Hey I'm sorry I got a little too excited and talked over some of the story stuff at the beginning. I was honestly really blown away by the look and feel of everything and I got carried away. I'm really loving the game and I've been so excited about it for so long that I guess I went a little too hard when I finally got to experience it.
Bro please do it again! It made it 10x interesting for me since I always was obsessed with mythology stories and you always have the answers
You're good man, I'm here to listen to your reactions and commentary wtih all the lore!
Hi I just thought it was funny how you were talking about everything and missed how they were talking about that everything you keep saying had already happened I'm sure once you restart the game a listen than watch this video you to would have a good laugh
Actually the real funny part was you didn't even talk over the first part but still missed it 😂😅
The biggest one is Julin-Shen the Tremendous Spirit, a giant vanguard of heaven's army, obeying general Li Jin, he was the first god to challenge wukong last time, but lost almost immediately.
Wukong smashed Julin's weapon, but he escaped thanks to General Li's son, Nezha. General Li was so angry about Julin being a deserter, even wanted to have him executed, again Nezha saved him, persuaded his father to spare Julin because even him could not defeat Sun Wukong. In the end, only Erlang (Jade Emperor's nephew) can fight Wukong as equal.
PS:
Yang Jian, aka Erlang (meaning the second son of house Yang), the Jade Emperor's demigod nephew, has a goddess mother and a mortal father, with a magical third-eye (the Eye of Heaven), keeps a hound named Xiaotian (Sky Howler). He is usually described as a man of gentle and honor, strange for him to act like a dick in the game's intro.
Li Nezha, third born of General Li Jin, known for slaying the dragon prince Ao Bin, son of king Ao Guang (who was robbed by Wukong, of the staff and the armor). Nezha appears as a young lad wearing crimson, wielding the Fire-Tip Spear, and can transform into three-head-six-arm.
Wukong, Erlang, Nezha are known as the three troublemakers of Heaven. They listen, but they do not take commands. If the Court wants their service, say "please".
This Battle is AFTER Journey to the west:
-Erlang mentions that monkey was named Buddha
-Monkey mentions Zhu bajie
-Erlang calls him Victorious Fighting Buddha
-The old monkey said that monkey attained Buddhahood.
The very same thoughts I had while playing this opening sequence. I appreciate how subtle the delivery is - it feels natural. I almost missed a few of these revelations because of it.
idk how he missed every single one of that references.
@@lucifuge927 because he was talking over the dialogue
and Erlang says that he has bested Wukong before, so this is clearly not their first fight
@@DennisJ16 Yup, tho I like how Wukong litrally calls Erlang a liar for it which is true lmao
I won't mind you making this a series
Same
I mind, I extremely want him to make it a series😂
I'm waiting.
Everyone else has pointed out that the battle actually takes place after the original journey to the west, but also, there's one pretty big mythology reference that you missed: Erlang cutting open a mountain with his axe is a reference to one of his myths, where he cuts open a mountain to save his mother
@Catanada Yeah, when I first saw Yang Jian use the Axe to attack Sun Wukong I was like "Wait that's the Axe he used to save his Mother (who by the way was Yu Di/Huang's Sister), that's such a cool attention to detail!"
It was Erlang's nephew who took the axe and saved his (the nephew's) mother (Erlang's sister) by splitting a mountain. The story is called The Lotus Lamp. It was animated in the year 2000, check it out, it was a timeless masterpiece.
Black myth Wukong story Movies can be searched .{ Journey to the West ep. 01 The Monkey King is born } 1986 (Complete) Eng Sub
@@maxchen9185 erlang is the nephew. His mom was the sister to the jade emperor I think
@@luckystarplays1837 i see you ve done your homework. It was indeed Erlang who splitted the mountain and saved his mother in Journey to the West. But this version of the story in JTTW stem from The Lotus Lamp. And Erlang is the villain in that story, the protagonist is Chen Xiang.
You are not wrong since it was Journey to the West we are talking about here.
