I think the biggest issue with current SNL roster is that, they hired too many comedians that fit into the "straight man" trope. So there arent enough standout performers. The worst part is, none of them can hold a candle to Jason Sudeikis, who is probably the best straight man SNL has ever had. Jason tends to bring a personality to his roles, something which is hard to do when you are relegated to the straight man role. You want the other comedians to get the spotlight, while also come across as funny. Jason nailed that. The issue with current SNL is, aside from people like Marcello or Bowen, there isnt enough people to utilise this trope. So you are stuck with a skit where a "straight man" is paired up with another comedian, who is essentially a "straight man", but is forced to act wacky. Thats why a lot of skits feel lifeless and same reason why someone like Marcello is a standout, even if he is a one trick pony. Dont get me wrong, i like Marcello. But what makes him standout is the fact that almost everyone around him are bland.
Current snl cast member Bowen Yang, who already has been in several films while still being a cast member, has that star power to be a successful comedian outside of this show

Nothing against the current cast, but James is the only good impressionist and no one else can portray older politicians accurately. There are some funny people on the show like James, Dismukes, and Emil. There’s also some really talented writers like Auguste White and Steven Castillo. This comment is exactly what I was thinking. ‘Malevolent aura’ is the perfect way to describe it. Ever since he joined the show I was hoping to see him in some hader type roles because he has a kinda cheeky snappy deadpan delivery and mildly evil old timey charm I really like. I don’t think he has as much range as Hader but contrary to what was said in the video I thought the evil game show host was a perfect role for him and really played to his strengths. And yes the first game show host bit he did ( I think the one with the tortoise) was better than the mulaney one. Honestly the writing for most of the mulaney episode fell a bit flat for me.
Kate Mckinnon is awful in anything she has to do outside SNL. She is incredibly talented but from what I've seen of her work outside impressions I'm not convinced.
Honestly, she is too dependent on making faces for comedy that it gets old pretty fast. I also don't like some of her impressions. Especially her Shakira. It sounds exactly like her Penelope De Cruz impression with some "ole ole ole." Hell, every time she does a Spanish accent, she is basically doing a Penelope impression. I think her best impression is Justin Bieber. Everything else, she tends to do the same crazy expressions to every character. Best person I can compare her to is Bill Hader, who also excels at impressions and also played a lot of eccentric characters. Difference is, Bill actually has range and can convincingly do other things also. He is not reliant on making faces for comedy. Which is also why he is a successful actor. The funny thing about Kate is that, even when she plays the straight man, she is somehow the least sane person in the room due to her crazy eyes and mugging. I watched SNL skits on a binge, so I got bored of her pretty quickly.
@@JohnnyJustice777 Yeah I totally get where you're coming from. I haven't watched Ghostbusters 2016 but any scene of her in that movie is a perfect example of how she acts.
I wish more people watched snl last year, because season 49 was a fluke year. a really good fluke year where the whole cast and writers meshed, after years of report that made it feel like it was a theater company that you didn't want to miss out on after a decade of misses, but a fluke nonetheless. with all of the extra cameo's this year there's been weeks where the three new cast members get less then a minute of screen time, while sarah and yang get background roles every other sketch they're in. (There's a podcast that does the math every week lol.) I'd like to see it get back to being a theater company, since it it got them another five year contract at the end of last year. Honestly it looked like they were done for, with the whole turdtastic previous three years of hosts, but being a theme park for america makes them money so that's what we're gonna get, until it's mandatory to not be in a zombie state, snl works on weird rule systems and always has, just to keep the machine running on time
I was weirded out at first with everyone they got to play these political figures at first as well, but with most of them being former cast members, they've also contributed to stuff outside of their political sketches. I feel like having them in the studio is just good for everyone who might need a different perspective and they've been able to utilize them in other sketches as well. And new digital shorts is just something i figured we'd never get. I think this year has been a strong year even without any of the help of the others who came in, that Ariana Grande episode was an instant classic. I think they're the strongest they've been in a long time now
I think part of them bringing so many old cast members back for this election campaign has a lot to do with the fact that this is the show's 50th season so it's trying to be more retrospective
That was something I considered and it’s definitely possible! The reason I’m hesitant to fully think that is they’ve been doing it for a while now. But either way I don’t think it changes my opinion on it too much so I didn’t feel the need to talk about it in the video
Yeah, but not to the extent that Cecily was, because they were still using their other cast members at those points. It would still have been extremely noticeable that they were leaning on Cecily heavily and not using the other cast members as much even if she wasn’t a Weekend Update anchor. The fact that she was also anchor just tipped it over into ridiculousness.
Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennet sucked at performing as cast mambers. They had no comedic timing and should have only been writers on the show, not on stage.
I've watched SNL on and off over the decades, and it's never really been as good as people give it credit for. Every episode or so, there's one good bit. Occasionally, there's an extraordinary one, and maybe once a year, they will create something legendary. BUT, most of the show is forgettable garbage. It's best watched here on RUclips after the good bits have been filtered out of all the crap.
Great video. I've been liking the past cast members coming back but also would love the current cast to be used. Also me & my dad have been quoting Dana's Biden so much since this season just out of nowhere😂 Can't wait for SNL50 Special to see what they do
Darrell Hammond should absolutely have kept playing Trump instead of Alec Baldwin. Alec was a good host. But his Trump was garbage from the start. I never liked it. He just pursed his lips and got painted gold. Lorne loves him though. Bringing Alec back recently when he's still got the scandal of shooting a human being hanging over his head was a horrible choice I can't imagine anyone thought was a good idea.
Some people can make the transition from social media to more mainstream comedy. I don't know if Jane Wickline is one of them. So far she's barely shown up and when she has it's pretty shaky. Usually some variation of a low key person coupled with higher energy people. My problem is it seems like they had to get rid of Chloe Troast to make room for Jane and there's now a massive void that hasn't been filled. Chloe showed up in so many sketches. She was versatile. She could sing. Jane is not versatile and can't really sing. Molly Kearney and Punkie Johnson never had specific enough skill sets they couldn't be replaced. They're really missing someone like Chloe who had one of the better sketches right out of the gate as the adult orphan singing to the moon. She had specific skills that the show has now lost.
That’s fair. I tend to like that style of internet-y humor so those types of people tend to win me over pretty quickly but it’s not always the best fit for mainstream media. Only time will tell. And it’s unfortunate what happened with Troast but obviously that’s not Wickline’s fault so I don’t hold it against her
@@n8cartoonistconsidering that both her parents are in the comedy business, it kind of is. She can do musical based skits, which is also what Chloe does. So SNL basically dropped Chloe for her. Which makes me think: Why is Michael Longfellow in the show? At first, I thought he was an extra. Now after seeing enough sketches, im still wondering what he is doing in this show. He and Andrew Desmukes are basically interchangeable. Also, what is Devon Walker doing in this show, other than filing a quota? A lot of sketches fall flat because it is essentially a straight man opposite another straight man, pretending to be wacky. Even if I hate Sarah Sherman as an actress, she atleast has unique ideas. I do think that she is a very creative person. Most of the roster is devoid of personality, which is why someone like Marcello stands out. He is a one trick pony, but his energy, charisma and personality are things that the show needs
I agree with a lot of what you’re saying here. I just try to keep in mind that I think part of the celebrity casting has to do with the fact that the cast has a lot more flexibility now they can take other jobs while they’re on snl now. That never used to happen. Especially projects that aren’t produced by Lorne. That had an effect on who’s available. Also with it being the 50th anniversary season I only expect more celebrities dropping in
1. please learn how to use a microphone, your voice sounds muffled as hell 2. you make a point to mention Lonely Island but completely blank on Good Neighbor's contribution to the show for years, when it was Beck and Kyle (and Dave behind the scenes) who provided hands-down most of the funniest and most creative pieces from their period 3. it's so fuckin sad & pathetic that most people's impression is limited almost entirely to the political bullshit and the stunt hosts, when it's always been home to some incredible goofball/absurd/weirdo shit (another thing you def skip over) 4. your point about misusing cast members is entirely valid though: i can't help but wonder if many of the members w/ one/two-season tenures (Troast, O'Brien, Aristotle, Robinson) could've found their footing had Lorne not insist on shoehorning big-name guests that hog the spotlight (i'm of the opinion that we need to dropkick Baldwin into a volcano and banish any and all politicians from ever appearing again) 5. and yeah... i'd rather have a blue victory, thanks
when you say the newer seasons aren't pumping out good talent, you say it in the presence of kyle mooney, who is THE LORD. at least he is to me. he's my #1 handsy boy.
I think another issue for SNL is that they can't keep up anymore. The world is moving too fast and by the time Saturday rolls around, all their material is outdated to a degree. I think that's one reason why South Park went into those 1 hour specials. With news being forever 24/7 and internet jokes dying out faster than ever before, it's hard to write shows like this.
