Home of Arizona State University, the city remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state thanks to both its local culture and its beautiful scenery. When you arrive in Tempe, Arizona, you will quickly notice a large mountain with an "A" engraved on the side. As one might expect, the "A" stands for ASU or Arizona State University. Formed out of loose rocks in 1938 and then later permanently engraved with cement and steel, the "A" has given the mountain, known formally as Hayden Butte, the colloquial nickname of “A” Mountain. Hiking up Hayden Butte is a must for nature-loving visitors to Tempe, and those that get to the top will be treated with an expansive view of everything that Tempe has to offer. On one side is Tempe’s bustling downtown area, while the other side features the beautiful Tempe Town Lake.
Visiting Tempe Town Lake is a must when you find yourself in Tempe, and so is visiting the city’s downtown area! Tempe Town Lake can be explored via boat or paddleboard. There’s also a bridge going across Tempe Town Lake named the Old Avenue Bridge, and it is featured on the National Register of Historic Places. Why did you not mention a visit to our ZOO? Altho it is named, 'The Phoenix Zoo' -- you probably know that it is located right there on the Phx-Tempe
border; next to 2 other Tempe places of interest to visit which you mentioned previously:
1. Papago Park with the Hole in the Rock; and
2. the Desert.Botanical Gardens.
