I’ve watched this a minimum of 150 times now
15:47 - some nice Mixolydian mode playing by Mr Anastasio. As a fan of prog metal and 'shredders' and fusion players, have to say Trey's playing is very tasteful, I can see why the band is popular, first time listening to Phish.
Daniel Verberne you gotta go to a show. There’s nothing like it
This was a great place to start! Welcome phriend.
Keep exploring, im sure youll find more you enjoy. Come to a show sometime, youd love it
Mix is his go to! Glad you enjoy! I too am a PROG junkie :D but seen Phish a couple dozen times! Have to see them live :D
If your down with Trey, check out this other band...GOOSE
Jesus this is absolutely phenomenal. What energy. What music. What a night.
After watching this for probably the 15th time and still trying to comprehend how I was there, on the floor, I firmly believe this was one of the most fun nights I have ever experienced.
My very first show, so I'm inclined to agree. Still can't believe how lucky I got.
Thank you, Phish. I believe in what you do. There is no greater band, no greater art, no greater feeling than this.
Rob d
yes
Yup !
At 16:40, watch Page look at Trey realizing that he is absolutely killing it.
Nice choice of a point of absolute bliss. So interesting to watch the detail of the audience having to respond to what they are hearing but not being practiced in the art. So much fun. Love watching the efforts of everyday people trying to express themselves on a transcendent level. The best.
The crowds reaction also affirms that everyone knew Trey was killing it.
This was the best Phish show I've ever been to and probably the best concert I've ever been to.
The first set was excellent... especially the Wolfman's Brother to close it out. It felt like there was serious potential for this to turn into a very special show during set break. One of those breaks where everyone is just grinning ear to ear and high fiving each other and shaking their heads in awe of what they heard.
And then the second set happened. There are few feelings quite like hearing the Carini riff at the start of a second set. Immediately sets the tone and revives the momentum from the end of the first set. But then this Tweezer happened. I remember it so vividly. I turned to my friends somewhere around the 12 or 13 minute mark and said "doesn't this sound like I Know You Rider?". None of them heard what I heard, but I kept dancing and playing the lyrics to the Rider chorus in my head. Following the show, I was glad to see I wasn't alone in hearing that theme teased throughout the jam.
I was already dancing my ass off, fully invested in this jam, by like 15:30. I was in my happy place. And then the energy kept building. And building. At the 16:42 mark, you could feel the tide start to shift from "this is a really good Tweezer" to "this is a fucking amazing Tweezer". And over the next 5, 10, 15, 20 seconds, everyone in the arena had made that transition. By 17:05, it was just pure bliss in every direction. Everyone was dancing. Everyone was smiling. Everyone was giving each other that "holy shit" look, but not saying "holy shit" because we were all too mesmerized by the jam to form words.
I will forever be grateful to have been in the building that night and to have witnessed this monster Tweezer. And I'm also grateful that there's a high quality, professionally produced video of this, because watching it genuinely transports me back to MSG on 12/29/18 and gives me the opportunity to relive one of the best live music experiences I've ever had.
I turned to my friend during the Death Don't Hurt Very Long jam at the Kasvot Vaxt Halloween show in Vegas and said: "Mark my words, Tweezer > Death Don't Hurt Very Long at MSG over the NYE Run" and sure enough, BOOM! I was in Israel with my family so I missed it, but that combo just had to surface. Glad for everyone that was there to see it.
One of the best tweezer transitions I've heard
LMAO Fishman at 24:00 cracks me up every time!!! Bob Weaver!!!
Dan
fish is the soul of the band imo. Great energy and vibes swirling around that one.
Unbobweavable
THIS SHOW CHANGED MAH LYFE!!!
Macallan Atkins as a 12 year old this show is my favorite of all time
id give anything to have been smart enough to have been into this at twelve @@toshey1214
I had such a good time at this show. Twinges of Allman Bros and GD's I know you, rider. but the First Tube afterwards was EVERYTHING! THAT SECOND SET BLAZED! The 'No Quarter" was Epic!
Cold chills at 16:40. Nice run so far. Tonight's gonna be 🔥
When you hear the roar of the crowd, at the moment when everything comes together in a jam, and Trey is absolutely wringing every last note out of his guitar I never fail to get literal goosebumps.