@@n8cartoonist indeed, I know Im just an old rusty humor tank, but that is my jam, I was like OMG no no no (the carrot thing) and my kids came in and I was laughing, they said "can you do that" "NO NO NO YOU CANT, OMG". dad why is his hair like ... so ugly. Allso the part from the movie Hot Shots where he puts M3 postets over Sadams eyes, epic. What can I say, stressfull day need somthing to laugh at
That's the point, aka feature not a bug. When you outgrow a generation of geniuses (or vice versa), and the next generation reached for but failed to arrive at the same height, you WAIT and SURVIVE. You don't strive for identity when you are weak and struggling.
Really great points! It would be nice if they invested more into the current cast and gave them opportunities to grow and shine. I’m enjoying Jane so far! I still get her girl who won’t leave the party song stuck in my head fairly often. Also loved your opening credits ❤️
I was following a lot of snl cast and writers on Instagram before they even got on snl. And when i saw the amount of people leave last season which makes me sad. Especially for someone like molly who'v ive been a fan of years. Celeste yim ive been a fan of because of snl but their departure still meant as much to me as julio torres did.
1995-2002 is my favorite era. I like stupid humor, and Will Ferrel's sketches always cracked me up. Will had a great way of being hilarious while giving the other people in the sketches a voice. I also feel like many of the sketches from the '80s to the early 2000s translated well into movies i.e. Bob Roberts, Blues Brothers, Waynes World, and Coneheads (I know most people hate this movie but I loved watching it as a kid).
I always thought they were portraying Hillary as cringey and overconfident on purpose, not in a complimentary way lol. It felt like watching Hillary in real life when it hurt to watch her talk.
My one caveat to that part about Andy Samberg is that they CLEARLY wanted to make a lot of jokes about Doug being Jewish and since being Jewish is a staple part of Samberg's comedy they wanted to use him, I agree tho that they could've just opted to have an active cast member play Doug (or not include him??? since he was barely part of the campaign) he's always funny though 🤷
For a long long time they had no idea how to end their sketches, and things would drag on for wayyyyy too long, killing the joke of what could otherwise have been a pretty solid sketch and making it near unwatchable. They've been getting better at this lately, learning when to cut things off more effectively. The bigger problem for them now, at least from my perspective, is that oftentimes they just forget to write jokes? You'll see a sketch centered around Bowen and the whole joke seems to be "gay=funny," "slay queen," "girlboss," which the live audience seems to get a kick out of but really doesn't do it for me. I'm NOT saying "ew woke," but it does seem like "saying the right thing" is valued at least as much if not more than saying something funny
I feel like after a certain point, SNL stopped being purely counter culture and became increasingly affirming of the status quo because it became part of it. It’s always kind of teetered on the edge of that. It would become status quo, then lean back into counter culture and come back. But it’s so far away from the roots of Michael Odonoghue’s biting and dangerous weirdo stuff or Norm’s amazing version of update. It’s tough to have to keep reinventing and reestablishing yourself and stay relevant.
SNL has blown ass for well over a decade now. Their writing and actors aren’t funny anymore and they pander super hard politically. Every now and then they do better. Weekend update seems somewhat funny very recently from clips I’ve seen. And certain episodes have good sketches. But about 5 good sketches a season is max.
Back in the 20th century, most sketches delivered with a few pieces of 19th letter 8th letter 9th letter 20th letter to deal with. Since the the 21st century, it's now swimming through a sea of 19th letter 8th letter 9th letter 20th letter to find the few good pieces. It's time to start a movement. Ratings need to drop rapidly like what is happening to AEW wrestling. Best way to do that is to get people who still want to watch, is to get them to *pirate* the show. Piracy is the ultimate Devil's Advocate after all. Also, get rid of Lorne Michaels. The main reason for why SNL has been a dumpster fire since Jim Breuer left! Repost this message all over the net to your heart's content.
How are you gonna have this video about snl and not even mention how they fucked up with how they handled Shane Gillis and lost his fantastic trump impression
@@frogknightgames he already hosted and was positive about it - guy doesn’t hold a grudge - but at Skankfest the host celebrated that Shane chose his existing commitment to them over SNL.
They offered Shane Gillis the role of Donald Trump for a season which he turned down because he had other commitments. But he is so much better than their current guy, that I can’t blame them for trying.
Did everyone forget how they fired Shane for "being too edgy?" He made a joke recently about the "offer" and made it clear SNL is a trash fire and he's staying far away.
@ he wasn’t that negative - I think it helped that Lorne seemed to support him until he couldn’t. But even if he is too nice to say anything, it probably wouldn’t be a good career move. Doing it on Kill Tony was definitely the better way to go. Still I love Shane’s impression and wish I got to see it more.
