One of my ancestors, a Solomon Slusser and one of his cousins, died while digging a well in the late 1870's. "They had dug down to approx 50 feet and hit bedrock. Dynamite was tossed down the well and burning straw was thrown into the well to light the fuse but it did not. Waiting until the next day, the two men were lowered into the hole and, after taking off the ropes from their waists, were soon overcome with the "black-damp". A third man was then lowered into the hole and was overcome but he was rescued because he was still attached to the rope. The bodies were recovered with grappling hooks and the well was filled in and another one was dug nearby". This is an excerpt from a newspaper article about the two deaths that is included in an extensive genealogy file compiled by one of my brothers and a cousin that goes back to our 6th great-grandfather coming over from Germany in 1767. It's hard to fathom just what these people had to do just to survive.
You guys could make a commentary, describing slow drying paint, sound interesting and entertaining. I've watched people who've made dozens of magnet fishing videos without the production values and context/narrative you managed in your first one. Somehow the lack of finds was irrelevant, given the fun you were clearly having.
Thanks, enjoyed your day. Do no give it up, goofing off with a 500 lb pull magnet, harvested 2 tackle boxes, expensive salt water lures and 2 heavy duty Penn reels. About 375.00 in value. Never could find original owner so enjoyed then personally. Keep having fun, enjoy ALL your videos. Merry Christmas
I have never seen this before but I am excited. I live on a lake with a rich history. I am going to get out the paddle boat, set my loyal companion Bella ( a seven pound chihuahua who looks strangely like a wolf) beside me and drag the magnet along. Let's see what treasures we find!
Magnets are so helpful! Once my brother dropped his Ka-Bar knife into a deep, dark pool in a cave. It was freezing cold, and we weren’t about to dive in to fetch it up. So after ordering a neodymium magnet off eBay, we went back to the cave after several weeks. I put the magnet in an old sock tied to a rope. Amazingly, I managed to fish out the knife first try. The knife had a slight rust to the edge, but cleaned up as good as new. All hail the magnet!
I love being able to see right down those old wells. Thankyou for the rare chance to do that. That is a beautifull area. I did admire the lovely green moss too.
Clues to the missing horse? The horse shoe nail at the bottom of the well. Then the divining rod they used to locate where to dig the well! Awesome finds! Looking forward to the next one.
I’ve always been impressed with the craftsmanship of well diggers. Amazing! Dangerous work but so necessary in those days. It would have been cool if you guys could have taken a water sample to see how pure the water was. Very entertaining Brad.
after helping extinguish a prairie fire in north texas, my brother was missing, however his wife could hear a distant cow bellowing frantically.she found him way down in a forgotten well, up to his neck in water precariously balanced on something or other down there. after locating him his wife did a little bellowing of her own, and the local paradise, texas fire dept stopped rolling up their hoses and tossed one down the well after him. the hole was full of black widows but he didn't get bitten.
As kids in Vergennes ('60s) my friends and I regularly found musket/cannon balls, nails and arrow heads digging in the dirt along the banks. Since there was a shipyard there (a fleet was built that was used in the 1812 War), that could be a really interesting place to try magnet fishing.
Thanks for the video; it brought back some really good memories. I got my first jackknife as a 6-year-old kid from going magnet-fishing with my dad and big brother in my native Panama City FL, off the old Hathaway Bridge; my dad had some sort of huge, thick horseshoe-shaped magnet that must've weighed at least 7 or 8 pounds-- it was a monster that required a heavy rope, and later on it featured in many school science-fair displays. ^_^ That jackknife (it was a Case knife with a bone handle) came up along with the rest of the contents of some poor fisherman's metal toolbox-- lots of rusty fish-hooks, some good lures, a tin full of weights, and the toolbox itself; not a bad haul. Man, I had that knife for YEARS. My dad believed in teaching his kids to fish and clean fish, and it didn't matter to him if we were boys or girls. Smart man; if we could clean them, that way he didn't have to do it!
Brad, you & Chris are comedic geniuses. Both of you kept me in stitches almost the entire video. Tough luck on finding anything in the wells, but it would be neat if that when the weather warms up come spring or summer, watching you try magnet fishing off of old bridges in out of the way places where there isn't much modern travel.
Hey Brad! I'm from south eastern VA. close to the Great Dismal Swamp where biting deer flies and, mosquitoes are an absolute nightmare. My brother told me to take a Bounce dryer sheet (or several) and rub them all over my clothes and exposed skin to repel those nasty things. It actually works! They don't like the smell and, won't bite. It's a God send! Once you've rubbed down with them, put the used sheets in your pockets or wherever you can. They still have some scent on them. YOUR WELCOME! 😁
