This is their debut release... A side Whistle B side Boombayah. You haven't figure it out yet... They don't ever miss. In their Netflix documentary they talk (along with Teddy) about recording the whistling done by Jisoo.
They dont ever miss because they CHOOSE *EXTREMELY* CAREFULLY what to release. Folks will hate their company... Yet LOVE the things that gets released.
It's like they'll believe the bullshit the industry says about yg but not respect them for the results that company brings out. Baffling but very typical.

Since debut, Jenni was labeled the Main Rapper and Lisa was a Lead Rapper. There duo raps are the best!!🔥 Newcomers don't seem to know this, but Jenni can rap!!🔥
Of course Jennie can rap. Her specialties in the group, according to YG are "vocals/rap". Lisa's specialties, according to YG are "rap/dance". They are the rappers of Blackpink. They have never been ranked above or below each other. Lisa raps more often because her "audio" specialty is rapping and, since nobody can hear "dancing" her dance specialty is not expressed in any audio tracks (plus to fully express her dancing, she usually has to do her own separate projects). Jennie has always split her time between singing and rap because her specialties have always been vocals (singing) and rap.
Actually, that "main" and "lead" stuff is not and never has been official. For BP, it was started by fans who went all over social media in 2016 pretending that they had an official position ranking list of the members, according to "main" and "lead" positions. It was fake and never came from YG. (Lazy Kpop media just repeats what they see fans saying. And Kprofiles (which many fans mistakenly think is official) have acknowledged that they never confirmed the list of "main" and "lead" rankings with YG. They copied from sloppy Melon, which also never claims that they got the list from YG.)
I don't know why Kpop fans are so obsessed with the "main" and "lead" ranking nonsense. The group has almost never even mentioned the words when talking about each other and the company has never announced any such thing and have never talked about "main rapper" versus "lead rapper nonsense (and on rare occasions when they've used the word "lead" or "main" it's never been in a way that confirms the rankings that some fans are obsessed with).
But some fans still persist in going all over social media repeating the fake list of "main" and "lead" position rankings. It's weird that they never ask the most basic question. Why are they going all over social media repeating a detailed list of so-called position rankings, when BP and YG never have confirmed any such list and never talk about it? (You can easily go see the official Blackpink Debut Showcase of YG, held in 2016, where YG announced specialties, but NEVER ranked the members as higher or lower than each other. For the past 6 years, for anyone who knows how to do any research instead of just repeating what they see others repeating, it has always been possible to go to the YG official website and see that they never use those "main" or "lead" labels to talk about any BP members.) As announced by YG in 2016, the "specialties" are: Jisoo - vocals ; Jennie - vocals/rap ; Rose - vocals ; Lisa - rap/dance. Of course they can all do other types of parts, but the specialties announced by YG in the Debut Showcase just indicate the types of parts they do most often. Jennie was always expected more than other members to do both singing and rapping parts, sometimes focusing more on singing and sometimes focusing more on rapping as literally indicated by YG announcing her specialties as "vocals/rap". Lisa was always expected to most often do rapping parts.
The group has always referred to Lisa and Jennie as the rap line or as "the rappers". They do not use any "main rapper" label. (The singers are singers. No "main" or "lead" nonsense. The rappers are rappers. That's how YG talks about them. YG never ranks them and, frankly, it would be dumb to label any members as lower-level performers in their announced specialty areas. It's just a really weird part of Kpop fan culture to make up position rankings. It's often not accurate and usually is not anything official. (It doesn't even make sense if you think about it much. In English "main" does not mean better than "lead" and "lead" never means lower or second-best.)

Jennie is the "main rapper"and Lisa is "lead rapper", the position "Main" is higher than " Lead" , it's like 1st and 2nd place , it's hard to see Jennie rapping because her company YG doesn't let her rap but prefers to make her sing the most because Jennie is a powerful vocalist too, Lisa is the "Main dancer" of the group so she dance and gets to rap the most.

Believe it or not, Jennie's main role in the group is the Main Rapper and Lead Singer. And Lisa is the Main Dancer and Lead Rapper. Because Jennie can also sing good, most of the raps were given to Lisa. And Lisa knows how to deliver when she raps. Both are very talented and can't be replaced by anyone for they have their own style when they sing and rap. Also, please react to their B Side of their songs. They don't have MV's but I think you will enjoy their B Side songs.

I'm glad that you loved this song even after getting acquainted to their infamous chorus drops. On their documentary, they mentioned that making this the title track was so risky for a debut song.
While it is good on its own, of course the first impression would matter and, statistically, heavy sounding songs would do much better.
But this song swept the whole kpop scene on its feet. It was fresh, vibrant, and chic.