It's funny how they got rid of Chloe Troast, who was their best new cast member since the start of the new decade, and yet none of the three cast members did ANYTHING remarkable. Heck, I'd argue she left more of an impact than Michael Longfellow or Devon Walker ever did.
The crisis is that a comedy show that should be made for everyone is now one sided propaganda, meant to make us all think that whatever the entertainment industry says is common sense. It's time for some changes.
If you're wondering what happened with this video I had to reupload it for copyright reasons

(There's a podcast that does the math every week lol.)
I'd like to see it get back to being a theater company, since it it got them another five year contract at the end of last year. Honestly it looked like they were done for, with the whole turdtastic previous three years of hosts, but being a theme park for america makes them money so that's what we're gonna get, until it's mandatory to not be in a zombie state, snl works on weird rule systems and always has, just to keep the machine running on time
Omg they brought N8Cartoonist back for this season?? Hes my favorite!!!
They should be bringing back a lot of the old cast members for the 50th year. But, they have only been bringing back the same 3 old cast members.
8:24 There have been several Weekend Update anchors that also appeared in many sketches. Fallon, Poehler, Norm, Neelon, etc.
Also me & my dad have been quoting Dana's Biden so much since this season just out of nowhere😂
Can't wait for SNL50 Special to see what they do
Darrell Hammond should absolutely have kept playing Trump instead of Alec Baldwin.
Hammond was really good. Definitely sits between Baldwin and Johnson for me. I was definitely surprised they brought Baldwin back after the shooting
My imaginary friend Franklin D. Roosevelt said he likes your sweater
This season is the first time I've tuned back into SNL for years! I've been wondering why there was this "comeback", great video!
16:47 we gotta stop giving gen z skibidi garbage that’s definitely gen alpha
I agree with a lot of what you’re saying here. I just try to keep in mind that I think part of the celebrity casting has to do with the fact that the cast has a lot more flexibility now they can take other jobs while they’re on snl now. That never used to happen. Especially projects that aren’t produced by Lorne. That had an effect on who’s available. Also with it being the 50th anniversary season I only expect more celebrities dropping in
I like your sweater - it reminds me of those German licorice candies, lol
1. please learn how to use a microphone, your voice sounds muffled as hell
2. you make a point to mention Lonely Island but completely blank on Good Neighbor's contribution to the show for years, when it was Beck and Kyle (and Dave behind the scenes) who provided hands-down most of the funniest and most creative pieces from their period
3. it's so fuckin sad & pathetic that most people's impression is limited almost entirely to the political bullshit and the stunt hosts, when it's always been home to some incredible goofball/absurd/weirdo shit (another thing you def skip over)
4. your point about misusing cast members is entirely valid though: i can't help but wonder if many of the members w/ one/two-season tenures (Troast, O'Brien, Aristotle, Robinson) could've found their footing had Lorne not insist on shoehorning big-name guests that hog the spotlight (i'm of the opinion that we need to dropkick Baldwin into a volcano and banish any and all politicians from ever appearing again)
5. and yeah... i'd rather have a blue victory, thanks
insanely well made and really looking forward to future stuff
TV Funhouse was amazing! But even better when they briefly got their own show on Comedy Central.
In 2013, they knew Seth Meyers was on his way to Late Night, so they were using a lot of the cast in the 2nd Update chair.
not mention marcelo hernandez is my only problem with this video
Came all this way, had to explain....
when you say the newer seasons aren't pumping out good talent, you say it in the presence of kyle mooney, who is THE LORD. at least he is to me. he's my #1 handsy boy.
16:34 hey! that’s not gen z, that’s the gen alpha brainrot!
Dude your intro about how guys don’t show their profile is spot on. You seem like a guy who would enjoy Redbar
Subbed man, I hope you keep growing bc ur really good at this!
No lie I didn't even look at ur sub count til after the vid and I'm blown away, you're really good at this and deserve a much larger following!!!
SNL season 37 makes me want to watch the movie MacGruber again.
Ah a fellow enjoyer of fine art I see
@@n8cartoonist indeed, I know Im just an old rusty humor tank, but that is my jam, I was like OMG no no no (the carrot thing) and my kids came in and I was laughing, they said "can you do that" "NO NO NO YOU CANT, OMG". dad why is his hair like ... so ugly. Allso the part from the movie Hot Shots where he puts M3 postets over Sadams eyes, epic.
