According to writer and director Andrew Niccol, the filmmakers worked with actual gunrunners in the making of this movie. The tanks lined up for sale were real, and belonged to a Czech arms dealer, who had to have them back to sell to another country. They used a real stockpile of over three thousand AK-47s, because it was cheaper than getting prop guns.
It wasn't really AK-47s It was a different type of rifle that looked similar but still
@@RabidNemo yup they were Czech VZ-58's
I watched this movie probably half a dozen times it it was just so fascinating and I think in the commentary they said that they actually had like weapons inspectors from nato come down because they could see all the tanks from satellite and they got worried.
crazy world we live in...
@@PACKERMAN2077from what I remember the directors commentary, was filming that scene when the real gun runner called him saying he needed them back cause they were sold
Nick Cage suffers from not being selective enough about the movies he does, but when he hits the mark, boy does he hit the mark. And this one certainly is one of those movies.
TBF he took any movie due to his IRS tax bill lol
"It's so easy even a child can use it, and they do."
Great movie, and another great reaction Dawg.
@TLM no one is gonna read that weirdo.
@Miles Doyle xdxdxdxd
This movie is highly underrated, it only made $24 million domestic but it definitely deserved a wider audience
i like how at the end of the movie they let you know that it was based on a true story and not in the beginning of the movie like other movies do
I viewed this film within the last year and I was very impressed by the story and in how realistic it probably was in its presentation. Kudos to the screen writer, the Director, and to Nicholas Cage.
The screenwritier and director are the same person in this case, Andrew Niccol. Who also did Gattaca, The Truman Show and In Time.
One of my most favorite Nick Cage films without a doubt! Just a few others (from his 120+ filmography) that I quite like are: "Raising Arizona" (1987), "Red Rock West" (1993), "Snake Eyes" (1998), "8mm" (1999), "Bringing Out The Dead" (1999), "Adaptation" (2002), "Matchstick Men" (2003) and "The Weather Man" (2005).
Ooh, yes, I feel Matchstick Men, Snake Eyes, and Bringing Out the Dead in particular don't get nearly enough love.
You forgot his greatest, ConAir
@TLM I haven't seen this Gage movie???
Ummm that was a joke!
Would not recommend watching 8mm as 13 year old.
This is by far, the most underrated, unknown films ever put out by Nicholas Cage. It's definitely my favorite film from him. Brilliant.
Cough cough ConAir
@@myview5840 When it comes to his "best" films, I would also add "The Rock" and "Raising Arizona" as well. But most of us have seen those films. This film however is among the most underrated and unknown (unseen) Cage films.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and your reaction. This movie is a terrific portrayal of duality. There are several dilemmas of having to choose between which option is the lesser of two evils and making choices but asking "at what cost?"
Devin, What do you have to understand about Yuri's wife. She never asked about where the money came from until she found out where the money came from. ---------- She tells you why she had to bring down Yuri and become the one weapon that could stop him in his tracks. ----------- She failed at being a model, she failed at being an artist, she's failed at being a wife and mother. --------- But she couldn't fail at being a human being. -------- PArt of being a human is trying to ease the suffering of others. -------- When you are perpetrating that suffering or an accomplice to it you have to make your greatest effort to stop it. -------- Thus she had to try to stop Yuri.
Yup, Yuri fails the same test when his brother dies. His wife thinks that "Evil prevails when good men fail to act" and Yuri's view is that, "evil prevails"
Unfortunattly, all of her effort to save her husband from hell is vain right after uncle Afica said " Afica need you"🤣
This is one of the best! Glad you did it. That last interview scene........ damn! Knock on the door had my heart in my ankles! lol
Nic Cage's speech in that scene was incredible. Shame he picks so many bad scripts, because he's incredibly talented with the right director.