Jennie is the main rapper. from day zero, this was established while they were still trainees. Lisa is second or Lead rapper, they have different style of rapping as Lisa is swag while Jennie goes with speed and tempo. Jennie is also fluent in english and understood the english rap scheme, while Lisa was still learning Korean and English in the trainee stage. Lisa is still a great study and knows what she has to do to be great. What ever Lisa learns, she masters.

Lisa obviously would have been rapping along with songs on the radio and elsewhere as much before joining YG as Jennie did. When Jennie was talking about her trainee rapping on Zach Sang, she was talking about just a short period of time BEFORE Lisa joined and what she was saying was that she was assigned rapping parts in trainee group performances because AT THAT TIME she was the only one who could handle fast rapping in English due to being the only one who could speak English well. If you look at the Netflix documentary and other videos and information from YG about the time that Lisa and Jennie were both trainees, it's obvious that Lisa was doing just as much rapping and rapping was one of the performance categories that Lisa got straight "A"s in.
I don't care at all if people have their preferences. But you shouldn't go around spreading fake stories to make it seem like Jennie is a better rapper than Lisa.

There is no official "main rapper" versus "lead rapper" ranking. When they debuted, YG announced specialties (no "main" or "lead" rankings whatsoever). According to YG, Jennie's specialties are "vocals/rap" (stated in exactly that order). Lisa's specialties are "rap/dance" (stated in exactly that order). According to the specialties announced by YG, it was always expected that Jennie would focus on singing in some songs and in other songs focus on rapping. Lisa was always expected to focus mostly on rapping. Some fans "always call out YG" when Jennie doesn't rap in a song because they ignore what YG actually said about member specialties and instead mindlessly believe in the ridiculous "main" and "lead" rankings that are repeated everywhere by some fans (but never mentioned or confirmed EVER by YG).

Yeah, it’s a pretty strong debut song! You should listen to their entire first album called “The Album”. It’s only 8 songs, and you’ve heard some of them already. It’s honestly one of those albums where every single song is so good. Quality over quantity!!

YG has never even mentioned anything about any "main rapper" versus "lead rapper" nonsense. That obsession with ranking members is on Kpop fans and lazy Kpop media. It's not official and never was. This song was composed by B.I. (aka Kim Hanbin) who used to be in iKON, a label-mate group of Blackpink. He wrote Love Scenario ( a sensational song in kpop culture) and almost all of his group's discography and won Songwriter of the Year in 2018, the first idol to ever receive that award. There are no "main" or "lead" rankings. There are only the specialties that YG announced in the 2016 Blackpink Debut Showcase. Jennie's specialties were announced as "vocals/rap" (in that exact order) by YG. Jennie was always expected more than other members to split between focusing on singing in some songs and rapping in other songs. She doesn't rank higher or lower than anyone else in the vocals and rap specialties. Lisa's specialties were listed as "rap/dance" (in that exact order by YG. She was always expected to mostly focus on rapping in BP songs. Lisa does not rank higher or lower than Jennie in the rap specialty. She's the only one that YG mentioned as having a "dance" specialty. Jisoo and Rose were both listed as having "vocals" as their specialty. People need to do more research and stop mindlessly repeating things without understanding. “Actual main rapper” LOL! The way you people try soooo hard to discredit/downplay Lisa’s rap skills is ridiculous. She raps a lot in every song for a reason. And many people who praise or are blown away by her skills is enough proof that she is really top-tier
The problem is, in 3rd gen when BP debuted (and before), rap -- while a necessary part of every kpop song ever -- is a low status position, relatively speaking. "The" group rapper usually only got one set of lines (a verse or the bridge), amounting to the least amount of time in line distribution. BP consciously set out to change this, witness multiple rap parts in this, but in other songs, when push came to shove, Jennie got the lion's share of rap lines (and occasionally sings!) leaving Lisa underutilized (a thing Lisa-biased folks like me notice). Lisa's breakout as a top-tier dancer in the industry was a revelation, and only happened once she was allowed to go solo. Red Velvet finessed the rapper's status problem by not assigning the position, literally every RV member has rapped in a song -- but as with BP, fans hung "main" and "lead" tags on them regardless, because "that's how it's done".

Their first song and still one of my favorites! Funny thing is that their label, YG entertainment, didn't want to release this track but Teddy (the producer) and the girls really pushed for it and released it anyways. Now we are in 2022 and they are the biggest girl group in the world!