Here's the Link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Magic_Lotus_Lantern
As you can see. The Lotus Lamp predates the JTTW by almost another 1000 years.
this is after Journey to the west.
at start, WUKONG said : my master - saved, the scriptures- sound
he want go back to his mountain, live free, but somehow~ they wont let him~ thats why they sent the army to get him.
To make sure Er Lang Shen can beat him, someone put his JINGU (the crown) back, to Limit him.
then Wukong got killed, split to 6 parts,
we are his descendants. try to collect all 6 parts to bring him back~
In some movie or series, Wukong still keep the jingu as souvenir from the journey
lol, the Buddha play trick on him again, he never take the crown off him. Wukong too strong for Heaven sake after he obtain Buddhahood. What why the game called black myth
It’s a disgrace to the gods. Can u imagine Jesus invite u to heaven and u reject it? He would be mad it shamed heaven. Story make total sense. 😮
@@user-pm4ko9uk8g read the story buddy then understand why Wukong pissed
@@user-pm4ko9uk8g Simping for the heavens huh?
Couldn't be me.
Monkey mode all the way
Really wish you'd have payed attention to the dialog in the beginning. They outright tell you that this is after journey to the west. They make references to previous fights and Wukong wouldn't have the circlet the first time he fights Shen.
If you guys pay attention you would notice that they made mention of journey to the west this takes place after
yeah fr
@@mennnn972 thank you you know they gotta feel embarrassed after they read all these comments like here they are saying when this battle took place even duo that is a completely different fight that already happened say Sun should have his armor after he becomes Buddha literally just said he was a Buddha their going to have so much yoke on their faces after this and all they had to do was stop talking a listen
They were too busy talking.
Don't ya just love the talking over dialogue that shows that this after the journey
Too exited maybe haha. My Chinese friend spent 30 minutes non stop yapping about JTTW when i said i bought the game 😂
Watching him miss every hint that this takes place AFTER Journey to the West is actually a little funny. Kept waiting for every line thinking he was gonna go "....wait a minute -"
This is happening after the Journey to the west
If he wasn't too busy explaining every single thing he would have realized it was post journey to the west instead of the whole comment section correcting him, victorious fighting buddha was the most clear hint in the dialogue
or when Erling shin indicated that they fought before
@@mennnn972 wukong's first speech was "master-safe, scripture-sound" that alone was hinting what timeline they were in or at least make you ponder on the timeframe
Like men just relax, of course you know the story but just calm down
Relax he just got over excited
The intro of black myth takes place after wukongs journey to the west and the bulk of the game you play as a member of his tribe with similar powers trying revive the monkey king
I feel like this mythology has inspired so many games. This has to be one of the most faithful.
How did he miss litrally EVERY reffrence to the Journey to west and saying that Wukong had already been made in to a Buddha?
He even speaks about his monk master and the holy scriptures. and was reffrenced as "The Victorious Fighting Buddha".....
He was making to many jokes
Japanese kanji characters were borrowed from Chinese hanzi as a writing system. The two languages share some of the same characters, and the pronunciation of kanji in Japanese is based on ancient Chinese pronunciation.
For example, the character name 孫悟空 is written the same in both Chinese and Japanese, but in Chinese, it is pronounced 'Sun Wukong,' while in Japanese, it is pronounced 'Son Goku.'
@sihouhisou948 Yep, pretty much, also...

I would have done that if subtitles weren't so small.

The big guy at the back was Juling Shen, or Giant Spirit God, the giant river god of the Yellow River.
In the original JttW, Juling Shen was the first guy the Heavenly Court sent to subdue Wukong. The subsequent no effort beating he took from Wukong was so embarrassing that the Heavenly Court almost had him executed.
Also as you probably noticed later, the first fight is set after the end of the JttW. Having been trapped under a mountain for 500 years even before the start of the journey, Wukong was well over the "wanting to be a big shot" phase, as we see in the JttW during the few times Wukong was expelled from Sanzang's fellowship, he would simply return to Mount Huaguo to chill with his monkey subjects.
巨灵神和四大天王
I love how they talked over the dialogue and ignore the conversation :)
After all the crap they said at the beginning at how having it on english audio would make it easier to follow 🙄🙄🙄
13:58 Alright time for an explanation, spoilers ahead.
