Sadly Firefox does not play nice with datetime-local and its date picker is not that good. I mitigate this by validating the field with a regex and including the expected pattern in the error message (frameworks make this easier). Also, the backends I've worked with were robust enough to handle datetime strings without the T between the date and time. So the patter i use accepts both the version with the T for browsers that support datetime-locale and without the T for a more human looking datetime string.