@@jculver1674 he needed the money so he made an assload of crappy movies
Those tanks were a literal arms dealer arsenal, not cgi lol
Congratulations! You're the second RUclips reactor that has reacted to this film. Great reaction bro! 👍
- *PRIMAL FEAR (1996)*
- *PRISONERS (2013)*
- *GONE GIRL (2014)*
- *WIND RIVER (2017)*
- *CATCH ME IF YOU CAN (2002)*
🔥🔥🔥🤷🏻♂️😂
Primal Fear. Yes.
Fire list
Great stuff. That interrogation scene is so perfect, and probably the reality of the business.
This movie is so good and delivers deep messages about the nature of Government.
Devin! What’s up brother. Trust your boy!
👉 “A FEW GOOD MEN” (1993) 💯✊🙏🇺🇸
I haven’t watch the review yet, but I am so excited to watch it just because watching your videos it’s like I’m watching the movie all over again and I’m getting the reactions like I had when I first watched it. I’m super stoked for this review.
Haven’t even looked at comments yet…Remember 2 things people. 1, don’t forget who Yuri is just what he is (evil). 2, this is is a great movie😉
Only legends do reaction to this movie!
Amazing movie.
Those piles of guns they show in Beirut, are real. The director found out that ordering 3,000 real guns from the local area was so much cheaper than importing prop guns from the states, they had to buy real guns. They had them destroyed afterwards. Some of the tanks they borrowed for filming, actually had a time limit to be returned because they were being sold to Libya.
What I love most about Yuri's character, is his reasoning... "Because I'm good at it"
“Thank you. But I like it better my way.” Classic
Finally, I have found someone reacting to this gem, it is my favourite movie and Nicolas Cage really nailed his role. The filmography is really well done here as well.
One of the most underrated and completely forgotten movies out there.
This is a cold piece I bought this movie awhile back, you are the only one who has reacted to this film. Thank you
Check out, "Air America", with To Cruise. another true story... very good movie!
The speech once Ethan hawke catches him is so straight facts. I’ll be released because your bosses are my customers. Damn
Devin, you have to watch The 5th Element with Bruce Willis, that movie takes you on a helluva good ride!
Highly undrated movie
Fuck yeah!!!
And Bruce Willis just had his retirement announced too. For health reasons. Something like dementia and really easy to forget your lines.
@@elischultes6587 Yeah I heard that, it is something like Dementia, says it has an underlying cause, but they have not shared that yet.
This is a great movie. Nobody ever asks questions about all of the wars that happened in Africa during the mid to late 1990's. Let alone where did all of the weapons come from.
Really makes ya wonder. All the guns in the world yet they still murder a million with machetes. Do the guns even matter then?
Without talking melee in ancient history... another was super recent at the India/Chinese border, a skirmish that nobody wants to hear of. Stick and stones, man. Sleeping in the mountains. No guns because that can easily make everything hot and nobody wants another world war. A shot fired or sending back up then nobody coulda ignored it. I'm just glad they sent the Chinese packing. Who knows why the Chinese testing their resolve like that. Probably just the old claim of some of India, Korea and Japan as ancient lost property. lol
*TRIVIA* Because there was no cooperation with the US military or American studios, this film was independently made, with production based in South Africa. The cost of prop guns was more than the price tag of real guns, so 3000 real AK47s were purchased, and 50 tanks were hired from real arms dealers for the production. Purchases were sold back at a discount. The Russian Antonov plane was also hired from an arms dealer. It crashed soon after production, killing everyone on board. 'Colonel Southern' was a nod to the dubious 'Colonel Oliver North' who was implicated in the illegal sale of weapons in Iran. The character of Colonel Southern is voiced by Donald Sutherland.
One of the greatest movie openings of all time, love your reactions man and bring that dub home … good luck on the prank war !!
Two men become arms dealers. Half of one survives.
I absolutely love this movie. Seen it many time. Keep up the great content
YEE! Love nic cage! Under appreciated to me! Love this movie too. I already know u gonna fw it!
Love your reactions brotha. Keep up the good work. GRIND NEVER STOPS!!