I'm so glad you are able to discover BP before it's too late...my first experience of K-Pop was discovering 4 Minute, but it was right when they disbanded and there was no more new music to come from them...thankfully, having binged a bunch of 4 Minute, Hyuna and Big Bang, YT recommended Boombaya/Whistle, the day they dropped and I was hooked! We can only hope there is a good long future ahead for the ladies

Dude, they are super talented, trained for 4-6 years before debut. But all their hits (actually virtually all their discography) are written/produced by Teddy Park and his team, at their YG Entertainment Sub-Label, The Black Label. Teddy is the main producer for the YG label, and has produced many hits for the various artists at YG. It’s not easy to produce a Kpop group, because during production, they have to keep in mind a global audience, design songs that fit the talents of the 4 girls strengths, equally distribute the lines/each as best possible, and keep the BP vibe, and can also fit translations into Japanese. If you watch the Japanese versions of their MV’s they Rap in English! And it’s even more BadAss! They often mix genres in 1 song, with EDM, Hiphop, Pop and other influences. Teddy likes to use exotic instrument/melody loops, with Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern sounds (string, flute-like) sprinkled in the songs (also increases penetration in large markets like India, China, etc). The girls have done some writing, but most songs are in a queue of possibilities, that Teddy works with the girls to flesh it out. Choreography is often done in the US, then YG picks the best moves to fit the concept of each song and makes final choreo, working with YGX dancers, too, particularly for live stage choreos. MV’s are highly produced with talented specialists directors, and bringing a BP song to market with an MV can cost over a million USD. The songs aren’t as popular or have full MV’s, but BP has done collabs with global female soloist stars Dua Lipa, Lady Gaga, Cardi B, and an MV last summer with Selena Gomez “Ice Cream”. They are all brand ambassadors for Luxury International Brands like Chanel, Celine, Dior, Saint Laurent, Bulgari and Tiffany, to name a few., and they have all been to Paris Fashion weeks.

Just a few notes: Only MV to use CGI/green screen. Jisoo did the whistling part and Jennie is actually considered the main rapper of the group because she has "more" skill at it. This is not to diminish just how great of a rapper Lisa is. She has swag, but Jennie generally has better flow and is faster.

Yeah, so I'd just like to set the record straight. There are a LOT of Lisa and Jennie fans who have created their own reality, mostly based on erroneous comments made by other Lisa/Jennie fans. Lisa has not written any lyrics/raps except for the rap verse that they added to their cover of SURE THING by Miguel, she's also credited as a co-writer on the DJ Snake project "SG (Sexy Girl). Teddy Park has written all of their material and should be properly recognized. Unfortunately, the largest percentage of BLINKS are younger teens, mostly girls, who put their bias on a pedestal and create a fictional story which other fans are more than willing to believe.
That being said, Jennie has mentioned in an interview that during the recording of a song they may suggest a different pronunciation or emphasis on a lyric, but not to the extent that hey would get credited for writing or producing the song.
I think you don't know the context of everything either, because nobody brags too much, it is known that although Lisa is not accredited, she wrote her rap in aiiyl, she said it in an interview, in a magazine, it was also known that in lthm the producer himself said that Lisa helped co-write the rap with danny chung, wrote her rap on the cover say so and she is credited, and also wrote her rap on so hot remix, YG is the one who doesn't credit the girls as they know they deserve, because to be in YG as a trainne, you not only have to know how to dance, rap, sing, but also write, compose, etc.

Teddy is the chief producer. But he hasn't "written all of their material". On most songs, there is a team of several people working on the song. As chief producer, Teddy gets involved in all aspects and shares credits. But he isn't the sole writer.

This song get s slept on. It was my favorite song of theirs until "Lovesick Girls". Hard to believe that: a) it was one of their debut tracks, and; b) their company tried to talk them out of releasing it.
The transitions are smooth AF, and they shouldn't work, but somehow they still do. The production on this song is impeccable - just a masterful job of mixing and knowing when to add/remove instrumentation. Such a vibe. Also, the only MV of theirs that uses green screen.
But the real take away is how much swag and charisma they had right out of the gate. Their confidence and camera presence is unreal. Fire. Pure fire.

WHISTLE was their debut track that put them on the map. It broke the record for the fastest that a new artist hit Number One in the charts, after only thirteen days. In their Netflix doc Teddy Park, their writer/producer said "...we almost didn't release WHISTLE as a debut song, most people at the company were against because it's super minimal and has this weird Country vibe."

(You can check the official Blackpink Debut Showcase to confirm this and also go to YG's official website to confirm that YG has never assigned any "main" or "lead" rapper position.) Some fans think Jennie's the "main rapper" because some fans in 2016 made up a fake list of "main" and "lead" position ranks that they repeated all over social media and lazy Kpop media started repeating it too. It was never from YG. It has never been confirmed by YG. Even Melon and Kprofiles don't claim that the "main" and "lead" labels are from YG. Plus it's really dumb. There literally is no reason why YG would label Jisoo or Lisa as "seconds" in their specialty areas. There is no ranking of the members in their specialties. Fans are free to prefer whomever they like the most. But it's not official and the dumb "main rapper is better than lead rapper" stuff is just made up nonsense.
