I think that younger generations have definitely lost the taste for dissonance or irony in art. "This ain't no party, this ain't no disco..." to that groove is obviously the artist intentionally creating a dissonance but it just goes over younger listeners' heads.
@@imdabigdilfdondodah5689 the dissonance is the lyrics bounced off of the up-tempo groove. I mean "heard of some grave sites out by the highway" doesn't really match the feel of the music.
David Byrne developed the entire staging concept for this show. The film this is from -- Stop Making Sense -- is considered one of the best concert films of all time. It was directed by one of America's best directors, Jonathan Demme. You owe it to yourself to see the entire thing in one sitting (preferably on a large screen with a good sound system so you can dance along).
I also loved the fact that it was at The Pantages, a (relatively) small venue. It’s almost like the entire gig is a series of clues, leading the viewer through a story. It’s a masterpiece of production.
I saw it multiple times when it first came out in theaters, own a copy of vhs, dvd and bluray i regret not to have been there at pantages to watch it live since i lived in the area (l.a.).
Although not a concert film, 'True Stories' was also an excellent quirky film featuring songs from the album with the same name, and showcasing the genius of David Byrne.
Tina Weymouth is perhaps the most underrated bassist of all the '80s bands. She lays down a solid pattern on virtually every one of the Talking Heads' songs.

Stop Making Sense is best live concert movie hands down!!!! You should watch from beginning to end...its done so creatively...if you take another song from this I recommend Crosseyed and Painless
You have to be in excellent cardio vascular shape to be in David's band(s) lol. He's the kind of guy, as an ex-art student, that treated his band and every song as an art project. The track is seemingly about some sort of nondescript dystopian time of civil unrest. He never really clarified it that I've seen, but certainly no time for fun or distraction other than aerobics, apparently. Brilliant band! 🔥
I thought I heard somewhere that the song was supposed to be sung from the point of view of a terrorist but more about how their day-to-day life was. Like a typical day in the life of a terrorist.
It was inspired by stories of the French Resistance in WWII, the darkness of the lyrics (which few people actually listen to or comment on) contrasts with the funky high energy of the music.
Great song! Great concert! Such an unique band. They are in my top 5. But you need to let them grow on you for their quirkiness to not be distracting. They are truly Funky and Nerdy. Perfect mix.
If you want other songs from them and this concert they are all great. But I recommend Slippery people and Girl Friend is Better (For funky big suit awesomeness.)
Talking Heads are(were) an eccentric band with a VERY eccentric lead singer. The quirky movements and odd behaviour is part of the package that made them stand out and unique in a time when we were bombarded by great bands in concert and radio. They certainly carved their own unique niche into the musical tapestry of the 80's and, so happens, one of my favorite bands from that era in the genre.
Brad&Lex, you'll love their "Crosseyed And Painless", “And She Was” and "Cities"!!! edit- they mentioned The Mudd Club and CBGB. These were famed NYC venues for underground/punk rock/new wave bands, where they played.
The keyboardist in this is the late great Bernie Worrell formerly of Parliament Funkadellic one of the creators of the 70s funk movement. This entire concert is amazing it starts with just Byrne and an acoustic guitar and builds with the addition of an instrument with each track, super high energy awesomeness.
@@BulldogMack700rs he is one of the guitarist for the band. On all their studio albums both him and Byrne are listed as guitarist. But Harrison is listed on all albums as the only person on keyboards to include piano, organ and synthesiser. He was also the keyboard player for the Modern lovers. @@BulldogMack700rs you said he was the bands guitarists. Which would mean for everything they do. Not just for this track. If you were talking only about this track you should have specified that. But on this track he is on keyboard not guitar.
I think the song is about how now people can't enjoy anything because they do so much just to survive. You know "This ain't no party/ This ain't no disco /This ain't no fooling around". Everything is serious
This song is a classic, as is the performance (from the documentary "Stop Making Sense"). Next, from the same concert, you should do "Girlfriend is Better." "Slippery People" is also a super catchy tune.
I went to this tour "Stop making sense" it was incredible they are so diverse and unusual with so much energy...one of the best concerts I've seen...loved your reactions!! Welcome to the talking heads❤❤