I have been in many wells, most of them dry, lol. Although the ones with water too deep, you need a tool. I used an extendable pool skimmer handle with a beefed up net (wide and thin). You have to use a strong material for the netting because of snags and such. The Best wells in my experience came from larger estates and businesses. Old Hostels, Saloons, and any other Grand buildings. Good luck, I know there has to be something of the sort in your area. Take my advise, if you do venture into a well, draw up a contract with the owner for the ability to be able to keep the contents, if any, when found. I learned this lesson the hard way about 20 years ago. Found gold coins and owner refused to allow me to keep one. I found 7.
I enjoy watching your videos...and as an Ancient Mariner, it is correctly called a Line until the diameter exceeds 1inch. It then becomes a Rope. You share so much information to the point that nomenclature matters. Keep up the fun adventures.
As per the usual, excellent music created by ours’ truly Brad Martin and his really cool Shotgun Mics. My go to for motivational tracks! Great vid too 😁
Hi Brad & Chris, a very absorbing and addictive hobby, you should drag it around by some waterfalls and in the streams there. Thank you for sharing, much love. xx💖🤘
The waterproof camera suspended by a rope idea worked out great. I have seen underwater fish cameras for sale, maybe you could attach the magnet to a fish camera and see what is underwater live.
I have a lot of fun watching your adventures. I went to Norwich University in VT and once owned 40 acres on Stanard Mt. up in the NE Kingdom. Miss it and wish you well.
Very cool! I used to work in the Caribbean as a diver, one of my hobbies was exploring the old sugar plantations near the base. I found shackles, keys, part of a flintlock. broken tools and the ever popular pipes.. Your colonial wells seem to be much narrower then the ones id physically rap down into them.
i wish i lived closer to you guys. ya seem like fun guys i could run with... been detecting for quite a while now and i do love the hobby very much.. im pretty remote here and dont have friends who are interested in detecting.. a few have tried it but didnt find handfulls of gold dabloons and silver ingots, so they never go back.. lol.. for me its not about piles of treasure, its just fascinating to me to , oh i dont know find an old skelly key or watch winder. i always wonder who lost it and how.. just never gets old.
When you enjoy yourself, we enjoy the video. You are to carry that magnet with you come springtime and summer in case you do run across old Wells you can check them at the time. I know it adds weight to your pack. But it may be worth. Great video. Have a fantastic Christmas you and your family Chris's also. Take care and stay safe. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Loved it even though not much was found. Loved the colonial art. 😊. Just beautiful how clear the water still is! Looking forward to upcoming videos. Merry Christmas to you and your family Brad!! Merry Christmas Chris!!
You two gave it a good go 👍 I just can't imagine very much metal being dropped into those wells. It was fun watching you both have a good time with your magnet fishing attempts 👍☺
magnet fishing works better in river and channels. Also watch that here on youtube. But, you guys are still fun to watch. And talk more about what your doing.
Well guys, love ya, love the music, love the metal detecting videos and.......I've had some EPIC FAILS in my magnet fishing adventures- as a matter of fact, I just title my magnet fishing videos just that; EPIC FAILS. You guys in no way failed (you didn't lose 3 magnets and lock yourselves out of your car for 5 hours), but...well...Better Luck Next Time!!! Take Care. Rob / Flthunder
Old wells usually got filled in with rocks. U will have to dig them up to find anything or go around them maybe they dropped stuff goin to and from the wells.
Great new adventure! Maybe consider revisiting a lake you featured awhile ago. The village that was submerged could really yield up interesting relics!
That was awesome! Yeah I've done some Colonial wells and there really is not much to be found. That being said, there is always going to be something great in a few of them.
that water looked so good. so happy to have well water. nothing tastes as good. imagine especially in colonial times when water in the cities and rivers were polluted how valuable a resource as potable water was.
If this video finds something(haven't watched yet) it will be the first one I've seen that does find treasure. Normaly just get iron or bucket fragments.
Magnet Fishing reminds me of "The Curse Of Oak Island", a lot of anticipation a few small results and much speculation. Don't take me wrong, I love the idea, but the results are generally anticlimactic a tempest in a teapot. This is Oak Island I'm talking about, not you guys...your interactions are awesome and actually you've found more silver and gold and historical stuff than they have in what seven or eight seasons and no one has to die to find the De Grau treasure:) Cheers, Rik Spector

