Minutes played per game should have been included in the stats of the "defensive player of the year candidates." It will show that wemby did those numbers even though his play time were restricted most of the season.

You put a bunch of normies that arent in the NBA plus Wemby.
He plays 30' a.night. The other 18 another random normie 5-11' replaces him.
His plus Minus is insane. The best ever. When he plays, the team sucks. When he doesnt the team sucks WAAAAAY MORE. Number its like -175 per possession.

@@Edd-zd5wb You make a very popular error. A bench warmer in NBA is still in ~top 500 basketball players at the moment. Brian Scalabrini case and quote "I am closer to Kobe than you are to me".
And another example of your error: you do not place Wemby on the floor when taking guard out. Spurs have 3 more players 6'10"+ tall. So you replace a forward/center with him.
So there is a huge difference with Victor on/off the court. And this stat alone is not enough, but all defensive stats shows player shoot worse when he is around. Blocks are good, I like blocks, but they don't tell the whole story. Blocks + deflections + difference in efficiency when guarded by X player and guarded by others say a lot. And in this category Victory is an A class defender.

      1. OK.
      2. Then term "faulty logic" should not exist. Yet it does. Your logical error is that you think a bench player in NBA suck, which is wrong. They are elite athletes, significantly worse than top of the league, but skies above Average Joe. If someone is staying in NBA (not some random 10day contract dude, fresh rookie or Thanasis Antetokoumpo :) ) then he is representing at least some level od decency.
      3. This is dPoy - PLAYER award. if individual stats show huge difference why shouldn't it be taken into consideration? And this stat in 80's and 90's was often based on basic stats and eye test, which promoted individual accomplishments. Not sure it affected significance of the award then..

Time on the floor is both the pros and cons for Wemby's case of DPOY. It's an adventage sine he is so efficient to create the statistics with so little time. But, it's also a disadvantage since the other contenders have provide their defense much more minutes per game than Wemby have had in a year. People, don´t let the Hype Blind you. If you check the last ten years of DPOY award, they winners are always Top3 (rarely Top5) Defensive Rating. Gobert has the Best defensive Rating, Wemby being the second. Minnesota has the Best Defensive Rating, San Antonio is 22th. You can argue the 30 min restriction, but in Defensive Rating in 100 possessions the values are the same (RG 1st, VW 2nd). You are saying that defensive player of the year is not related with the Team overall defensive performance, but the Data says the opposite.
Exactly the same happens with the MVP. Only 3 players won it in teams with less than 50 victories in 48 seasons (one being Mr Triple Double Westbrook, Moses Malone X2 and Nikola Jokic).

Same argument can be made for the MVP, but it doesn’t work that way.
You have to WIN to show that your defense actually translates to winning games and being important.

Wemby if is just transformational in the way that Wilt or Kareem was. His length simply changes the dimension of the court. If he doesn't win DPOY this year he might not ever win one, that's just how it goes but with that being said, he definitely does to be the DPOY and if he doesn't win the award loses major credibility from here on out.

It's so weird to see that Wemby is definitely a hell of a defensive player yet some of the elite players playing against him have scored alot against him/Spurs and he's such a good all around player yet they have only 20 or so wins in the season. It's like he didn't shut anyone down points wise and the team didn't improve significantly in win totals after he joined the team, yet he's the real deal, it's just a strange kind of feeling. it's all just a big experiment with all the players around him now.
