Cecilia Valdés is both a novel by the Cuban Cirilo Villaverde (1812--1894), and a zarzuela (operetta) based on the novel. It is a work of great importance for its quality, and its revelation of the interaction of classes and races in Cuba.
The novel:
The first version of the novel Cecilia Valdés o la Loma del Angel appeared in Havana in 1839; its definitive and larger version, was published in New York in 1882, being re-edited several times. It has never been out of print in Spanish, and there are several English editions (as Cecilia Valdes or Angel Hill). It is widely regarded as the best Cuban novel of the 19th century.
Synopsis
Action (in both the novel and the zarzuela) takes place in colonial Cuba about 1810. The young and beautiful light skinned mulatta, Cecilia Valdés, is the illegitimate daughter of powerful land magnate and slave trader, Candido de Gamboa. Leonardo de Gamboa is his legitimate son. Leonardo falls in love with Cecilia not realizing that she is his own half-sister, and they become lovers. At the same time, hopelessly in love with Cecilia is also another man, the poor black musician, José Dolores Pimienta. His advances Cecilia rejects; and she conceives Leonardo's son.
Love between Leonardo and Cecilia does not last, however. He abandons her and becomes betrothed to a white aristocratic woman, a certain Isabel Ilincheta. Cecilia turns to the faithful Pimienta to plan revenge. On the day of his wedding he is assassinated on the steps of the cathedral by Pimienta who acts on the instigation of Cecilia. He is executed, and she is thrown in an insane asylum.
Cecilia Valdés reveals the intricate problems of race relations in Cuba. There are the elite social circles of Spanish-born and creole whites; the growing number of mulattos, of which Cecilia is one, and the blacks, some slaves, some freed men. The blacks are also divided between those who were born in Africa and those who were born in Cuba, those who worked on the sugar plantation and those who worked in the households of the wealthy in Havana. Cecilia Valdés is a canvas displaying the sexual, social, and racial interaction of the Cubans of the day.
Zarzuela:
The zarzuela is in two acts with music by Gonzalo Roig. The libretto was by Agustin Rodríguez and José Sánchez-Arcilla, based on the novel Cecilia Valdés, o la Loma del Angelby Cirilo Villaverde. The storyline is about a tragedy of manners, love and revenge, in colonial Cuban society of the early 19th century.

Critique:
In Villaverde's novel (completed in 1882), the melodramatic plot serves as a background for social life in Cuba, with slavery, injustice, crises and personal tragedies, following colorful presentation in detailed characterization and description, even to the point that plot itself loses its pace at times, long before reaching its climax, as if author had lost interest in his story and wanted to finish it as fast as possible.
In Roig's zarzuela, however, dramatic element is more exposed, more consistent and in swift action, presented as an interesting unrolling story pointing toward inevitable climax, which shows great talent and theatrical experience on the part of the composer, the piece containing mixture of traditional Cuban music, with all its genres, forms and vivid rhythms and dances, interlaced in good balance with predominantly romantic in style music of the Western tradition, particularly in melody and orchestration.

Es una verdadera lástima que los cubanos nacidos despues de la década del 60, no conocieron a esta Martha Pérez, una soprano como pocas. La dicción , la claridad de la letra, que no se pierde en la claridad de una voz exquisita.

Una obra maravillosa escrita como novela por el grandioso Cirilo Villaverde y hecha opereta por el también grandioso Gonzalo Roig. Obra escrita por cubanos y cantada maravillosamente por cubanos. Muchas veces la gente fuera de Cuba no se cree que en aquella isla, alguna vez maravillosa, se pudieran hacer cosas como ésta.
Efectivamente, la grandeza de Cuba es de tal naturaleza, que fue el país de América Latina donde florecieron con mayor fuerza los géneros líricos, a pesar de ser una nación mucho menor en territorio y población que Argentina, México y Brasil. Siendo la potencia que es en cuento a la creatividad y encanto de sus géneros populares, que marcaron toda la música contemporánea, compositores como Jorge Ankerman, José White, Luis Casas Romero, Moisés Simons, Eliseo Grenet, Gonzalo Roig, Ernesto Lecuona, Alejandro García Caturla, entre otros, vistieron de largo la música cubana, dándole una dimensión mundial e inmortal.
Es una hobra que la escuche por primera vez a los 18 años, y tengo un disco Montilla de su primera edición en las voces horiginales, es mi joya más preciada.
Hola Carlos, si, esta grabacion la utilice por estar en mejor estado de fidelidad, a mi no me gusta procesar las grabaciones y limpiarles el sonido porque pierden tambien mucha calidad pero en la biblioteca tengo ese album que tu tambien posees en mi coleccion de zarzuelas cubanas, en los tocadiscos es la que casi siempre pongo para ecuchar en casa, en los aparatos de alta fidelidad el sonido aunque tenga algun ruidito el disco es spectacular, muy diferente a lo que se puede disfrutar en el computador pero bueno por lo menos podemos compartir por esta via.