LMFAO. Brad looked absolutely alarmed watching that. Back in the day, I used to watch Stop Making Sense while on the elliptical. Figured if I could keep up with David Byrne, I was in great shape. I saw this concert film in a movie theater, and walked out a dedicated Head head.
Imagine how exhausted you would be after one of those concerts. I saw them at an old stadium, and they had to come out to tell us to stop jumping up and down because the whole balcony was starting to sway, and they were worried it would collapse! And yes, he does just start to run all the way around the stage
Great song from what is said to be one of the greatest live concert films ever. It's so neat to watch how it builds from start to end. Wish I'd had the chance to see them live.
This concert is one of my favorites. The song “Slippery People” from this concert is really good. (Mavis Staples even did a cover of the song!) When you get back to them it’s worth taking a look. I’d recommend watching the whole concert. It’s called “Stop Making Sense.” I’ve watched at least 30+ times. It just makes you feel good. It starts out with one person for the first song, two for the second, and keeps adding on and getting crazier.
I was lucky enough to see Talking Heads on this tour back in '83. It was amazing. An entire arena up and dancing the whole time. The Stop Making Sense movie captures it perfectly.
Everyone focuses on the lead singer, but let's give credit where it's due to the entire band. They all collaborated to write the music and create these incredible performances. As far as I'm concerned, Tina, Jerry, and Chris were geniuses just as much as Dave.
The frenetic movements on stage go well with the lyrics. The lyrics are great, so many memorable lines. I can't say why, but I love "I got some groceries, some peanut butter, to last a couple of days / Ain't got no speakers, ain't got no headphones, ain't got no records to play". It's an assessment of how long he can hold out in his "Life During Wartime".
and the lyrics are about life during a certain kind of wartime. He is underground. changing his appearance. Communicating clandestinely. Saving up peanut butter to live a couple of days.
We have not had any major warfare in our country since 1865. We don’t know what that’s really like. David Byrne was trying to imagine living in NYC during a war. Taking a side, being committed. To offset the heavy lyric content, the band wrote this iconic party/dance music. And the stagecraft and showmanship raise it all to true art. Fun, absurdist, and deeply troubling all at once. Think of Ukraine…a lot of people a lot like us are living through this.

I once read Bruce Springsteen runs six miles every morning to stay in shape for his shows. I'm guessing David Byrne does an Ironman competition a couple of times per week to perform like this.
About 5 years ago, I was sitting at my desk, at work, and I blurted out a couple of lines from this song. And when I stopped, the 19 year old intern to my left, picked up the next 2 lines. I turned and looked at him and asked "How do you know this song." He replied "My dad plays Talking Heads a lot. I love classic rock." Yeah it was like getting stabbed in the heart when he referred to it as Classic Rock. But I do love when the younger generation enjoys the music I grew up with. And it doesn't sting anymore, when those bands are called classic.

Such a great live performance. At their performing peak. They were a very theatrical band, not a rock and roll band. Came out of the art school college scene.
One of the greatest bands ever but they just are so odd when you first encounter them. David Byrne has such a sense of humor. The fans already knew this song because it was a big radio hit not just on alternative radio but it crossed over to rock and other stuff and it had come out on an earlier album a couple years before, and that whole album is incredible, but life during wartime as a song, starts off that entire album, and the name of the album is, fear of music. So everybody already knew it and a lot of their songs although there was a good deal of newer stuff for this huge concert extravaganza/ movie. So it was just fantastic to watch this huge stage performance of a song that we already knew and loved.
Great band, and David Byrne continues to be energetic and quirky at 70. I saw one of the first dates of his 2018 tour (which I believe is still ongoing) in Buffalo and then again a few months later in Toronto, and it was incredible. A dozen musicians and dancers at least to support him, and they were all wireless and doing incredibly choreographed movements. About half the setlist was Talking Heads songs and the other half was more recent solo material. It was an excellent show and everybody in the theatre was on their feet by the second song.
About the meaning of the song, my take is that it is a spoof of all the clichés found in war/spy/action movies. The band running all through the performance underlines how these movies focus more on keeping the action going rather than trying to develop the plot and the characters. Each single verse could be a quote from a screenplay, and the fact that they don't seem to fit together to build a sensible story is again a comment on how the plot of action movies is often only a pretext to introduce a sequence of fights, high speed chases, explosions and such. BTW, love your channel.
Amazing band, and can you even imagine how fit you have to be to be in Talking Heads? Totally serious song Brad, very clever lyrics(as usual) worth a read through,😉
They met while students at Rhode Island Institute of Fashion. What you were watching is one of the greatest concert films of all time STOP MAKING SENSE (1984) directed by Jonathan Demme. The film truly shows the bands greatness musically, visually and demonstrates their importance in the creation of the new wave genre.
The band's keyboardist, Jerry Harrison, played in the Modern Lovers in the early 70s (with genius frontman Jonathan Richman and drummer David Robinson, who went on to fame with the Cars).
From their Stop Making Sense stage show. Saw it a 3 day rock festival in Sydney Australia Jan 1984. Was mesmerized by the whole thing. They released a film of the Stage Show later that year, filmed by Jonathon Demme in Dec 1983 in LA. Band consisted of guys like Bernie Worrell, the keyboardist from James Brown, the black guitarist is a cousin of the Brothers Johnson , the back up singers were phenomenal. Everything was choreographed to minute detail and David Byrne was into theatrics therefore the weird dancing. Do yourself a favour and stream Stop Making Sense. It will ALL make sense then :)
The two background singers and dancers elevate the energy of this track to super high levels. It’s pretty rare to see that much pure joy. Also remember the competing live acts at this time, Rick James, Prince/The Time This show definitely is not an isolated thing. Incredible time for music
The Talking Heads movie called "Stop Making Sense" was just like this. He's like a marathon runner that never gets tired. If I remember this clip may be from that 1984 movie. Loved it & saw it several times.
I watched that dude with out the heads, with his own band live on PBS a while ago...and I had no idea how much performance I was I going to witness. At one point he was wearing a unitard musculature outfit. 😂 so weird ❤ oh right, he is the talking part of the heads.
David Byrne is on the semi-short list of musicians who are truly geniuses. Watch the whole concert film 'Stop Making Sense'. Groundbreaking. Edit: Tina Weymouth forever ♥️ My gawd.