It’s the drug that’s kept me coming back to this band for 25 years, and it’s a hallmark of all my favorite live recordings.
The peak of 12/31/93 Reba when the crowd and band are all on the same page and you hear the roar is absolute magic.
incredible piece of improv, thx fish for the timeless jams, 18:00 minute mark brings the tears. u guys are the best.
The entire 2nd set was fire!
I actually called MSG Lost & Found the next day and asked if they found my face that melted off during this Tweezer.
What a fucking night!!!!!!!
See you in Camden!
One of two Phish shows that changed my life
The other 12/30/17
But wait.. am I the only person who heard The Doors in there? - - - AND.... Death Don't Have No Mercy this night! Some of the best soul feeding music I've ever heard. Thank you.
Nope, I totally hear some LA Woman teases from Paige and Trey!
The greatest band on Earth wrapping up one of the greatest years they’ve had in years!!
Amen
Jack Minor it was no 2015
@Tara Chew very debatable
They've consistently improved as a synchronized unit throughout all of 3.0 and whether you like the new stylistic changes or not the fact is that as individual musicians they play less wrong notes now than they ever have before.
I love to see Fish has gone back to his pre2016 cymbal setup; Sabian AA 21” Ride, Sabian AA 16” Thin Crash, Zildjian K Crash, Sabian 8” Splash, his vintage Zildjian K Pang, and the best sounding Trash cymbal in music history...the infamous Wuhan. He is literally THE only pro whom mixes cymbal brands...especially Sabian and Zildjian.
That lick from 6:30- That little bend is why i come back to listen often!
Me too!!
That really is the moment where Trey turns a loose, kinda messy performance into one for the books
Phish really is on top of the game. Such a great jam!
MY god you guys CRUSHED that night... wow wow wow...
00:18 Standard “Tweezer” opening, but it’s the first I’ve personally heard since Trey changed his sound a year ago. Definitely more “crunchy”
01:40 After a shaky start, it seems almost like the “wheels are falling off”, as lyrics almost get fuddled, and they just aren’t very “hooked-up”
02:45 Trey starts using more effects, and this is usually a sign that Trey knows the wheels are going to fall off, or it’s going to be a sub-standard version, and he usually decides to capitalize on this dysfunction, and turn it on it’s ass and go from a sub-standard version to “breakout” version. It seems like that’s indeed what he is thinking here, as the band seem to just start to “meld” and they are smiling, and going “out” and it seems like we might have a ‘Type-II jam in front of us.
03:15 They seem to have pulled it together
03:35 You can clearly hear the audience react to what is the first real sign of a type-II jam coming up.
04:28 The first real departure from the standard format
The jam during this part is far more spacey and psychedelic than normally found during a Tweezer, especially this early in the jam.
05:45 Fish starts putting “holes” in the beat (stopping) and he greatly varies when and where these stops come, and for how long they occur, and the band follows, somewhat awkwardly, until they completely sync up, and the audience reacts with a collective “wooo” at 07:03. They continue to build on this theme of stop/start for a while, while trey delivers an extra crunchy solo.
07:47 Page takes over the jam and the band follows. At this point it’s still a Type-I jam, but don’t worry, Type-II is coming.
Regardless of the type of jam, the band has definitely melded together, into a cohesive unit, and the jam seems like it is about to take off on a journey to the stratosphere.
09:30 Page drops a bomb, that seems to signal to the audience where the jam is about to head, and the audience responds in kind. Now this point is arguable, but I also believe that this is the point where technically, the jam becomes a type-II, and leaves the tweezer structure behind, and it just feels like something epic is about to happen.
10:10 After noodling over the top of the jam up until this point, Trey takes over and starts to lead the band, the way only he can, on this musical journey.
11:07 Fish kicks the beat into the Second gear, and the jam starts to take shape. This is where I first hear the similarities to the Grateful Dead’s “I Know You Rider” jam.
11:58 Trey begins experimenting with what will become the “Theme” of this jam, that he uses throughout, to take us along on this journey. “Variations on a theme” - Trey uses this in his style of jamming all the time.
13:17 They shift into third gear and continue to take the jam farther up!
