An Armchair On Wheels: 2019 Citroen C5 Aircross Review (1.2 litre Flair Model)

  • Citroen has become renowned for making comfortable cars such as the iconic DS, the niche C6, and more recently, the C4 Hatch. The car in this review should be no different; it’s called the C5 Aircross, and it will go toe-to-toe with the likes of the Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage. Is it magnifique, or is it enough to make you shout out sacrebleu?
    The model reviewed in this video is the mid-range Flair trim level, fitted with the 1.2 litre turbocharged PureTech petrol engine, which offers 129hp with 230Nm of torque.
    This power is mated to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox, although you can have an automatic if you go for a different engine. Fancy all wheel drive? I'm afraid it's not available in the C5 Aircross, but you can get a feature called 'Grip Control', which gives you all weather tyres and different driving modes to provide better traction.

    Dunno what's going on in France but they certainly pulled their baguettes out their arses and are designing some cracking cars. I never thought I'd ever buy a French car but I got a 208 gti and it's brilliant and nothing wrong at all with it. Well done the French.

    Oddly enough I was considering one as my next car. I figured to buy it at 2 years old when it's dropped in value. But in 2022 used cars are fetching (or at least being advertised) at silly prices. Like a 3 year old car is 20 grand, when it was 26 new. My worry is that I'll buy one and prices will crash to where they "should be" giving new car depreciation rates to a used vehicle. Nice....

    I like the emphasis on comfort. I got fed up of driving crashy, hard-suspension family hatchbacks before buying my current car. They all seem set up like sports cars - I don't get it. But Cirtroen aren't renowned for reliability - other than that I might chance one. Great review. I agree with others who have said it's a tad expensive for what it is - and it will only get worse post-brexit.

    Good to see that Citroen have carved themselves a distinct identity again, making distinctive comfort-orientated cars in the same vein as the DS, CX, BX and the XM. Still not keen on that infotainment system, though!

      you wait til you have to update it, a 3 hour download on your pc, then 3 hours to upload it to your usb stick, an hour to upload the firmware into the car and up to another 3 hours to update the shat Naff system, if you want all the countries in the world mapped and all with the engine running. the engine must be running for usb updates, fortunately all this is free from the Citroen website although live mapping is charged at £75 a year, Ive got a Garmin with lane guidance and lifetime maps for free which takes 20 mins to update online much cheaper. ive got the 1.5 diesel Auto with the 8 speed Torque converter gearbox Flair model reviewed here, its a very comfortable motor. it does an average of 58 to the gallon thats better than my old car a 2019 Dacia Duster 1.5 dci manual at 52 mpg.I spent nearly all day in the car a couple of days ago on 7-hour journey and I didnt feel tired at all.

    This was on my shortlist for my next company car, but it loses residual value at a frightening rate, being only worth half its purchase price after 2 years. Hence the lease rates are higher than those even for more premium or Japanese (reliable) models.
    Pity, there is a lot to be said for a new emphasis on comfortable cars as our roads get worse and worse.
    Good review by the way, fair and thorough!

    Recently test drove the Vauxhall Grandland X Sport Nav and the C5 Aircross Flair back to back. After a good long drive I preferred the Grandland X. Obviously it is a personal decision, but for me the C5 has a lot of style over function. For instance the digital dash, it's impressive at first but doesn't actually offer anything other than lots of ways to arrange what you as a driver actually need to know - your speed, and how much fuel you have. A major annoyance is the way other settings are accessed, for example, to adjust the cabin temperature, you have to touch a pad, then use the 8" display, to adjust the temp, no tactile feed back, in the Vauxhall you simply turn a knob, much easier when you are driving. The Vauxhall has proper switches for other functions too, much easier and safer than having to rely on looking at the Touchscreen to see if it is showing the function you want to adjust.
    The fancy Citroen suspension makes the ride in the C5 is nice and smooth, until, that is, you hit one of the deeper potholes on the UK's terrible roads, then the initial hit is really hard, much harder than the the Grandland . The soft ride has little in the way of damping, turning into sharp turns the C5 exhibits much more roll than the Grandland X. On urban tight roundabouts the C5 displayed pronounced body roll, but not in a uniform manner, the turn in was vague and it pitched, rolling into the turn at the front then the roll moving to the rear, very odd. The Vauxhall did not do this, its turn in was sharper and the roll uniform and predictable.
    For me, the big soft seats were not as good are the ERG certified seats in the Grandland X. They are however, wider and flatter than the Grandland X seats, which have a more pronounced "bucket seat" style.
    One thing that really is missing from the C% Aircross is the ability to drop the rear seats from inside the boot. The Grandland X does this. This is a real oversight in this class of car.
    I also thought wind noise from the area at the top of the windscreen at motorway speed was a a little too much, possibly the roof rails, due to the protruding horn shape at the ends?
    I was impressed with the 3 cylinder 1.2 petrol engine though, easily pulling smoothly from 1000 rpm in 3rd gear. It makes a decent noise under acceleration as well. Much nicer than the diesel which is rough, I could feel the pulses through the accelerator pedal and my rear passenger said they felt the engine through the rear seat as well.
    My final thought really is a matter of opinion, but the Aircross is too design conscious, by which I mean it is over-styled, yes it stands out in a world of cars that mostly try to look like Audi's and BMW's, which is to be applauded, but over time I think like, a boy band member, its looks will fade whilst the competition mature gracefully over time with modest facelifts. Citroen's answer will be to resort to a major restyle, instantly dating this model.