Francisco Naya (Panchito) en Cecilia Valdez en dos actuaciones distintas, una con la soprano Cubana Martha Perez y la segunda con la soprano Cubana America Crespo. Inolvidables la bellisimas voces de Zoraida Marrero, Hortensia Coalla, Blanca Varela, Maruja Gonzales, Armando Pico, Manolo Alvarez Mera, etc.
Esta preciosa Opereta Cubana fue compuesta por el Maestro Gonzalo Roig.
No hay duda......RECORDAR ES VOLVER A VIVIR.

Marta Perez Y Francisco Naya se lucen en esta grabacion, esta coleccion de discos era de mi padre, conoci a Marta y a blanca Varela ya muy mayores, no tengo edad para haberlas visto en escana pero muy lindas personas y America Crespo visitaba mi casa regularmente, tengo sus discos y Cintas tambien. Sr. Armando Ruiz, un excelente recuerdo de una gran artista. En la secuencia de fotografías aparece la imagen de una Cecilia Valdés en la volanta, se trata de la soprano lírica María Teresa Tolón. Infelizmente no tengo grabaciones, todas desaparecieron a no ser un par de vídeos en youtube. La foto viene de mi blog El sinsonte no anida en el polo, donde intento rescatar la memoria de otra gran soprano, mi amada madre que en paz descanse. Gracias
+Tenchy Tolón Gracias por esta informacion, me honra mucho su comentario, cierto, compile varias fotos de diferentes interpretes y escenas historicas para representar la historia, tambien yo he tratado de conseguir material de esa gran soprano, Maria Teresa Tolon, su mama, no tengo sus discos en mi coleccion aqui pero es possible que en la coleccion de Cuba, donde nos quedo una casa que el gobierno nunca pudo confiscar, puede que encuentre sus grabaciones, todavia no la he podido revisar completa pues viajar a Cuba es siempre un poco pesado para mi pero, por el momento, se lo puedo encomendar a mi prima que esta a cargo de la casa, cuando pueda viajar, tambien utilizare algunos contactos y amigos que tengo alli en los teatros, la opera y circulos liricos. De mas esta decirle que sera la primera en saber lo que pude localizar y desde luego cuente con mi apoyo para contribuir al recuerdo y vigencia de Maria Teresa Tolon. Saludos!...

Tengo un long play que nos envio una. querida amiga desde Cuba y cantan una parte de Cecilia Valdez esta es nuestra verdadera musica la musica soñadora la musica del sentimiento cubano de aquella epoca tan bella que vivieron nuestros antepasados y que pudimos disfrutar hasta el 1959. Mi Cuba bella esa musica te llega al alma. Escucharla me hace feliz.En este disco tengo de Gonzalo Roig Quiéreme mucho” Canto del Esclavo” con Ramon Calzadilla” Aves y Flores, de la zarzuela la hija del Sol, Canta Ana Menendez una soprano con ezquisita voz. Es mi vida su querer, Romanza Aldo Lario. y en la otra cara. la zarzuela “Cecilia Valdez. con Ana Menéndez. Romanza Dulce Quimera con Armando Pico. Lloro aun al Recordarte, Esther Borja. Nunca Te lo Dire con Calzadilla. y Cancion de Azucena de la Zarzuela El Clarin canta Ana Menéndez, cuantas cosas perdimos al llegar el 1959 si pudieramos reproducer todo lo que perdimos. casi yres generaciones que no conocen a la Cuba de sus antepasados y que la perdieron.
The title of this slides-recording state that it is a "complete operetta." It was my disappointment, however, to find out that "Contradanza" is cut here in half and only music of its beginning is included in this recording (no variations, no trio and no recapitulation). Perhaps original historical recording does not contain it from lack of space. In that case it should not be claimed as "complete." Anyway, thanks for nice old photos of locality and description of an action!

Yes, I do not Know why the recording is missing those but this is as complete as I have of a recording with Marta Perez. It could be for the reasons you state but also many of these recordings were gathered from different studios and radio stations second hand from other countries after 1959 when the Cuban government closed Cuba's frontiers and nothing could come in or out of Cuba and re-issued outside of that country from whatever was available. Perhaps there is a truly complete recording of the album somewhere in the record studio's archives in Havana but as many of these artists became exiled they were forbidden to be played publicly or anything done with their recordings until recently. The original recording was issued by Panart Records in the and Cuban Plastics corporation in the early 1950's, I have a copy of it but It think is the same as this one, I'll make some inquiries about the original recording.
The character's last name is Valdés, not Váldez.
