  • Big Al's skills as a predator are put to the test when he and two other Allosauruses face a herd of Diplodocus.
    Broadcast in 1999, Walking with Dinosaurs set out to create the most accurate portrayal of prehistoric animals ever seen on the screen. Combining fact and informed speculation with cutting-edge computer graphics and animatronics effects, the series took two years to make.

    Some kids grew up with Star Wars - I grew up with this. This scene was always one of my favorites, and I still think it's one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. The CGI doesn't look quite as good now as it did to me at 12 years old, but the nostalgia more than makes up for it.

      I’d be lying if I said seeing allosaurus weaving in and out of the diplodocus herd didn’t remind me of a space battle in Star Wars. Must be the music, or maybe just seeing them navigate around the giant animals reminds me of scenes in the Star Wars movies where starfighters would fly past the big ships

      It even opens its mouth a little during the animation, so the editors didn’t forget to put that sound effect there. Like, the opening of the allosaur’s mouth is barely noticeable at all, and they still decided to put that sound effect in there, just in case some eagle eyed viewer did notice it.

      It is so cool that they showed some Allosaurus including Big AL hunting Diplodocus as a team. I did actually know that Allosaurus and maybe also Torvosaurus and Ceratosaurus hunted large herbivorous dinosaurs like Diplodocus, Apatosaurus, Camarasaurus, Stegosaurus and Camptosaurus in packs and groups. Do you think that Tyrannosaurus, Daspletosaurus, Gorgosaurus, Albertosaurus, Gigantosaurus and Mapusaurus did something similar with Ticeratops, Styracosaurus, Centrosaurus, Ornithomimus, Struthomimus, Edmontosaurus, Corythosaurus, Euopephalus, Anklyosaurus, Pteranodon, Queztalcoatlus, Ciomolestes, Didelphodon, Argentinosaurus and Amargasaurus?

    This deserved a theatrical release. This is still so good to watch. I don't care about the effects quality. To, this still looks damn good. There's so much detail in the way they move. It's insane to look at how the fat jiggles and skin moves, while the muscles underneath stretch and flex. It is an outstanding amount of details that brings the dinosaurs to life. The way the camera moves along them, with that heroic Benjamin Bartlett score playing throughout the scene. This is as perfect as it could have been. They outdid themselves through and through.

    This has to be the greatest dinosaur scene in the history of the world! My top favorites in what would lost likely be a realistic battle, and the Allosaurus didn't even have to fight the Diplodocus! This is how I imagine dinosaurs hunting, living, and thriving! Thanks Walking with Dinosaurs!

    • @theotheagendashill818
      @theotheagendashill818 6 лет назад +1

      Its not realistic - the diplodocuses and the big allosaurus that come at the end are oversized,the allosaurs are too bulky.Also,they would never been able to take down animal at that size,Allosaurus probably hunted only juvenile sauropods.

    • @lukecanning94
      @lukecanning94 6 лет назад +10

      THEO the agenda troll yes but its the most realistic dinosaur behaviors. There is no big boss battle like in most movies and documentaries but instead the allosaurs pick out the weakest sauropod and wait for it to die from its illnesses. Remember this was made in 2000 so dont expect it to be up to date.

      Yeah a Diplodocus that size would just walk through the entrapment. An adult Camarasaurus lentus is small enough that a gang could take it down, though.
      Also, they would wear it down further by biting and hacking at it, not rely on the sun.

    The neck of Sauropods was actually incredibly mascular and should have much more soft tissue presented. Biting the neck is not as easy as movies suggests. A theropod like Allosaurus with its weak bite would have a hard time cutting through even the skin. HOWEVER, the bite of Allosaurus shows that it had a very wide gape opening. Meaning a weaker bite force yeah (which was estimated to be around 2,000 PSI), but a slashing axe bite that, if broke the skin, could cause massive bleeding and internal organs rupture.

      Xand W: that's true. And I respect the WWD documentary for showing them as actual animals. Nevertheless, I would like an updated version that wouldn't shit all over the original like the WWD 3D did.

    This sequence is one of the greatest triumphs of the Walking With/Haines/Framestore franchise. All the majesty and terror and impact of watching real documentary footage of a real hunt in nature, one where the animals behave like animals, make life-or-death mistakes, harrying the prey into exhaustion. All of the excitement of a contemporary natural history series, predator and prey, life and death, natural selection writ large. All of that blood and breath and grit and muscle, all of that moving ecology. Except it's the Jurassic, and it's dinosaurs. You've stepped through time. This is the entire project realised in its ultimate form imho.

    My most favorite allosaurus skeleton is Big Al it's kind of sad because he died as a mature adolescent and not as a full grown adult he had a hard life though. Big Al's skeleton is is special because it tells us what happened to the life of one of the Jurassic most successful predators and what I love about Big Al is that his infection on his middle toe surprisingly fossilized with the rest of his skeleton and he was known for the dinosaur that lived fast and died young
