CAT 3306 D7G cold rough start -20

Starting “cranky larry” my 1984 cat d7g after sitting 12 days in -20 degrees. The first 10 seconds or so is with no throttle building oil pressure before giving it fuel. This particular 3306 model did not have glow plugs like the earlier ones did but it does have the optional ether aid however no ether was used as the can was empty and I forgot my spray can.

I run a d6c with same engine, it a manual transmission and is way more interesting to run then new joysticks stuff

She's just a bit cranky this cold morning. This is part of the reason so many older diesels had piny motors to start them. Battery technology was really bad back then.

I assume that is a late model 3306 direct injection with no glow plugs. The diesel knock it had when running. Is good practice to cycle hydraulics a bit and transmission to ensure pumps are primed. As not to burn out the pumps. Anyways nice old iron.

They don’t have preheat they have a ether starting fluid system but the bottle was empty. Explained in description.

Preheat is when you crank the engine over to make heat in those cylinders and hold it for a few seconds. Crank it up again and repeat until you see smoke. Where there's smoke, there fire. Fire which is heat a cold diesels best friend. A battery charger will get you father then a can of summer air. You could dry seize that deal.