Deaths in digging wells were surprisingly common.
Wowx
What is the “black-damp”, if you don’t mind me asking?
They couldn’t have lowered a rope to pull the guys out to begin with?
@@laurenlongfellow9714 All that I know of the incident is a newspaper article that accounted the detail of a local tragedy.

Yep lol
Interesting spelling of your last name Paul if you don't mind what's the origin?

What's more fun than a couple of complete characters magnet fishing colonial wells in Vermont. I have been a fan for years. Best one yet!
I have never seen this before but I am excited. I live on a lake with a rich history. I am going to get out the paddle boat, set my loyal companion Bella ( a seven pound chihuahua who looks strangely like a wolf) beside me and drag the magnet along. Let's see what treasures we find!

"Well" that looked like fun!
The medal rod was a delth checker!they either dropped it,and tried to get it back and bent it, or waded it up in disgust after that well went dry
I love being able to see right down those old wells. Thankyou for the rare chance to do that. That is a beautifull area. I did admire the lovely green moss too.
When I was a kid (age 12 +/-) I magnet fished the colonial well in my front yard. Recovered 3 Victorian era window weights and a rusted out paint can.
Clues to the missing horse? The horse shoe nail at the bottom of the well. Then the divining rod they used to locate where to dig the well! Awesome finds! Looking forward to the next one.

Sometimes it is not what you find, it's the adventure of trying. Keep up the awesome videos!
Taking the lighted pictures was a great idea!
Great show! Nice to see your buddy too! Happy Treasure Hunting❤️
Thank you for the adventure and laughs ! Take care , stay safe and healthy with whatever you guys maybe doing next ! Doing well here in Kansas .

Looking forward to more magnet fishing videos!
Very entertaining guys!!!! Keep searching and stay safe
Lots of fun. Thank you.

I don’t get magnet fishing. One finds things that one normally tries to discriminate. But you managed to make a nice movie doing it 👍
As per the usual, excellent music created by ours’ truly Brad Martin and his really cool Shotgun Mics. My go to for motivational tracks!

Go to some of your lakes with the magnet. I find all kinds of things with mine.
Magnet fishing I’ve never found anything doing it. At least you gave it a try mate. Nice areas you hunt in.
A well that is that old probably has three feet of dirt at the bottom.
Yay! GMMD Friday!
You guys are the best! Keep up the great videos!
So cool. Great video! Never stop 🙂🙂🙂👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🎄🎄🎄
Awesome never thought to try that

I've never watched a magnet fishing video where someone found cool things but it still looks like so much fun.
I have seen a few different people find guns. I even seen one where they pulled up live grenades and the bomb squad was called..
JUST LOVE YOUR WAY START.
Great Job! Guys
Y'all are funny!! enjoyed the video..ty for sharing
Finally, A magnet fishing video without annoying RUclipsrs
Your music is great.
You can use the magnet in rivers it is amazing what you can find.
When you enjoy yourself, we enjoy the video. You are to carry that magnet with you come springtime and summer in case you do run across old Wells you can check them at the time. Very cool fellas I laughed my butt off that's the most fun I've had in a while thank you 🙂🙂
NORTH GEORGIA MIKEY
Wow how cool.is that.awell with a lid.we in UK don't have anything like that thankyou god blessx
Love the adventures of magnet fishing. You guys had me laughing. ;D Hurts after brain surgery Friday.
You can take the top half of a soda bottle and glue it to the top of the magnet like a dome to help keep it from catching on tree limbs and rocks.
I'd recommend trying the magnet fishing in old quarry pools and ponds/lakes near old residences.
That swimming hole that you metal detected, Brad!!
Looks like a nice stretcher
Loved it even though not much was found. Loved the colonial art. 😊. Just beautiful how clear the water still is! Looking forward to upcoming videos. Merry Christmas to you and your family Brad!! Merry Christmas Chris!!
It would be great to see you magnet fish in the beautiful lake you were on one summer in a previous video... a while ago.
Your added music in the background is great! Just like all your adventures!;)
You two gave it a good go 👍 I just can't imagine very much metal being dropped into those wells. It was fun watching you both have a good time with your magnet fishing attempts 👍☺

Good adventures and think wire was for retreating things that fell in the well.
This was a fun one to watch! Can’t wait til next year when you do it again!
Love to watch you Brad .climbing around them there hill ..very entertaining ! From an Australian fan !
Leave it to you to have unique ideas like this!! This was really cool!!
Merry Christmas an happy New year
Good job 👌 it was worth a try anyways. Thanks for getting us out and about! Maybe next time you find the treasure!!!!
Loved the video great job
Well! You guys did really well fishing those wells.
Oh yeah- rubber gloves are a must when pulling up the wet rope. Thanks for the video.

I truly enjoy you guys, having fun and exploring. The deep well reminds me of the water wholes in the Caverns. Cool 😎
I had fun watching you guys! Merry Christmas 🎄💗
I live by the Erie Canal in upstate ny. Just bought a magnet, as soon as the ice melts it’s going in the canal. Lol I can’t wait
Hi from England xx
Great video guys!
Don't feel bad I've magnet fished a few Wells never found nothing in any of them you get an A for effort
At 17:34, I'm guessing that Chris's mystery metal wire is actually a rare colonial divining rod!
Old wells usually got filled in with rocks. U will have to dig them up to find anything or go around them maybe they dropped stuff goin to and from the wells.
When you put the camera down the 1st well it looked partially blocked by a fallen flat stone. Looked like at the small opening it may have gone deeper
Chris caught a leaf? Must have been from an ironwood tree. 😁
Awesome video !!!
THIS is why De Grault hid his gold in a well !
Lol you cant magnet fish for gold.
Old gun or treasure
Yukon Cornelius says “nothin”. Seasonal humor🤣
Great new adventure!

That big piece of iron used to be a hanger for Squatch! Haha
Might try some of the flooded quarries?