Ok hear goes
In one of the endings for this game, an animated cutscene is shown revealing that unlike the ending of the Original Journey to the West. The Buddha actually left the Golden Headband on Wukong without him knowing, to Wukong he saw it be removed. Why?? Simple: The Heavens never trusted the Great Sage.
thank you for putting the spoiler tag. with that said that`s a dumb reason. heaven would clearly not trust him but they fall below Budha in the hieratic and Budha took care of Wukong.
And in that ending, we don't take the headband again.
@Fppiq Wow, I mean get the saying "Better Safe Than Sorry" but still what a VERY asshole move for Gautama to do on Wukong, especially given all the stuff that happened during that 14-Year Long Journey...
@@londonjackson8986in Buddha defense Wukong rekt the Jade Palace to the ground until he arrived so yeah he don't want to deal with him again
Out of everyone I watch, your reaction to this game was the one I was most eager to see! Looking forward to more here on the channel!
This is after Journey to the west, Wukong gave up his buddhahood to be with his people but the heaven ain't having the wrecker of the imperial palace loose.

As a native Chinese, I’m really impressed by how much you know about Wukong. Great video! I can’t wait to watch the next one.
You guys are amazing! After watching many RUclipsrs' gameplay videos, I astonishedly found that you have a thorough understanding of the novel itself. Although the game's story happens after the original one, it's deeply rooted in the Journey to the West.
I hope the following information helps you:
- As mentioned on the Wiki, the original novel is "at once a comic adventure story, a humorous satire of Chinese bureaucracy, a source of spiritual insight, and an extended allegory." So, besides the mythology, the story is more about reflecting on ancient Chinese political traditions and Buddhism.
- Frankly, Wukong is also a Yaoguai, and he was the only one not initially connected to heaven (Master, Pig, Sand, and even the horse were all descended from either heaven or Linshan); that's why he was the protagonist of the novel and also the reason that he was the only one put on the golden band.
- Erlang Shen is also a god with his own story; some weapons he used against Wukong were not described in the original novel but collected from his own mythology. Just want to mention that the huge axe was used to split the mountain to save his imprisoned mother (briefly mentioned in the Journey to the West in the introduction of Erlang Shen).
Look forward to seeing more of your amazing plays!
A funny little detail is when Sun Wukong tells Erlang Shen to "fight him in the woods" in English, in Chinese he tells him to "fight in uncle's woods", which is also from Journey to the West, as Sun Wukong calls Erlang Shen "nephew" all the time in the book 😂
Man, This is so hard to much. A man so eager to show off knowledge and does not pay attention to actual dialog and story. 😢
LOL
I love how instantly i'm already learning things
the mythology guy - has amazing indepth knowledge about the story and lore
also the mythology guy - talks over entire introduction so he misses everything introducing the game's story and lore 😅😅😅
haha hope you enjoy the game ❤
What the hell is it with Sun WuKong having some of the most visually hype things recently. First Lego Monkie Kid, now this!
RIP Flying Bark studios
+MinecraftWorld1954 Don't forget Zhi Zaishi Yao Wang (The Reincarnated Yao King), Zhi Dasheng Guilai (The Great-Sage Returns) & Xi Xing Ji (West Bound Record)! Those also had plenty of visually hype moments for Xiyouji (West-Journey-Record) Adaptations!
If you actually paid attention, you can notice that Sun Wukong didn't have a health bar at the beginning since he's immortal. That's a good way to make a tutorial.
i'm only vaguely familiar with the journey to the west, mainly from fate grand order and whatever was referenced in the first couple dragonball arcs, but that intro still made me giddy like a kid on christmas, plenty of stuff i recognized and remembered "oh yeah he was able to do that", i also really like Wukong's english voice, it fits his character pretty well and it's easy to tell that the va is doing his best
I love his reaction to almost fighting the dog “I don’t wanna fight the dog “

I liked as soon as you said "That's a pretty good monkey king voice"! Yes! I see a lot of people saying the voice is off or even bad, but it's exactly how I imagined him to sound in English even though it's not a typical western hero voice.