14:00 The jam continues to build and the “I know you rider” feeling continues to emerge. The band is in quite good form tonight.
14:55 Shift it into Fourth and hold the f**k on!
15:35 Shift it into overdrive (Fifth, LOL) and I’ll stop reviewing for now so you can listen to what may be the finest music I’ve ever heard, not just from Phish, but from ANYONE, and this continues until 18:20. (check out the crowd at 17:05) If you are listening to this (watching it) for the first time, while reading this, please rewind to the 15:35 mark and listen to these 3 minutes of jamming again. It’s absolute perfection.
18:20 Type-II! Anything can happen, and it usually does. They take the jam to a more dark and mysterious place.
19:55 The first chord of “Death Don’t Hurt Very Long” is heard, and you can listen on until the end of this video, with no more comments by me. P{;ease continue to the end, as the rest of the jam is just as Epic. I just wanted to focus on the main jam secion, and throw this in the face of anyone who says or even thinks Phish has lost their edge. I don’t f**king think so!
Nice write up!
hearing the crowd cheer at that 9:30 moment just gives me the biggest goosebumps!
@@doubleu2 good ears. that's right when page suggests to move to a type ii jam
Totally agree with the 15:35 mark amazing
This second set rocked my world. Long live the Phish from Vermont!
17:05 sums it all up. I love this band - #jahwork
17:05 the skull and crossbones t-shirt, you are the lucky winner! 🍀😬👍
I saw 28 shows in 2018, and this was by far my favorite
I like the part when they jam.
I like.
Huh. Didn't catch that part
Meeee too! So do my friends.
I hear “i know you rider” on that jam. Love it
Ah yes. 2 years later and I'm back to revisit this again. Part of me likes this more than the 2019 MSG Tweezer.
I think I prefer Sig's 1:44:01
They’re so different but equally unbelievable. I couldn’t pick between them, it’s just entirely dependent on my mood. Each jam has taken me to space many times
@@ClysmiC11 Same
In the words of Bob Weaver, thank you so fucking much Phish. What a year!!!!!
This was absolutely bonkers.
From 15:00 to 18:30 is some of the best playing I’ve heard from Trey in the 3.0 era.
I pretty much came to say this. What a goddamn legend. So much soul in there and wow does it rip.
I could dedicate my life from here on out and never play 3 minutes like that in my life.
Tears were streaming down my face at 31:20-BLISS!!!!!!! Unbelievable. Thanks guys for such magnificent music.Don't know where I'd be without this band. The whole set just smoked. Alchemy.
Best band EVER!!!
This is total garbage
Tim Mathews... then go somewhere else. Quit wasting your time listening to total garbage. You won’t see me trolling Cardi B video comments
@@timmathews803 Timmy here likes New Kids on the Block!
This was absolutely bananas! This was my favorite song of the run!
This run was so fucking good... it is hard to start this jam and not finish it!!!!! Perfect!
Oh man this is just pure fucking glory.
0:08 Tweezer
19:55 Death Don't Hurt Very Long
26:58 Tweezer
'Huh this song has a pretty good ambient vibe. I bet we're almost - oh, 9 minutes. okay. that's how this band works, right.'
Jam totally had a Know You Rider vibe going there.
That's what I'm saying
It was dope
Fur shur. Or, rather, a “The-transition-from-Chinacat-into-Rider” vibe...Trey even threw in the specific recharge lick. 👍
I heard a little Duane Allman in it, too. Absolutely stellar run at YEMSG. I love those guys so much.
absolutely!
I'm proud of how Phish fans don't have their phones out at shows the way crowds do at other shows... LISTEN TO THE MUSIC! *TWEEZER DEATH*
Ddhvl nice little rockin funky jams with some cool vocal drops.
Is there even a bad tweezer, I keep getting impressed every tweezer I listen to!!
This run was quite good.
All the dislikes on this is just from people tripping out so hard that they accidentally click it on their phone and don’t notice😅 By far one of my favorite jams! I was at this show!!!
PlainLamp dislikes are for death don't hurt very long. It hurts the whole time.
This was one hell of a Nite and Trey Hammered this Tweezer
Can’t watch this enough
16:30 is where they really kick it into high gear.
