me neither.
It worked for Monty Python...
Narator : And they didn't figure out anything
I honestly don't get it. Why would she start killing everyone? Is it just the planet is making her crazy? Or is she part of the trap? This is a very unsatisfying conclusion.
*Ty for saying this. I didn't want to list a bunch of reasons I was dissatisfied with this film after she found the first aid kit.*
Answer: Stephen King.
This was based on a 1984 short story by Steven King. It's mostly the same but in the story the traders who respond don't believe it's a trap until it's almost too late. But the sand (which is sentient) attacks and the surviving fed crewmember plus the ship escape. She doesn't go crazy, she doesn't hallucinate a ghost crewman.
Dust shorts are almost contractually obligated to have a downbeat ending. So they changed the original ending where the original survivor is sane and escapes, to one where she is crazy and doesn't.
@@helbent4 It's also, like.. just different enough that King can't slap it with a plagerism lawsuit.
@@mariedillingham199 considering how inexpensively he sells movie rights, I doubt that is an issue
After watching "atropa" over the last week period, filmmakers have to realize the bar has been raised in terms of story and character development and production. This one got off the ground ., but not quite ready to soar
I haven't read King's Skeleton Crew since the 90's and barely remember the story, only that the planet was living and made people go crazy and stay, and that one of the crew ended up eating the sand to become part of the planet. I thought it was a good take on the story.
Atropa kind of screwed everyone else over by raising the bar SO HIGH. Jus' sayin'.
@@jaqcp I liked Atropa, but the ending, as with most time travel stories, was a bit off.
You are right.
Yea atropa was so good and I loved the way it ended. If it ended with the time loop restarting I would have been tight.
The "looker" (Shapiro) and the dunes were beautiful, but otherwise it was pretty much waste of time.
I'm not sure if it is Stephen's fault, but this story was not worth the effort. And I love sci-fi.
Should have stuck to the original story
There's something about these Dust movies - a common thread that runs through all of their productions - that I can't explain per se - but whatever it is, it connects to me as soon as I press play. It pleasantly keeps me company while I watch, and when the video is over, I sense its absence - like I miss it. So I've been spending a lot of time here. I'd love to be able carry that feeling all day long. It would change how I live my life.
You are missing the common thread-?
...
Watch The American Dream by George Carlin... you might figure it out...
@@gentlerain8537 Much appreciated - I'll check it out tonight! I'll let you know what I find.
I appreciate the work the crew put into this short. Thanks y'all! (Edited for spelling)
Hello there👋👋, how are you doing today!hope you’re having a good day?GOD BLESS YOU!!!❤️
Aw well we thank you so much for watching our short! Lots of Blood, sweat, and tears went into it but only one of those was fake!
After spending a week watching something as good and well done as ATROPA. Watching something so badly done is a little frustrating.
It was going to be almost impossible to top ATROPA.
Whaaa😭
Honestly this a valid
I read your comment first then watched it.
I agree, it's not the best I've watched.
Some the comments i read on here are written by imbeciles these people have zero funds zero backing a camera a few friends and imagination and come up with works of art then some "smarty pants critic" comes on here and compares it productions costing millions if not billions
I love dust
Some great shots of the dunes.
However:
After watching, I'm not sure if there's no story or multiple unrelated stories here. Other than a crash on a planet of sand and the use of some names, this didn't have anything to do with the Steven King short story.
Interesting for sure but the plot certainly made it hard for me to be able to "connect the dots" in this one. Not knowing where she was or why things were the way they were and wanting to get off the planet then throwing away her chance to flee. Naw...just doesn't quite add up for me. Unless I'm overlooking something. The dunes did provide huge prop savings for set designers. ;)
🔵 I agree,... It didn't make sense to me at ALL that she walked away from the ship in the end, Why didn't she take that ship home?
WHAT PLOT!? And this effort was about as interesting as watching tarten paint dry.
Rand was actually the imaginary character that she made up to justify the conflict within her.
One part of her really graves to escape the planet - which is Life. The other part of her really graves to stay and follow her husband - which is Death.
She did that without realizing it until the rescuing crews confirm that there's no Rand.
As Rand dissolves, she lost the only anchor left to stay sane. The conflict now is too great that lead her to complete insanity.
There's nothing I like better than watching a movie adaptation where the director ignored the source material.
A massive disappointment.
*There'd be no way she could walk those sandy dunes with that laceration irl. Really great interpretation of pain shown at the beginning.*
I gave it a thumbs up because there was a serious effort shown.
All we can do is swing for the fences :) thanks so much for watching!
This film feels like a punch-line in search of a story.
Like most of Steven King's works, this is a half-baked and fully lame excuse for a premise tied to a predictable and lazy "twist," then converted into something technically viewable but hardly watchable with absolute garbage production value. Look at what they did to The Dark Tower! If his Magnum Opus isn't safe from shenanigans and chicanery, then of course his short stories are going to be worthless fodder. Dude never fails to disappoint me. :/
Someone at DUST let his 4 yr. old make a movie for dust !
@@CVHansen07 just more crap that makes no sense
Exactly how I felt. So many of Dust's films are like this though. Great ideas in search of someone who can really flesh them out because too many of them start off quite promising and then just peter out at the end into obscurity. Pity.
@@CVHansen07 sounds like you don't like the guy
And you can't really blame him for bad adaptations
Given the expansive raw feel, it’s hard to believe this was done on a shoestring budget. Bravo! It’s all a matter of perspective.
They saved costs with the actors and story.
My wife just explained the Stephen King story to me. I agree with her that this dropped all the good parts that made it work as a story. I guess it would have been too expensive to film for a small time crew?
You're wife is right: and on this budget they could have shot it exactly as the original, with maybe 1 or 2 extra special effects (the sand-hand, etc). What a disappointment this was. :(