You guys did the best on covering the story background during the intro! Really enjoyed it
if you listened to the dialogue he calls waking "Victorious fighting Buddha"
They didn’t change the story at the beginning, this is a different fight entirely. He even says that he “bested” Wukong before in the dialogue.
One thing about the immortality thing. Except for the time he canceled himself out of the book of death, every other type of immortality is just him extending his life. All the peaches and elixirs are just for extending life but is called immortality items in the translation
This game reminds me my Dad used to tell my brother and I bedtime stories from a famous Chinese novel named 'The Journey to the West'. This game makes all the characters from the book alive.
as a Chinese person who has just moved and settled in America, love u guys so much you are so interested in Chinese mythology
This story is basically AFTER the Journey to the West... Where he has returned but the Gods turned on him again... refusing to let him live in peace...
I think the intro was after the journey of the west
- my master safe, the scriptures sound
- mentioned erlang shen as 2nd biggest boaster after the pig
- wukong is already called as victorious fighting buddha
And going by what’s going on in the myths wukong just chill after Buddhahood
but game story now the heavenly court still distrust him so they send an army again and this time erlang shen cheats to win again by using the mantra to control the headband although I thought it’s supposed to be gone after journey to the west
loop of binding is what some call it, In this we play as someone trying to bring wukong back. The intro is after the journey to the west that's the reason why he said "you talk more than the pig" as in some boss fights when you die you hear "you look like him but aren't him"
thing is erlang Sheng is trying to bring "wukong" back.
we are actually just the 6th relic of wukong and in every ending sun wukong is dead.
we are black myth wukong since we are his successor
@@XxCringyKidxX ik that elrangs fight was fun af
The ONE person I wanted to see there reaction in the intro to catch that this is set after journey to the west and you talked over all the dialog
Sucks to see oh well, I guess
Me too, after his demonstration of knowledge in the trailer reaction, such a disappointment that this his how they're gonna play the game, having bunch of friends around and talk all over everything.
Listening to the stomping of the heavenly gods and war drums I was so hype with goosebumps to play the game, it’s crazy. Epic epic intro.
don't you love how they mention not wanting to hear the game in chinese (would of been way better btw) so they can pay attention to chat and the dialogue but proceeds to talk over all of the dialog in the beginning just flexing his knowledge rather than pay attention to the story idk how every youtuber keep missing or not knowing when this game takes place when they tell you that with like 6 different lines of text back to back. man everyone using I'm streaming as a excuse to not listen to this game in its original language which is a damn shame cus so much is lost in translation
I am honestly surprised how long it took you to catch onto this being set post-Journey to the West. I caught on at the scriptures line (master could have been referencing the teacher that taught him the 72 transformations) and the second Erlang called him a buddha/claimed to have beaten him once before, then it was pretty obvious.
There’s a mistake. Master refers to Tang Sanzang, whom Sun Wukong was tasked with protecting during the journey to the West. Master puti, who taught him his skills, is as powerful as the Buddha, and does not need Sun Wukong's protection.
@@ZelinW I know its referring to Tang Sanzang. I just pointed out I caught on at the mention of the scriptures since him saying "his master" doesn't give away the time frame on its own.
Shoutout to TheMythologyGuy to nail the mythology, so accurately! This brings so much meaning and joy to the game review, which truly set you apart from other reviewers. This video deserves a much higher views! 🎉
Amen to wanting figures of this! Man, I want a freaking statue I can put in my display case; his armor is just so amazing!
he is wrong this is not the battle of heaven this starts from the ending of the journey to the west so kind of a new storyline
Lets gooooooooooo ive been waiting for this who else is as happy 😁 this needs to be a series.
I Just Want To Say That This Game Takes Place AFTER the Journey to the west
I think you missed that this game takes place after Son Goku😂 I mean Wukong has already finished his journey, that's why he's wearing the headpiece, and his composure and attitude towards immortality is different. He might have reached Buddhahood or is close to it.
