So many 'Who Am I" questions he got with just birth and death dates. And he would give a full answer including the middle name. One I remember went like this: (Tony) Born in 1947 I entered Congress in - (Cary) -(pause) James (pause) Danforth (another pause) Quayle. (Tony)- Correct.
I remember watching this. I had just got married and we visited my parents in law. My mother in law was obsessed by the show and we had to sit in silence while she tried to beat the competitors.
My dad was the same. My mum was pushing him to go on the show. He finally entered and got it. He was on a winning streak, about 4 nights, and ended up being beaten by cary. The best person to be beaten by.
Cary Young v David Bock is just about peak quizzing in Australian TV history. Virginia Noel had been at that level too but I think she was more focussed on her medical career by the time these championships came around. Throw in Fran Powell and you've got probably the four best Australian quizzers of the 1980s.
I believe that the winner of this match actually appeared on the American show against their champion and a notable Canadian contestant (considering Canada never had their own version). He pretty much left his competition in the dust.
Thanks Steve for sharing. The anticipation of the questions is just staggering, and to win it with literally a kick after the siren! And, I can't even work out what the 2nd last question is that Cary answered (What starting with D is another name for an esh....) Anyone care to enlighten me?
Tony: What is--Cary? Cary: A soporific. Tony: correct. Who wrote--David? David: Aeschylus. Tony: Correct. What is--Cary? Cary: The Antikythera mechanism. Tony: Correct. What is--David? David: Pi squared divided by six. Tony: Correct. Who invented--Dave? Dave: Bugger. **buzzer sounds**
What's going on here at 2:20 the question shouldn't have been read out at all after he buzzed in. They're all doing it though, buzzing early and hoping to hear a few more mords of the question to help. The bible question was so obvious though as he buzzed literally before the question began.
It was always mostly male contestants back then with the occasional token woman. So different these days, with girls now getting an equal education and achieving top marks in schools all over Australia.
You would probably find even if this was today that the majority of Sale of the Century finalists would be male. We aren't just talking about smart people we are talking about the best of the best making it onto the show. Like it or not the studies show that when it comes to IQ males and females are almost identical in score.... but the bell curve is much more pronounced for men.... meaning that there are more intelligent men than women at the top but also more stupid men than women at the bottom.
Bring back Sale of the Century. In regard to OP's comment, it would be at least mildly interesting to see the most elite male contestant compete against the most elite female contestant. Of course these days the genders don't stop there do they, would have to have a panel of 76 different contestants for true equality and diversity.
RIP Cary - always remembered the skill as a kid. That 60 seconds, wow next level stuff.
Of all of the great champions over the years, Cary is the one I've never forgotten.
Absolutely. What a champ.
Even Tim Hollaran (from Connecticut in USA) has praise and admiration for Cary Young.

I also remember David almost beating Cary and being his toughest rival.
That is phenomenal. I tried to play along at home and could barely get a word in edge-ways.

Honestly I didnt know a singe answer in that 60 seconds
RIP Cary 🏆
Holden. Australia's driving future! I guess no one can predict the future.
Cameron Whyte No more Commodores either
Good old fashioned, pound for pound contest this was. Outstanding stuff 👍

I think Vince Smith should be in there too.
David Poltorak would be there too however he may be stronger now because he is older
Evelyn Lych was pretty good also
Ikbarr Menendez the third also..
That was exciting
If thats not the best car prize, i dont know what is!
Did he end up winning the Calais do you know?
Wow. What a legendary clutch!
Some of the prizes won would be worth quite a bit, especially the Calais! Thanks mate!
Only one wrong answer in the final 60 seconds and that's because she buzzed in too early and didn't hear the question
That's going down to the wire .. stunning finish
Don't pick the home viewer. Don't pick the home viewer
Fat lot of good you were, Barber!
@@rowkaz3510 They never put the money behind the home viewer
I remember Cary from all those years ago.
Geez 1987 years ago so old
RIP Cary
Carey inspired me as a young kid. He was a machine!
They were quick
I wonder about those battles between Cary Young (Of Australia) and Tim Holleran (of Connecticut in America) were a sight to see.
6:33 Sparky sounds like she's a bit over it all 😂
2:43 - That's not a close call...
*THAT'S* a close call!
Still had the USSR, Eastern Europe, and Mandela was in jail.
A true champion
I watched cary at 1997. I never watched cary win at 1987
Tony Barber looks young there, so does Cary Young, (no pun intended).
What a game, you rarely saw contestants get to 100 and not win

+bluebear1985 Yes, that's correct.
+bluebear1985 Actually, this happened AFTER the International Invitational Tournament. They plugged the World Championship after Cary won the IIT.
Tubewings He wasn't saying it happened before the World Championship.
+Brendan Richards My mistake.
Surprising that they used a Canadian player instead of a UK player (since they had their own version) for the US world tournament.
the body language on the winner is hilarious
Those $1 coins might be worth a lot now, especially since Lizzy went to the Pearly Gates

What starting with D is another name for an airship?
dirigible
@@gillage163 Thanks so much Marcus! Tony and Cary spoke so quickly I couldn't make it out for ages :-D
Vale Cary Young. Gee if he was one of the Chasers these days, he would kick arse
Funnily enough, David Poltorak's stint as a Chaser - going by the nickname "The Professor" - should be airing soon. 🙂
DA da Da da da... DAAAAA!
* Money comes down *
🥲

There is nothing like a rebadged Opel to make you feel like the special Australian in the room!
national championship
Didn't you have more Sale of the century episodes?
I think Family Feud was better suited to intellectual types.
That gold coin is worth over three grand now. All the other prizes are probably worth about three.
Championship
How funny is watching them present a bogan car on a pedestal like it's a Rolls Royce haha.
You mean the one with the best engine Japan made in the 80s?
That car is worth $90k plus today lol.
Yeah but he lost to Fran Powell.

@@frankmat Also don't forget that men have better reflexes than women. They are possibly also faster thinkers
(All for prehistoric reasons...)

It was a tie between Davis and Cary, he answered after the buzzer but they cheated and gave it to him instead of having a tie breaker. How wrong
Did he stick around with that wife??
Why wouldn't he
