I’m in my 30s and I went to catholic school since elementary. We didn’t get physical punishment cause that was banned years ago. But they did used to use pretty intense physical punishment for years. At least until the 70s, maybe even the 80s. Most cases I heard were getting slapped with the ruler on the back of the hands then standing in the corner for the rest of the lesson. but I’ve heard stories of other schools where they genuinely beat up kids. So glad that stuff ended before I got there. lol.
I went to Catholic School 1st-5th grades way back in the late 50s. I remember being on the wrong end of a yard stick a few times. Some of those times I just happened to be in the area where mischief was being done. I also remember another Nun that was a dead shot with an eraser. She never got the wrong kid. Now... I've watched the set. I never saw anything as viscous as described. I have waited outside the class with two others and stuff like that but not to be beaten to a pulp.
Uncle Joey is a mad man lol. He has so many funny stories from his life and childhood. There was even a guy that wrote a book on the Cuban mafia in the USA and Joey's mom was semi involved at a very low level, but Joey grew up around some big name people as a kid. The author of the book was on joe Rogan explaining how he had done all this research and then met Joey and talked about it with him and was shocked that Joey knew all the people and details and had been around them as a kid. just a wild life for sure. The fact the introbis so high budget is that when the show was pitched they made it seem like each story would be animated/acted out. Not that it'd just be a stand up on stage. So when they got the money they had to use it hence the intense cinematic intros lol
As a guy who was raised white evangelical and abused by my father, I completely identify with this. It's not just Catholics who are abusive. Religion can give people a lot of comfort, but it can also justify a lot of horrible, inhumane things. Listening to this makes me laugh, but I can't say it doesn't bring back memories. This isn't just "old school catholicism." It's modern evangelical Christianity in many ways. The more I hear stories like the Duggar Family, I know I'm not alone. They come off as just weird, awkward, conservative people on the outside, but on the inside, it's terrifying.

So in 5th grade we all had to wear uniforms (1st grade through 8th grade, and dress shirts and ties in high school), and I wanted to know what the girls were wearing under their skirts. I must have telegraphed my thoughts, because as my hand reached down to lift up the girl's skit to see her bottom my head was yanked so hard backwards moving me away rapidly. The girl turned instantly hearing my screams of pain from the nun who monitored the play ground. I got two licks of a paddle, and had to apologize to the girl even tho she didn't know what had occurred.
The fact that he told about the closet, and the phone call about the kid dying of pneumonia... look up the residential schools in Canada and the corresponding catholic schools in the US... there's literally thousands, if not tens of thousands of first nations children that never went home. The ones that did... permanently scarred and traumatized. Same thing in Ireland, And it's still happening to this day
yes 100%, catholic schools back in the 70's were insane, but as parents started entering the 80's and 90's they quickly pulled their kids out of that environment
I went to public schools but my siblings who were a decade older than me went to Catholic Schools until my mum had a falling out with the local Catholic School. My sister and her best friend were looking at flowers in the garden of the nunnery. They weren't picking them just looking they thought they looked pretty. Now thing was kids weren't allowed in the garden. A nun saw them and beat them with a paddle and made them sign the paddle. Well when my sister got home my mum could see she was distraught so she asked what was wrong and my sister told her what happened. Next day my mum went with my sister to school the school was only 5 minutes from our house. When she got there she asked the nun of what my sister said was true and the nun replied yes. So my mum asked to see the paddle that was used and the nun agreed and handed it to my mum who then proceeded to throw the nun over her own desk and beat her with the paddle in front of the class and as the cherry on top made her sign it. The father came down yelled my mum she couldn't do that to which my mother replied he better keep his mouth shut or his ass was getting a whooping next. She then told him she never gave permission for them to beat her kids and by the next Monday morning her kids will be enrolled in the public school.
my mom was born in the 50's and went to catholic school she said they beat their knuckles with rulers, I told her if she sent me I'd be in jail within a few days because I wouldn't stand for it.
My Mom, who was left handed, went to one and she told us that the nuns would make her write with the right hand. If they saw her use her left hand they would smack her with a ruler. It got to the point were they would strap her left hand to her side so she wouldn't write with it.
Joey used to tour with a incredibly funny guy by the name Ralphie Meay😮 who. You need to watch some of his videos. He 🎉pushed the limits of what people would agree that was funny. Just like all great comedians do.
My mom born in the 50s was put in a Catholic orphanage by her parents, with her little sister. She was there between 5 and 10 years old. All the little girls without parents had an ugly square haircut. At night, the nuns would come to pick up little girls from the dormitory, bring them in the bathrooms and you would hear them screaming. Sometimes the nuns would bring them in their bedrooms. My mom and her sister were the rare ones to never been beaten and had long hair. But they were psychology abused, like forced to eat big plates of food they specifically didn't like. My mom starting eating the skin of off her lips from stress, and they would put a band-aid on her mouth to humiliate her and stop her from doing it. Over here in Canada, the Christian (both Catholic and Protestant) pensionary for First Nations closed in the 80s, and there were still horrors going on. There's a lot of them buried in mass graves under the buildings.