Brilliant Band. At their peak fun. It can’t get better
Im determined to get Page on the turntables.Lol the transition was like blend technique DJs used in the 80s. How about A Tribe Called Quest and Phish on the same stage one day soon?
yusef spencer Throw in Digable Planets and JRAD, you got yourself the best festival going. 😎👍
This was amazing
Best show I've attended.
Epic, seeing the whole show tonight!
Thank you Phish
We were in the building 28/29
Unreal show on 29, so happy you released this!!
::edit:: webcast production team killing it!! 🙌 🍻 shout out!!
::edit 2:: 15:40 ...so good
Samoset Seafarm I went the 28/29 too this whole second set was awesome
sad this couldn't extend out to include page dropping into the best no quarter ever
Trill! What a jam !! Fire flames
Wow. Did not attend but this is exceptional. Dammmmn
Should've included the Carini. That segue was FLAWLESS. This is a masterpiece. All-Time great.
Robert Malden Should’ve included the whole f**king show. Buried Alive barn-burner to open, Blaze solid type I, 46 Days crushed and the ~> into Cities was awesome, then the big fat Wolfman’s?! That’s just the first set. Telling ya, 12/29 and 12/30 slayed so hard
Returning to forever
wow Trey's transition back to Tweezer was dope
Sillkkkkyyy Johnssstttiiiiinnn
Fuck yeah! So much fun! Treys tone is 11/10, funk for the people bob weaver
12/30 lacking some video love! How about that WeekaTube or the Light???
16 people in pain disagree that Death Don't Hurt Very Long >>>>>>>^^^^^
Thank you Phish!!
Phuckin EPIC show!!!!!!
Beautiful
Was awesome!
Incredible
trey fucking with woo's fishman fucking with trey's woo cues *FUCKING* *PRICELESS*
Death will hurt very long for 15 people. funky stuff. love it
Bob Weaver in full effect
One of the greatest jam sequences of all time. Put this up against anything, in any era, and it will compete with it.
Phan2112 GTFOH it’s alright, not even top 10 of 3.0. Better jams in this year alone. 11/3/18 scents and SOAM just to name a few.
No it won't. And that's okay. It's still awesome.
Best way to tell difference is at that 18 min mark. 90s phish might have taken that top of the jam and run with it until your brain melted and then move into some other burner, etc. Its all in the book. They've been writing the book for 30years. You need to read the book.
The Tweezer wasn't great and it was a clumsy jam. The whole thing was mediocre. The Death don't hurt was cool. If pressed to rank this it wouldn't be in top 100. Happy New year!
No
that shot of Treys shadow on Pages keys is the most money shot i have seen in livephish
I called Carini into Death Don't. I was just off and oh my! This was amazing. I wish this included the Carini into it
This was fun
Banjo spotting at 24:49.
Holy fuck! Ppl keep saying how around the 17 mark they absolutely slay but I'm stuck 8m the phunky type 2 starting at 4:58, I get about 5min past and right back to 4:58 its happened 3 times in a row. Shits got me all phunked up, in the quagmire & the muck. Normally I'm a total 93-98 fluffer/lover but if they played like this all the time I would look at like that was just an awesome phase of their career that in its own way is almost as good as 3.0
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Definitely cant always listen tease at 15:30ish. They played that at my first nye run 2015-2016.
Top tier.
Happy Holidays or whatever.
12:12 I'M LOVING IT
💙Phish 💙Tray
THIS IS IT!
Death don't hurt very long is baaaaaadddddddd
I call this "I Know You Tweezer"
Who doesn't love Phish ? (rhetorical question)
Around 6 minutes in, Fishman puts the pedal to the metal!!!
so. fucking. good
When i saw the name i thought they were gonna do death dont have no mercy
#ChrisKuroda MVP!
Did anyone find my jacket after this show?
Black Berne jacket with a jolly roger patch over the left breast.
Things got digital during the 2nd set, and needless to say my jacket was a casualty.
So was the guy whose table we hijacked while eating handfuls of sauerkraut.
And the ladies behind the counter who sold the hot dog to us.
And the usher.
DIY Tutorial Guy jacket? I'd be looking for my face...
Cant' always listen at 15:15 ?
SUMMER TOUR IS ALMOST HERE!
We were robbed by fate.
HAIL PHISH.