      not that I find your… let not call them complaints, let call them observations of driving these two vehicles false or anything, I even agree with most of them… but, I believe that the whole point of this car is in it beeing like it is.... cause... you do know that Vauxhal Grandland X and Citroen C5 Aircross are basically two versions of the same car!
      meaning, what could you wish for more, than having two - or, better to say four (because of DS7 and Pug 3008) - models sharing platform, engines and transmission, differ so much in their design, on board ambiance and road behaviour, that 95% of people wouldn't even think of them beeing related, let alone beeing "repackaged&rebranded" product... like VAG's Tiguan/Kodiak/Ateca! ...not that I think they are bad products or anything but, they are kind of "same thing with different badge".... so, I somehow understand why C5 AC is like it is. as you noticed in your observations, it gives me choice in far wider sense than just in "choice of badge"... and I think that's great!

    • @huwjones5879
      @huwjones5879 5 лет назад +1

      @@mirkozlikovski9553 Thanks for the reply. I'm fully aware of the platform sharing, which is why I made the comparison. I think it is interesting that two cars with so much in common can be so different, not only in style but the way they drive. Citroen have always been a left-field choice in the UK and I think the AC will appeal to those who like the slight over-styling. The Grandland tries to be more Audi/BMW for those who can't or won't spend the money. Choices indeed.

    • @cannavaras

      @@huwjones5879 I'm handing my lease 3008 GT Line back today, its been the best car I've had. I love it. Sad to see it go. My replacement? The C5 Aircross. I liked the 3008 so much I wanted another but I also hate getting the same lease car twice lol. I had my list of must haves and the only car to come close was the C5. The Grandland does not cut it at all in the style department and there is too much "old fashioned" about the car for me. I certainly wouldnt get one. So Mirko is right, different horses for different courses. I prefer the design and usability of the C5.

    • @huwjones5879
      @huwjones5879 5 лет назад

      @@cannavaras Hi, The French styling is to your taste, fair enough, just for me it was over-styled and the staid design of the Grandland X appealed more. I thought the Grandland X was less "floaty" as well. Obviously the platform they are all based on is good though if you are happy going for it again, which is good to know.
      Did you have the Grip Control on your 3008? I'm intrigued by it, there is some good stuff on RUclips showing it's very effective, but mostly in German, French or Polish. In the UK the reviewers generally dismiss it by saying there is no 4x4 but an option of a fancy traction control. Clarkson raved about it on the C3 Aircross in a recent Grand Tour and what he did with it was pretty impressive! Vauxhall's version IntelliGrip is only a £200 option.

    • @cannavaras
      @cannavaras 5 лет назад

      @@huwjones5879 I didnt Huw. I never really needed it and live in Bournemouth so snow is very rarely an issue. Its more the interior of the Grandland I have an issue with. Its like they didnt even try? Its lifted straight out of the year 2004 and is surprising compared to almost all manufacturers nowadays. The ride in the 3008 GTLine was a bit hard but the 1.2T engine is a real gem. More power than you ever need, even when full with 5 people and luggage. Plenty of away matches full of supporters. We were all comfortable and its a great cruiser. The C5 is even better than that (from my short experience).

      I just part exed my 30k 2018 Dacia Duster 1.5 dci manual and paid 9K on top for my 2019 29k flair model 1.5 diesel Auto 8 speed and it does more to the gallon than my old car aprox 6mpg more at 58 mpg and its a proper torque converter gearbox with no dual mass flywheel. it is very quiet on the motor way to , I bought it in Dartford and drove it home approx. 100 miles for the first time driving it after my initial test drive for 20 mins,
      on the M11 M25 and A14 in really bad weather it was chucking it down with rain the car gripped the road really well at a constant 70 mph with cruise control on. the michelin tyres it was on were not that great at the time, which I replaced when I got home at £85 a tyre, which isnt to bad for 18inch by 235mm width wheels. lots of tread on the road. I needed an auto for health reasons and i Looked at Renaults and Dacias and Kias and they all had automated manual gearboxes with dry clutches that wear out and need replacement in about 8 years time, so I found out that the Citroen had a proper torque converter gearbox , the only requirement is timely fluid changes to take really good care of it. Ive had it safety inspected and taken out an extended warranty on it mainly for the auto gearbox against wear and tear and for that I needed a full service done regardless of anything supposedly done by the used car supplier and the cost of that was £160, including for my own preference new front brake pads. as winter is coming here in the UK.