[Verse 1]
Heard of a van that is loaded with weapons
Packed up and ready to go
Heard of some gravesites out by the highway
A place where nobody knows
The sound of gunfire off in the distance
I'm getting used to it now
Lived in a brownstone, lived in the ghetto
I've lived all over this town

This ain't no fooling around
No time for dancing, or lovey-dovey
I ain't got time for that now

Transmit the message, to the receiver
Hope for an answer some day
I got three passports, a couple of visas
You don't even know my real name
High on a hillside, the trucks are loading
Everything's ready to roll
I sleep in the daytime and I work in the nighttime
I might not ever get home
[Chorus 2]
This ain't no party, this ain't no disco
This ain't no fooling around
This ain't no Mudd Club, or C.B.G.B
I ain't got time for that now
[Verse 3]
Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit?
Heard about Pittsburgh, P. A.?
You oughta know not to stand by the window
Somebody'll see you up there
I got some groceries, some peanut butter
To last a couple of days
But I ain't got no speakers, ain't got no headphones
Ain't got no records to play
[Bridge]
Why stay in college? Why go to night school?
Gonna be different this time
Can't write a letter, can't send no postcard
I ain't got time for that now
[Outro]
Trouble in transit, got through the roadblock
We blended in with the crowd
We got computers, we're tapping phone lines
I know that that ain't allowed
We dress like students, we dress like housewives
Or in a suit and a tie
I changed my hairstyle so many times now
I don't know what I look like
You make me shiver, I feel so tender
We make a pretty good team
Don't get exhausted, I'll do some driving
You ought to get you some sleep
Burned all my notebooks, what good are notebooks?
They won't help me survive
My chest is aching, burns like a furnace
The burning keeps me alive

Wha Wha pedal on the keyboard. Great observation,as usual Lex!
This is one of my favorite scenes from "Stop Making Sense"... just try to do all of that aerobic movement and still sing in key without gasping.
Has to go down as one of the best live performances.
Talking Heads always put on a great show.
Wonderful! Your distain was delightful... very common reaction to talking heads...
David Byrne is 70 now and STILL does this!! Love, love, love. 👍❤🤙
WILD WILD LIFE!
Lol “so odd” is probably the best bin to put their records in
Great band, and David Byrne continues to be energetic and quirky at 70.
After wartime, it might be cool to run into david byrne in a disco just to fooling around.
Amazing band, and can you even imagine how fit you have to be to be in Talking Heads? Totally serious song Brad, very clever lyrics(as usual) worth a read through,😉
You must watch this whole concert film!!! It is one of the best I've ever seen and the music is phenomenal!! David Byrne is a genius!!
@Best of it. The version of Burning down the house from this album / concert is much better than the version that got all the radio and MTV play time.
The band's keyboardist, Jerry Harrison, played in the Modern Lovers in the early 70s (with genius frontman Jonathan Richman and drummer David Robinson, who went on to fame with the Cars).
Yup, RISD
At an SDCC I saw four Navy Seals jogging in cadence to the studio version of this song. Which you might also consider giving a listen to on your own.
I saw that tour in Dallas !!
Also remember the competing live acts at this time,
Rick James,
Prince/The Time
This show definitely is not an isolated thing.
Incredible time for music
Have you done DeVo yet?
You should get into devo
The Talking Heads movie called "Stop Making Sense" was just like this. He's like a marathon runner that never gets tired. If I remember this clip may be from that 1984 movie. Loved it & saw it several times.
I watched that dude with out the heads, with his own band live on PBS a while ago...and I had no idea how much performance I was I going to witness. At one point he was wearing a unitard musculature outfit. 😂 so weird ❤ oh right, he is the talking part of the heads.
David Byrne is a genius!
David Byrne is on the semi-short list of musicians who are truly geniuses. Watch the whole concert film 'Stop Making Sense'. Groundbreaking.
Edit: Tina Weymouth forever ♥️ My gawd.
One the greatest tracks ever!!
It's about life during war time and how other stuff is no longer important!
Tina is one the best bass players also! The Heads are AMAZEBALLS!!!!
