KTM Duke 790 vs Husqvarna Svartpilen 701: What is more fun?

- Short motorcycle vlog and review done with my friend Juliane from RUclips channel @ridenroll.juliane. We picked up motorcycles from local dealer valsebike.com/ and enjoyed on these FUN machines the Gran Canaria. I try to spend on Gran Canaria 3-4 months every year as I just think, this is one of the best place to ride motorcycle in Europe. Especially cause you can ride here all year long.
In this video I tried to sort out on which bike I feel more emotions. Wether on somewhat high-tech super agile, fast and precise KTM Duke 790 or stylish, super light, technically less advanced Husqvarna Svartpilen 701 with outgoing single cylinder engine.
There is an interesting debate about development of motorcycles, which are getting so much uniform and similar. More and more manufacturers tends to prefer twin cylinder, DOHC, watercooled engine (BMW F900, Aprilia Tuono 660, Yamaha MT-07, Suzuki is just developing twin as replacement for SV650 - what a pity!, Honda CRF1100 which is not DOHC but you get the point) and although this architecture make sense, decent power/torque, less vibrations and ride comfort, there are just less and less alternatives on the market. And yet, briliant 693 cc single cylinder of KTM firstly disappeared from Duke 690 and next year there is also no Husqvarna Svartpilen 701 anymore. Because of emissions and probably lack of demand = too small market to invest in new emission EU5 standards. I don't know. But it is a big lose for us who loves something different than mainstream. Svartpilen 701 is different and as from FUN point of view, it is a winner for me. Is it the right bike for commuting and simply living with? For most of people not I guess. But ...

What made you decide on the Svartpilen over the Vitpilen?
@@europeanlegend9347 Mainly riding position. I am using it some days for my hour long commute and plan on some longer rides this summer so arm fatigue was a factor. Nice thing is, I can still get down and drag my knee if I want to with the Svart but if I just want to relax, the semi upright position is good for that too. I test rode both and don't feel like I compromised one bit.
@@KDad514 how is the reliability so far? Have heard some people complain about clutch and gas tank issues?
@@blob2092 I tried to get ahead of the clutch slave issue by ordering an Oberon at about 2200 miles but the stock slave failed before I got the new one. The only time it has left me stranded. Fortunately I was only a mile from home so my son came with my truck and ramp to rescue me. Dealer installed the Oberon for me under the warranty. Knock on wood, no issues with tank so far. I have 6400+ miles on it already and it goes in next weekend for it's first schedules maintenance after the break in service. They will check valve clearances and all the listed scheduled service plus look into an annoying glitch with the CAN/ABS module. I installed the Rottweiler fuel dongle to clean up the low rpm throttle and the thing runs like a champ. Burns no oil and generally gets 55-58 miles to the gallon. Couldn't be happier with the bike so far. My only complaint is their choice in stock tires. The pirelli MT60RSs are garbage and only made it to 5000 miles.
@@KDad514 Thanks for your reply! Seems like a good idea to install the Oberon as a preemptive measure, rather than having to wait for the inevitable… I’m happy the bike is working for you now though!

Few yrs back i had a chance to test out my friends 701 supermoto, the power is great, never had a disappointment everytime u twist the throttle. 790 is so much better due to it's electronic things, you will never need to worried that you're twisting the throttle too much and got highslide or wheelie. 790 is currently my dream bike.
Anyways, nice vids and i hope i have chance to test out the new svartpilen 701 too.

Great review, always for me is comparing that range of bikes. I love big singles, and still have a TDM900 that I can't part with as it's such a good all-rounder (and the grand father to all the new 270deg parallel twins). The 701 I would like to have a ride on, thanks for sharing your video.

I actually got my motorcycle license on a 790 Duke and recently bought a 401 Svartpilen for around town. I really love the one-cylinder feel, and if I had the choice would go for the 701 over the Duke. So, much that I am thinking about getting the 701 Svartpilen in the Spring.
What are your thoughts on the Offroad capabilities of the 701? Nothing crazy but rocky, dirt paths maybe even some sand near beaches?
Or, should I go for a Ducati Desert Sled, rather than a 701 Svartpilen? But, that thing weighs a ton.
Anybody out there that knows both bikes very well?

