One of his old classmates actually posted pictures from this trip and confirmed the story. Also, the movie Van Wilder is loosely based on Bert's life in his college days.
There's also an addition to the story where he parties with the cops until they're to drunk to drive so they tell Bert to drive and when Bert asks isn't that illegal the cop says to him who's going to stop you, we are the cops
This story was confirmed to be true, the film Van Wilder was even inspired to his life story. P.S: Bert in an interview said that partying with the cops was even scarier than partying with the mafia.
I've been trying to find that interview where he talks about partying with the cops (I've seen it referenced in comments but I've never seen the actual interview)... Can post a link to it or tell me the name of the interview where he talks about it?
Bert is easily one of the best story telling comedians. As others already said the story was confirmed by classmates to be true. One of the other stories that always makes me cry laughing from him is when he wrestled a bear.
this guy is a medical marvel... he drinks like a fish while being a pretty solid athlete.. dude ran a marathon in 5:15 without training for it.... Quote from Joe Rogan "Bert would be an elite level athlete if he wasn't such a drunk"... dude legit passed up minor league contract cause he figure " yeah I won't be able to party if I do that"
This guy's partying is legendary! I was attending the University of Michigan during the time he was at Florida State! No one on our campus actually knew him, but, we all knew of him!
The way he presents the last punchline is genius. Like as a listener, you're so engrossed in the story that you when you hear the part about the police, you get so worried for him, scompletely forgetting that the mob runs the entire country back then including the police, so of course he wouldn't get in trouble.
Bert has a story about wrestling a grizzly bear. Skydiving with Rachel Ray. He has a couple about his youngest daughter who has some minor learning disabilities. All of Bert's stories are true, and funny AF.
Bert is an animal!!!! Guy decides he’s going to run the LA marathon, Joe Rogan asked him is he going to train, Bert says no. Joe had no faith and him and to everybody surprise Bert DID DAT SHIT!!!!!!😂🤣😂🤣🤣🤣😂
Before this story became famous Bert posted about it. It was so crazy I was like can't be true. Then his old classmates commented "yes it's true, he robbed us." There's even pics of him with the gangsters. Also my dad visited Russia in 96 and he confirmed the mob really did run everything. Craziest part of the story is Bert is still alive, but I think being a young foreigner good at drinking meant they wanted to party with him not kill him!
I'm not surprised he's still alive, to be honest. Russian gangsters have a different mode of thought. I have a friend who was a missionary in Russia. She, along with a few college students ducked into what they thought was an empty building in the midst of a sudden rain storm. However, there were several men standing face-to-face in trench coats with bulges underneath. She looked at the closest guy and said (in Russian), "We shouldn't be here, should we?" He shakes his head. "Nyet." Then offers her and the students the chance to leave. They couldn't get out of there fast enough. Perhaps, the old mafia gangsters . . . back when they were from the Old Country, were much the same. But it's pretty different than how we have come to think about such groups today.
I’ve seen this clip so many times, and no matter how many times i see/hear this routine, it never gets old. Its still funny every single time. I love it!
The fact that his teachers, classmates, some of the gangsters, some of the cops, and locals that heard the stories of “the machine” all collaborated this is amazing
I have watched all of his specials, and finally had the opportunity to see him live. Your stomach will hurt from laughing when you see him. His delivery is superb. You should watch Brad Williams next. He's another great.
Brad Williams used to be part of a morning radio show (Kevin Kline Live) in San Francisco in the early 2010's. I lived off that show while driving to Sonoma State in the morning, and was so bummed when they fired him. His specials are so, so funny!
The movie "Van Wilder" was based on Berts experiences in college captured from an article in Rolling Stone magazine. The actual story you just watched will debut in movie theaters on May 25th, 2023. This is how absolutely iconic this guy was in the early 90's in college. BTW he doesn't wear a shirt because he hated the sweat circles he got under the hot lights.
The stories are all at least 90% true. Bert is just naturally hilarious. I've seen him a few times on a podcast with Joe Rogan where he got them laughing so hard they couldn't breath. And that was just from recounting his daily life!
When he mentioned like being an immigrant in the DMV, his facial expressions and finger motions are so well done and hilarious. You missed them though cause you laughed then cleared your eyes
Woman, you are a bright light, an intelligent, beautiful spirit. You totally understood the comedy ride he took you on (every step of the way). It is refreshing to find people who are very quick-witted with a great personality and sense of humor. Rare. I have seen a number of channels react to this and they enjoyed it also, but I just watched one channel with some snob on it and he totally would rather sneer than smile. So he was quite the downer... but coming to this channel has lifted me back up again. Thanks & Peace! ✌
Yes!!! Its true.. he had pictures... he told the whole story on a talk show back in the day.. In our history you have those rare people that live interesting lives.. he one of them... the 90s was such a great time to experience life. I miss it!!!!
this story is true i went to Florida state during this time. While i didn't know Burt it was a pretty epic story around campus. The first half of the trip went so well for the students (minus being robbed, lol) that the teachers actually had a meeting and told Burt he had to keep parting with the mob on there way back from Moscow. Burt also later reveled that the scariest point of the trip for him was when he was parting with the cops. They made the mob seem tame. Florida State during the 90's was nutz and one HUGE party. Only thing I majored in was my blood alcohol level.
he made a movie about this. coming soon. its called the machine. he originally told this story on joe rogans podcast over a decade ago when joe was still filming in his basement. hes worked on how to tell the story alot. ive also heard theres a 2nd part that goes more into the other things that happened on that trip, including the boat heist.
I speak Russian, have a few things to share. First, he tells the story different each time. He's gotten in a little bit of trouble for some of the inaccuracies and was possibly complicit in some other crimes too, woops! Basically, the story is probably even better than he tells it. xD So the first time he dreams up his introduction and says "Ya rabotayu koshka", this is immediately ridiculous and hilarious. It literally means "I. Am working. Cat." When he actually opens the door he tries to say "I AM A MAN" - Ya Muschina. Instead he says - Ya MACHINA - Which you would initially understand as "I am a car." xD A foreign kid, knocking on your door with alcohol, yelling "I AM A CAR" when you know he's trying to say "I AM A MAN", is one of the funniest possible things in Russian, I would've laughed my ass off all day and all night if he busted in and said that. Technically, yeah, Machina means "machine", but they probably didn't take it that way the first time.
I've honestly been waiting to see this thumbnail of Britt reacting to this specific Bert Kreisher clip. This was my introduction to him. Maybe that's why I liked it so much. With his casual shirtlessness and timing that rocks, I think it's one of his best!
I love when Comedians or actors break. I saw Bert live recently and one of his stories u could barely understand bc he couldn't stop laughing as he told it 😂

Bert went in 1995, I went in 1997 and trust me, the whole paying off the mafia is very real. I have nothing funny like Bert, but we did have one mafia incident that I will never forget. Just as quick as the mafia guys were when they sprang into action, they sat back down away from us like nothing happened. There were no other incidents before or after that on our trip.