“Maybe doing nothing is better than doing this.”
Facts
Thanks for reviewing this movie, definitely slept on and underrated
one of my all time favorite movies.
A Bronx tail. Do the one with your lady. Always great stuff bro. If I don't watch your video it's just because I haven't seen the movie. Keep it up
You should react to war dogs with Jonah hill. It's about selling weapons
And he is free now :D
Devin just a few recommendations
1.)Frailty - matthew mcconaughey
2.)The Last Castle - Robert Redford
3.)Olympus has fallen - Gerard Butler
4.) Good Will Hunting - Matt Damon, Robin Williams
5.) Boondocks Saints
6.) Armageddon - Bruce Willis, Ben Afleck, Billy Bob Thornton, Owen Wilson, Steve Buscemmi, Michael Clark Duncan.
7.) paycheck - Ben Afleck
8.) Pearl Harbor - Ben Afleck, Josh Harnett, Kate Beckinsale.
Just a few you haven’t done yet.
Oh and you might want to check out some Liam Neeson and Jason Stathom if you like Action. Liam Neeson - Rob Roy, Next of Kin, Taken, Honest Thief Jason Stathom - Snatch (Brad Pitt and Jason Stathom) wrath of man, Mechanic, The expendable, etc… gotta get these action movies :)
Fun Fact: There is a Czech weapons seller who has 80 T72 MBTs in his offer.
The most fucked up thing is hes do it illegaly. But the weapons manufactures sell weapons to everyone but its legal. Because yeah countrys and manufactures need money.
What's even more fucked is that gunrunning isn't illegal, provided you do it exactly as the laws state.
Lord of War is (loosely) based on a real life Russian Arms dealer. Other characters included were borrowed from real life (the Marine Colonel Southern was a play on the name of LtCol North. Oliver North was involved in the Iran Contra Scandal back in the 1980s). The most probable source for the inspiration of the Russian Arms dealer was a man named Viktor Bout.
You already know I'm excited for this one, been asking for it for what, 5, 6 months now, something like that. Already know you liked it, what's not to like? Good story(loosely based on true events), great performances, lots of quotable lines. Thank you for reacting to this classic, probably one of my top 3 Nic Cage movies. Now I need a new movie to stay on your butt about, and I already know what it will be:
Road to Perdition (2002) starring Tom Hanks, positive you'd enjoy it, has everything you seem to like in movies. Cheers!!! You the man, Mr. G!!!😁
Oh "ROad to PErdition" is fire. Another one you should check out is Deja Vu (Denzel Washinton) I watched it the other day an forgot how much I liked it.
I believe it's based on a true story. Not 100% sure. I DO know that this is Nick's best performance. 👌
American Me is an amazingly powerful/tough movie to get through, but it shows some of the realities of mafia life
His wife didn't want to stay with someone responsible for mass murder. It's one thing to suspect someone of illegal activities, quite another to know they contribute to the deaths of thousands of innocent women and children. Both his wife and his brother did the right thing in the end.
"Face Off" with Nicholas Cage and John Travolta is a great movie you should do a reaction on it.Its crazy!
Raising ARIZONA my favorite CAGE movie, but this movie is underatted
I forgot how good this movie was!
Please watch Backdraft starring Kurt Russell. I promise you will thank me.
Love your reviews sir! Subbed just because you seem like a cool dude. Keep it up!
I have always felt this movie should be required viewing.
As a VERY avid gun collector, his line about the AK platform is fucking GOSPEL😆
Yeah. That rock ended his "going straight " days.
This was a wonderful movie and yes you followed it perfectly!
I love Andy so much, what a great character.
Awesome movie
21:00 i kinda agree with you here. to come un anounce mean silent treat to his life/family. since he didn't tell them his address only mean they investigate him.
please check out No One Lives (2012) and Upgrade (2018)
they're overlooked and underrated gems you shouldnt miss out on. im real sure you're gonna like em.
lol Seeing then name Upgrade I'm reminded of the pimp from Idiocracy.