Nice comparo! I own a 2019 Svartpilen 701 and if I total it I would buy a new one. I'm seriously considering grabbing another one if Husqvarna discontinues it. The bike has a few flaws, of course, but oh man is it fun. The nimbleness of that thing is absurd!

Great vid. Nice job Jindro. Maybe little suggestion as I suffer from it as well and this is my long term goal for improving my english - unfortunately we in central europe suffer quite a bit from our slavic intonation and pronunciation. Don't take it bad, great vid, technically nothing wrong, just keep going as you are getting better and better, but with more british sounding english your vids would receive attention they deserve imo :-)
Hey Jintao. Great communication skills shown. Your pronunciation and accent never got in the way of meaning . A few interesting vocab choices and a few articles missed just made it all the more charming. I've been teaching efl/ esl for near on 30 years. You are a 🌟

@@konstyantyngarkusha2733 thanks! Sadly my slave clutch cylinder literally went out at 50 miles. Pretty bummed but getting it replaced with an oberon in a week.
It would be cool to have Svartpilens with a twin engine.
Don't need it. 701 would be faster than a gsx-s750 on the street and in Twisties. Single punches so much hard from the off!
I think the single cylinder is part of the charm of the bike, the sound goes very well with the aesthetic

Do you feel the contact with pavement better one vs the other? Do they both have a steering stabilizer? Thanks for shooting in
Husky doesn't need one especially with 18" front wheel. I can't speak for the 790 though. Husky feel is good but also very plush and comfortable ride quality. WP is the truth
I bought the 701 this year and feel like I found a hidden gem! Got a good deal too, dealers couldn't get rid of them because of gas tank recall (Husky was slow to respond or something?)
I bought the Svartpilen as well this year (as my first bike too) and I'm so in love 2000km afterwards.
I almost switched to a Yamaha XSR700 due to the delay caused by the tank recall situation. Great bike too, but I'm glad I waited. I rode a lot of the competition in this class, like Kawasaki Z650, Honda CB650, Yamaha, MT07, even MT09, but the Husqvarna was just the most fun by a big margin. I find that it's fun at speeds between 70-100, wherr you don't lose your license, not like a MT09 or Duke 890, where you pull the throttle and reach 150kph in an instant, that's just insane for the road.

Had a great deal on a 701 while looking for an XSR700 and haven’t looked back! Always wanted a hectic supermoto and they are exactly what I wanted!
No issues either except for a mild warped front disc but covered by warrantee
@@blob2092 if you're thinking about the 701 grab an oberon clutch slave cylinder and slap it on there. Only real issue I've had with mine, and apparently everyone's will fail at some point. Mine went at 2800 miles..

I don't get it, 701 has instrument panel that is very similar to Ducati Scrambler 800. Does Ducati and Husqvarna has something in common? Maybe same suppliers of dash?)

Nice review, but to be fair really you should be comparing the 701 with the Duke 690.... I'm looking forward to whatever Husky does with the KTM 890 engine..... so a Husky 901... I'll be tempted if they do.
Forks on the KTM are actually not fully adjustable. You can change spring preload.
Husky has fully adjustable WP forks. 👍🙏🏻🎯😎

Hello.. I prefer comfortable options here on the Island. I use usually Sidi Duna or other alternatives from other brands (Dainese, TCX, Alpinestars).

Have to rid the 790 or 890 but the 701 is a great machine for sure and looks better than the ktm.

Smartpilen is sold for its looks. The 790 is much more exciting to drive.

For me Husky...
The 701 is odd-looking. I'd rather have a Vitpilen with bar-risers. Or even better, the cheaper 701 SM.
No questions... Vitpilen looks sick and way more interesting than Svartpilen. But I wouldn't really like to ride it with stock clip-ons. Similar like BMW nineT Racer. Most appealing from nineT models for many of us, but no one really bought it :(

2016+ 690 duke´s are better than 701. Same specs but better ergos and a real dashboard full of info. And Im not even talking about the R

That 701 is 1 pig ugly thing ! i buy something when i like the look of it so it that 701 could be the best thing on 2 wheels 1 would not look at it twice sorry ! but i do own a 790 now thats 1 good looking bike and she loves a good spanking what more can you ask for.