This film increased my opinion that I do not need to read anything written by Stephen King.

I think @ScreenRant should make a PITCH MEETING about this short... because THIS PIECE OF SHORT somehow got financed and produced, just can't imagine how the pitch went trhu!
Certified Gold!!!!!
It's been awhile since I've seen a better mutilation of a Stephen King story. At least they got the sand right.
Interesting start, it would be nice to see the development happening now on the psychedelic planet! 💫
I love it even though it makes no sense
Interesting... but you lost me at the end. Kind of made the whole thing pointless, unless I'm missing something.
Go read Stephen King's short story by the same name. Its much better
I was lost, too. I'll have to read the story.
I think the sand or planet is sentient and traps people who land on it. Stephen King puts out so much crap.
@@Sonofspam64 He certainly does!
Dust, best Sci Fi channel on the net!
Rough crowd...This would not be the first planet that consumes people souls.
This would not be the first where a crewman hurt their head and went crazy.
This would not be the first time a short story ended with beachfront property.
This would not be the first time somebody misread adapted.
All in all, a nice little ditty even if it left a lot of people perplex, confused, and somewhat jaded, but alas we had just been spoiled by one of the better mini-series we have seen in a while.

The rescue ship captain reminded me of Tyrone from Chapelle show… This wasn’t a bad thing, but the movie generally wasn’t among the best shorts available on Dust.
When bad acting meets a bad story.
Loved seeing this, great job, Jackie!
Ah, yes, I remember reading this story back in the eighties- unusual journey into pure sci-fi for Stephen King if memory serves!
Excellent, as always.

Great job, Jackie and crew! I will have to reread the original but sounds like you gave it your own spin and it's a fun, dark film.
Thank you so much for watching Daniel!! I put a spin on the story, but if you read the first draft of the script, it sticks straight to the original material. Once we figured out there was no way we could make it work with our budget, we had to get a little creative.
Yeah, about as much fun as an icepick in the forehead....

Nice actors. Nice effects. Nice scenery. Nice camera work. All it needs is a plot.
Wow! What a great concept! I will understand it some day!
A wonderful short. Exactly the kind of story and pacing I enjoy. It doesn't try to do too much. I was a bit worried when the second crew showed up that it was going to get over-complicated, but it stuck the landing. Well done.
AW thank you for watching!!
I was more worried when the el cheapo 70's era special effects drug dream thing started.

