This is the first vid I have seen about this camera. It's been around for a few years and no one has made a review. I have the Micro Studio 4k and it is a gem for studio work, and live concerts.
wonderful info!!! Quick question: What are your thoughts on the Studio 4K with either the M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-600mm F5.0-6.3 IS or the M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F2.8 PRO OM, along with a LANC controller, to achieve long zoom for live sports broadcast scenarios?
Great video thank you! I’ve made a bunch of notes on the lenses you’ve mentioned. May I ask what lens fid you use for your talking head vid, assuming the camera was a BMD Studio?
Awesome video! Thanks for putting it together. Do the last 2 lens you talk about work with the zoom and focus handle controls from BM? This would be for the f2.8 wide and telephoto lenses.
Thanks Scott Rose. I’m afraid they don’t, only ‘active’ lenses (like the four I mentioned) or cine-servo lenses like the Canon CN-E lens I mentioned (with an adapter) work with zoom and focus control.
@@DigiProTips This might be the answer to what I'm looking for for months. So are you saying that the zoom control works with a metabones speedbooster + any lens with electric zoom? I have the cheap viltrox speedbooster and not even the focus control works with that. Since the MFT Lenses with EZ seem to be pretty bad, I'd would be great to have a larger variety with other sensors as well. EDIT: Oh nevermind, just played it back and you said it in the video, thanks!
9:08 Which generation of the BlackMagic Studio Cameras are we talking about? I was pretty sure the BMD Studio 4K Plus and Pro announced in 2021 (before this video) don't support LANC controllers but instead require BMDs Zoom and Focus demands that use USB connections.
We use a BMD Studio Camera on a 30-foot-wide stage, on a dolly behind the side curtains. The Lumix 12-35mm f2.8 works great, but isn't quite long enough for close-ups. What I find most flexible is the Leica 12-60mm f 2.8-4. Yes it is a bit slow, but in practice, a performer's face is usually more illuminated than the background, so ~f3.2 for wide shots down to f4 for close-ups works pretty well. In addition, the Leica 12-60mm is noticeably more parfocal than the Lumix 12-35mm, which can make or break a live zoom during a performance.
Good point on the parfocal front! For those reading, take this into account and weigh up whether you’ll be fixed rigging your cameras or needing to be flexible on the fly, in which case, parfocal is definitely a consideration. Thanks Fallen Star Features
This video could not have come at a better time. Been looking into purchasing one of these cameras. Another question I had was whether you would recommend the Black Magic Design Studio 4k Plus for church live streaming. I've heard that the AF is not too good on this camera for this application.
Hey Joshua, glad you found it useful! I’d say that really depends if you plan on having the camera manned or remote. If manned then I’d rely on the cameraman to focus but if remote then the AF is not what you’d get from some of the newer DSLR’s at the moment, though the camera was never really meant for that purpose to be honest. It’s a studio camera and is usually manned. Hope that helps?
@@DigiProTips I appreciate u getting back to me. Is there another camera that you would reccomend for 4k live streaming? My budget is $1600 but can go up to $2000 if the upside is there.
@@joshriv 100% go for the studio. Beautiful cameras. You shouldn’t have to worry about the focus, cause if it’s manned, then they can change focus, if it isn’t, then it’s set and forget anyway. Not for run and gun anyway so even if it’s on a tripod you probably won’t have to be doing much focusing anyway?
I hope you are able to find time to answer this question. I'm purchasing the BM Studio 6K Pro camera, and I am hoping to find a wide-angle fast lens that will complement a teleprompter within my budget range. Lens Budget: $999.00 Teleprompter budget: $1,500.00 Can you guide me in the right direction please? Thank you.
That Canon Cine Servo CN-E 18-80mm T4.4is all the money literally... I wonder, you were contemplating all these options, some really pricey, how come you did not look into investing in some video lights for the studio to make shooting at f/4 or even f/5.6 feasible? Imho if you just wanted to go with a single lens to cover all situations from wide to tele, on a native mount there is no other than the Zuiko 12-100 f/4...
Thank you for the information, could you do the same video for the 6k version with the EF mount, I'm looking for affordable powerzoom lenses with EF mount.
Is it a good choice for M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F4.0 PRO? Maybe f4.0 is not like f2.8 for that studio camera? And what about M.Zuiko Digital 45mm F1.8? Both lenses work with zoom and focus control? And how to calculate 0,41x for zoom? Thanks.
Hey nadzieja TV, what I would say is that be mindful of the f4.0. The Studio Cameras don’t have very big sensors so they need a lot of light to get the great image quality you want. f/4.0 at 40mm (which is an 80mm full frame equivalent) would be ok but at 150mm (300mm FF) would be down at f/5.6 which I feel would not let enough light in (unless you have a fantastically bright studio set up). The 45mm (90mm FF) at f/1.8 would be really nice on the Studio Camera. As far as I’m aware neither are ‘active lenses’ so they would still require manual control at the camera itself.
@@DigiProTips Thank you. So the Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 35-100mm f2.8 II Power OIS is still a good choice? What is the zoom in the calculations for cameras? 10x? 12x? My calculation is like this: M.Zuiko Digital ED 12‑200mm F3.5-6.3 lens has zoom 16.6x (200 / 12 = 16.6x), M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm 1:4.0 PRO lens the zoom magnification ratio is 3.75x (150 / 40 = 3.75x). Is that right?
Decent lens I’d say. Good amount of light on the sensor at f/2.8, 70-200 35mm equivalent so nice for talking head shots from further away from set while getting some nice bokeh. It also has image stabilisation so good for panning and scanning the camera around.
Can we mount B4 zoom lenses on a Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro G2 ? If so, can power and rec be triggered from zoom and focus control ? Or maybe from CCU ? Thank you
Hi. I know your video is from 2022, but I just saw it now. Can you tell me if manual Cine Lens, like the Sirui or 7Artisans work normally in this camera? I dont have experience with broadcast video cameras.
I just unboxed my new Cinema Camera 4K and mounted a simple EF 35mm f1.2 lens, and for whatever reason, I can't trigger the auto-focus at all. I've tried the auto-focus button on the back of the camera, and the ATEM studio software and it doesn't respond at all. Do you think there's a firmware issue? If so, do you know where can I check or update my firmware? * EDIT* I found a firmware update. I installed it and it still doesn't autofocus. It does still let me change the iris, but that's all.

I'm curious. With the voltage requirement being 12v at 5.0 amps DC, do they make an adapter that I can plug into a standard automotive outlet? With a larger zoom lens it's certainly is capable at shooting things at range in outdoor lighting conditions. Just might be hard to see the screen in that kind of light and you'd probably have to go HDMI into an ATEM and adjust in a shaded area remotely.
Here's a stupid question, do you need to use an ATEM mini to live stream with a Blackmagic Design camera? Say we're just running over a video transmitter like Hollyland Mars 400s, and into a camlink or video capture card on the other side plugged into our computer. Could you use OBS to do all the switching "in house"? I know you would have more functionality probably running through an ATEM, but would that work?
Hey Mount-It! Not a stupid question at all. The Studio Cameras are simply cameras with outputs, so you can use them however you like. It’s definitely possible to do it the way you have described. The only thing to be wary of is latency between visual and audio. With a transmission interface, capture interface and then processing with OBS you may find a significant gap in your audio and video signal, unless you are running them all through the same routing? If not, you would need to add some delay to your audio in OBS to match your video signal before streaming out. But yeah, it’s all possible, you don’t have to use an ATEM at all if you don’t want to. I’ve used them with plenty of other switchers over the years. Thanks!
