Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. The song, In Too Deep, is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight, Land of Confusion, and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.
I just read all of that in Walter whites voice as he talks to Gus Fring in Patrick Batemans apartment HAHAHAHA

When a middle age guy wearing the gray suit is the big pop star, you know it is about music and quality. 80's and 90's were so great times for music.
I was a kid in the 80s and me and all of my friends thought that this kind of horrific stuff was the death of pop music. And just look at Collins. Compare him to James Brown or 1968 Elvis or 1967 Morrison or 1975 Bowie to see how he had the 'style' of a suburban bank clerk and the performance capability and presence of a slug.
@@blackmore4 You see that's the problem with music, everyone thinks it's their God given right to tell others what's good and what isn't. It's all subjective, and that's your opinion so crack on, however his many fans will disagree.
@@MrMaddy70 But... with Phil flipping Collins... you _need_ telling. 😆

True! I m from Belgium
Your belief is REAL! 😜
Collins wrote “Sussudio” the way he wrote a lot of his songs by playing around with a drum machine, coming up with an idea, and then writing to that idea. In this case, Collins was improvising, coming up with melodic ideas by singing nonsense words over his own beat. This is also how a lot of rappers write these days. Collins came up with the “Sussudio” hook, thinking he’d later go back and replace that non-word with something that meant something. But he couldn’t think of anything else that fit the track as well, so he kept the gibberish, and he worked around it.
..haha its funny but on macedonian language Sudio means Judge....what a hit it was when we were kids,
No, he mostly came up with it by listening (and slightly copying) the song "1999" by Prince. He admitted to listening to the song a lot in the studio while he was writing "Sussudio"
ruclips.net/video/rblt2EtFfC4/видео.html&ab_channel=Prince
No he wrote this song after he heard Princes 1999. Its the exact same tempo and a sure fire rip off, so stop acting like Collins was so original and some precussor to rap or r n b
@@massagemodality366 🤣

I am a semi professional music producer, and Phil Collins totally pioneered two things, in my personal opinion:
1) Voice filters and echo
2) Beat compression
I know he wasn't the first to do these things, but he WAS one of the first to actually put it on the map. Look how far those two aspects have come over the years.... I believe he is a HUGE reason behind it!
This song specifically, listen to it on a killer sound system. It sounds and feels like a literal vacuum, with all of its compression!

That's why modern music is increasingly crappy and bland, the label executives can only have lyrics and artist's styling and behaviors conform to whatever market research and focus group data recommends, so we get artist after artist after artist molded from the same template again and again, can anyone really tell apart James Blunt from John Mayer from Ben Folds Five? Is there really much difference from Nikki Minaj to Cardi B and Ciara? What sets apart Galantis from Chainsmokers from Swedish House Mafia?
See what I mean?

Can you believe when Peter Gabriel left Genesis they auditioned like 30 singers before Phil stepped out from behind the drums and said let me give it a go. He nailed the sound they wanted and the rest is history. He may never have taken that step if they hadn't struggled finding a replacement.