He had been "appointed" as a buddha by Shakyamuni (because buddhism in JttW is different from buddhism IRL) but he now wants to quit.
Both Chinese and Japanese are written as 孫 悟空,but the Japanese pronunciation is Son Goku, and the Chinese pronunciation is Sun Wukong.
Both refer to the SAME monkey king.
20 seconds in and he's already explained what happened to him in the beginning and confused me xd I love this channel
Im really glad you loved this game, this game is amazing.
And the stream was a lot of fun
wukong is named the fighting buddha in the end of the “journey to the west ”
So when erlang shen call wukong the fighting buddha,we can know the battle is after journey to the west
The big dude at the middle is Ju Ling Shen, the river god known for his strength
The brightness setting is always fun because often the game is not optimized for the amount of brightness the screen is suggesting you choose. I always find the level they suggest and then step up the brightness by about 2 or 3 notches
Thanks. I had no idea why the crown limit his powers but it all makes sense. Can't wait for a follow-up breakdown if you want to explain more.
its refreshing to see, that these guys actually know the lore of Wukong prior to playing this game 👍
I'm excited, most reviews they don't have any background knowledge, so this is nice

It is so refreshing to see you guys understand and know the story of Sun Wukong and Journey to the West. More refreshing is you are non Asians. 15:40 I think I saw King Charles III
Oh pleeeease make it a series. i am on chapter 2 so far and I LOVE it
So, what they are doing is, this is basically a sequel to Journey to The West, you are essentially playing as Sun Wukong's descendant, who is simply known as The Destined One
I wish you could read the subtitles more… so this is after the story of JTTW
Can't be more excited for him to continue this series!!
me and my brother actually had a theory that you play as the black macaque, or someone related to him because you specialize in shapeshifting and look just like sun wukong
Oh wwow finally someone know the freaking lore. Thank god
For anyone that might be curious: WuKong is a Buddhist Dharma name given to WuKong by his master. Wù (悟) means enlightenment or realization. Kōng (空) is a Buddhist concept (Śūnyatā in Sanskrit), it refers to the idea of emptiness or voidness if translated literally. However, it conveys the concept that all phenomena are empty of intrinsic existence and don’t exist independently or permanently, and everything is interconnected and interdependent. The name WuKong thus means the person(monkey) shall acquire the wisdom of understanding the true meaning of Kong or this interconnected state of himself and the universe he’s in. Hope this helps.
Found the lore dudes.... I'm finally hope boys!
FYI: Even though you’ve mistakenly said Journey to the East when you mentioned at 9:11 ….
I don’t know if you guys know this but in fact (loosely speaking) there is another Chinese mythology about ‘Journey to the East’ as well and it’s called ‘Legend of the Eight Immortals’ and it’s also about Taoist deities within Chinese folklore.
To be frank, I can’t recall who are the 8 main characters were but they were called 八仙 literally translates as 8 immortals/deities and Chinese even has an idiom that says 八仙过海各显神通 which is to sum up the so-called moral of the entire lore because individually, each of them have their weaknesses but as destiny has it, all 8 of them would eventually cross paths and travel as a group overcoming obstacles where they would’ve otherwise failed if they hadn’t came together, harnessed their respective unique abilities in order to pass each challenge they were faced with. Since y’all are all about Mythologies, be sure to look that one up as well!
This is meant to be a sequel to the Journey to the West.
I’ve been having a blast playing this game
I think this game is set after Journey to the West cause he mentions the safety of his master (Tang Xuanzang) and the scriptures. And Erlang said he was made Budha once. Spoiler:
Also, later in the game they mention Sun Wukong fought several demons to save Tang Xuanzang
Now we need mythology guy reacting to lego monkie kid
Now I'm looking foward to BMW mythical inaccuracies
You are the first steamer who knows the background story.
The most gigantic god is 巨灵神(Ju Ling Shen, the god of gigantic spirit), although immense in size, but just a piece of cake for Sun Wukong in original novel.
Few secret bosses suggest that character we are playing is actual wukong but reborned (i guess eggstone again) i mean some bosses recognise monkey king in our character or feel scent of great sage equal to heaven