This is s summary of Steven King' Beachworld from Wikipedia. Beachworld" is set at an unspecified time in the distant future. Among the few clues to the date is the passing reference that the last of the Beach Boys had died eight thousand years previously.
The catastrophic crash-landing of a Federation spacecraft on an uncharted planet made up entirely of sand leaves one crewman, Grimes, dead while Rand and Shapiro survive. Rand stares out over the sand dunes as both men associate the endless rolling dunes with a beach. Rand becomes hypnotized by the dunes and refuses to move from the very spot he's standing on or drink water. Shapiro also feels drawn to the dunes but, unlike Rand, finds this hypnosis frightening and is relieved to go inside their ship where the dunes are out of sight. When a trader spacecraft arrives in response to Shapiro's beacon, the crew initially treat Shapiro's account with skepticism. However, they become convinced when they're unable to get Rand away from the dunes.
Rand resists leaving the planet, and the sand reveals itself to be sentient. It prevents Rand's rescue by damaging a sampler android sent from the ship and sending a hand of sand up to stop a tranquilizer dart. The rescue ship escapes just in time, with Shapiro and the trader's captain both narrowly avoiding a giant hand of sand. Rand, left alone, stares up at the ship as it disappears, and then begins to pile handfuls of sand into his mouth.
*Stephen
It ain't a beach if there's no ocean! Shoulda called it Desert World! 😆

I think Steven King lost a marble thinking this one up.. 😂
Totally was trying to get into this but little things just stopped me from doing so. You ask what little things? I guess the smallest of these would be getting her rank wrong; she is wearing Captain's bars but is called Lieutenant. It is the details that make Dust special in the short film world.
I like her style
Another Great video
Strike 1: pulling out something from a wound.
Strike 2: I would expect a Federation officer not to come across like a hysterical American child.
You've never seen people in uniform act like toddlers? You're pretty lucky.
I knew I should have taken that left turn at Albuquerque!
The majority of these stories are by far way better than what currently comes out of Hollyweird. Kudos to you and keep up the great work. This is story telling at its best.
Her face went from clean to dirt-smudged back to clean before she even stood up. She should have instantly dropped the severed forearm instead of holding onto it and shaking it around so it could wobble like a rubber prop. Should have dug some craters or impact trenches for the debris instead of just laying it on the sand. She's wearing captain's bars but got called lieutenant. And the end made no sense whatsoever.
Pretty sure it's Navy based which means those are lieutenant bars. Captains wear eagles. Navy has to be different after all.
@@blick86 Actually, this was apparently science-fiction... So the use of either US army or naval rank insignia were incongruous with what was (one guesses) some space-faring scenario in the future, where it is doubtful that contemporary insignia would still be in use...
.
Another cheap prop, probably bought from a US Military surplus store for a few bucks, or donated by somebody's serving boy/girlfriend.
Even for a small-scale production, there's no reason they can't avoid the screamingly-obvious flaws:
She has a major wound in her quadricep, which fortunately never bleeds and only mildly hinders long-range hikes.
She's a lieutenant with captain's bars on her collar. Her captain had the same bars, so I guess he's also a lieutenant... captain?
"Oh, by the way, we're telepaths now. No biggie."
Why, in every "weird stuff going on" tale, is there ALWAYS one person who's just immediately in harmony with the spooks? Is this a TV Trope yet?
"I'll just walk on my mangled leg at random in the desert until I run across supplies. Alien deserts play by videogame rules, right?"
When exposition fails to explain the plot, there's always psychic dream-vision acid-trips, right?
I suppose Spook-Whisperer used his telepathy to follow her across the desert for... reasons?
He put a startling amount of effort into a facial cut so shallow it only bled for one second. Her skin must be like Kevlar. He couldn't have just punched her to display his hostility?
"This injector has enough valuable drug to pay for our side-trip, so I clearly need to waste it subduing this captive who's outnumbered, injured, tired, dehydrated, and smaller than me, instead of handing it to my captain so I have both hands free."
The classic "enemy freezes in place when stabbed anywhere by any tiny sharp thing". Should also be a TV Trope.
Inexplicable Sudden Insanity! Wrapping up poorly-concieved plots since HP Lovecraft's day!
Sorry, but I can’t help but watch it and find myself keep thinking “Walk without rhythm, and you won’t attract a worm”...
Beaches be crazy, yo. ;)
I don't get it. I have no idea what happened here? Was there a story? Is everyone really dead? I don't get it.