Of course she knew. She just didn't want to acknowledge it.
you should watch WAR DOGS next ) very similar and also based on true story
Another favorite. You're always hitting it out of the park.
Devin you should definitely check out War Dogs if you liked this
Literally anything can be excused with if it wasn’t me it would just be someone else it’s not a good argument at all
It's a heavy movie man--one of those flicks that makes you have to stop and think about stuff. Part of why I like it.
Awesome movie and I like your videos
What a twist at the end, well, an expected twist. Conspiracy twist?
I've always liked this movie.
If you’re doing some Nic Cage movies, I’d recommend:
1. National Treasure 1 & 2
2. Bangkok Dangerous
3. 8mm
Ok bruh bruh you got a winner here I been telling you do it lol 💯💪🏾👍🏾
Before shooting the scene where tanks were lined up for sale, the filmmakers had to warn N.A.T.O., lest they thought a real war was being started when they saw satellite images of the set.
I liked your reaction. I've seen this movie a couple of times. I like how it shows the power of money and if you put enough zero,s after a number people will look the other way. That to me is the reality of situation like this. People alway say how could one be get mixed up in things like arms drugs. It's simple enough money can make everything OK . that's how it is in real life
When they were staging all the tanks for filming, they had to inform nato what was going on. From satellite imagery it looked they were preparing for a military operation.
in my opinion this is Cage's BEST movie ever
Oh I know you loved it
This was 🔥
This movie is a classic man 👍
This was loosely based on real events and the man at the end of the movie who gets him out is supposed to be Ollie North
Falling Down- Michael Douglas-reaction
Have you seen John Q? I would love to see that reaction.
LOVE Jared Leto in this
Really good movie and also the story behind the movie. 👍 Ranking, 9. Killer.
One of Nicholas Cage's best movies is Bad Lieutenant. It's not well known but a cult classic of sorts.
Devin check out a few good man 1993
Its coming i am a patreon
Nice reaction, can't believe you skipped the intro though lol
Love how you break them down afterwards! You see alot that some dont!
Any woman who gets mad at your for being more into the Cold War ending than a kids first walk isn’t a keeper
You should check out "American Made" with Tom Cruise. It's about how the US basically started the Columbia drug trade.
The film is based on the accounts of real international arms dealers, and, in fact, the newspaper clippings shown in the film, are real.
Hell yeah! Glad you watched this.😁
Should check out War dogs. Similar kind of theme, but more humour. You'd like it.
This film based loosely on a true story as Nick Cage plays an arms dealer whom wants to make big business, while at the same time, a federal agent is on his trail, willing to do everything he can to put him behind bars.
Yup, 'Viktor Bout' currently being held in the U.S., I remember when he was on the news years ago when he got arrested in Thailand in 2008 but didn't know what happened till I just looked him up just now.
Well done 🇨🇦🤘🤠🤘🏾🇺🇸
Speaking of war-
“ZULU”
There is no other film like it.
Trust me
You gotta do “gone in 60 seconds” “face off” “con air”
Got it on disk...n it's one of me fans.. lol ya goofy m8te from Australia
Awesome Film
Good pick. You've got a rabbit hole of Nick Cage movies to explore. I'd check out Raising Arizona. But, Faceoff is also vintage cheese. So-bad-it's-good. Conair is the same, it's SO corny and bad, and I've seen it 10 times because it's great. Cage has tons of those movies terrible movies that are so good.
He's done both Face-Off and Con Air already!😁
@@geddistopholes6785 What?! Don't know how I missed those. Nice to see him doing the good NC movies.
Yo Devin! Please lower the volume for the movie or raise the volume for your mic. when I have the movie at a good volume I can barely hear you. there is way too much of a difference in volume. thank you for the vids
This was a real dope movie. It was my first time watching it, if my memory serves me correctly.
Staying with the theme of arms dealing you should check out War Dogs with Jonah Hill.