What can I say, stressfull day need somthing to laugh at
Marcello and the Domingo sketches brought me back to SNL this year😩 I think this season has had some of the better sketches in awhile!
Baldwin RFK is the laziest, most unfunny “impression”
That's the point, aka feature not a bug. When you outgrow a generation of geniuses (or vice versa), and the next generation reached for but failed to arrive at the same height, you WAIT and SURVIVE. You don't strive for identity when you are weak and struggling.
Really great points! It would be nice if they invested more into the current cast and gave them opportunities to grow and shine. I’m enjoying Jane so far! I still get her girl who won’t leave the party song stuck in my head fairly often. Also loved your opening credits ❤️
Nice Pete Davidson slam while he is literally in rehab! What an idiot!
I think Marcello and Andrew are really funny, but Hernandez might become a sort of muleney type.
24:50 instead of just copying lonely island they're also copying workaholics
STARRING~~~ A PIECE OF TOAST
This was really well made! I'm shocked you don't have a larger audience
He sounds like a child, and pretty obviously didn't do any research. "he is just so... not good" real biting commentary there. Your TDS is showing.
Hi N8! So glad RUclips suggested this video. Now I am subscribed to you! ❤
And if you notice this “counter culture” show sure has been having a lot of corporate product placement in their skits.
You are also a fan of It's Pat.
Baldwin as trump like Baldwin himself always kills
I always thought they were portraying Hillary as cringey and overconfident on purpose, not in a complimentary way lol.
It felt like watching Hillary in real life when it hurt to watch her talk.
I didn't know Noel Wells was on SNL! She's delightful as Tendi on Star Trek Lower Decks.
Oh I thought you’d mention how Maya Rudolph is a “ nepotism baby” as well considering you mentioned her after the newer cast 😅
Will keep an eye out for your Weekend Update on if they change or stay same for next couple of years.
ALSO DONALD TRUMP HAS HOSTED TWICE!
Bowen is not funny at all. But Sarah Sherman is hilarious!
Theyr lost their identity a long time ago.
i was in middle school in 2015 and never knew until now that he hosted snl
Nasim Perad supremacy
I remembered Nasim Pedrad and that’s it 😅
gen z is 25 now btw
Sometimes indeed . Oldest are 27, youngest are 15ish
I think Melissa Mccarthy is hilarious :(
Did he just slam TV Funhouse?
Hellloool justice for Melissa McCarthy and PDD fans
I was really looking forward to this season after S49 but with Chloe Troast's departure and Trump winning it has felt very strange 😕
Just have faith in the cast.
TV Funhouse was great
The lonely island was the WOrSt era only the lonely island was good. Bowen Yang is already famous
This cast is at such a low point
Yeah that was obvious.. When they fired Norm MacDonald 30 years ago.
2:35 this was worth the wait tho
Great Joe Rogan joke
SNL has blown ass for well over a decade now. Their writing and actors aren’t funny anymore and they pander super hard politically. Every now and then they do better. Weekend update seems somewhat funny very recently from clips I’ve seen. And certain episodes have good sketches. But about 5 good sketches a season is max.
Back in the 20th century, most sketches delivered with a few pieces of
19th letter
8th letter
9th letter
20th letter
to deal with.
Since the the 21st century, it's now swimming through a sea of
19th letter
8th letter
9th letter
20th letter
to find the few good pieces.
Right! They tried to get Shane to do Trump just for season 50… but he is too busy for that now.
@@notoriouslybratty Why would he do any such thing after how they treated him?
@@frogknightgames he already hosted and was positive about it - guy doesn’t hold a grudge - but at Skankfest the host celebrated that Shane chose his existing commitment to them over SNL.
What do u think abt Marcello Hernandez?
I like him! I probably should’ve mentioned him too but it slipped my mind. Lotta exciting new talent!
Good job algorithm
Spittin nothin but facts, King
I'm not a mother and I do find Melissa McCarthy hilarious. But I know her only from SNL.
It's funny how they got rid of Chloe Troast, who was their best new cast member since the start of the new decade, and yet none of the three cast members did ANYTHING remarkable. Heck, I'd argue she left more of an impact than Michael Longfellow or Devon Walker ever did.
Well, you are not wrong. For a while, I thought Longfellow was an extra, due to how well he fits in the background
Jaden Smith dope tho
Daryl Hammond was a better Trump
Yeah🎉good video❤
video ate! you should check out drew gooden's video about SNL, kinda in the same vein and saying similar things
Thank you! His video is great! I tried to make sure I covered different stuff than him
It feels bad to say it, but this current cast is not funny for the nostalgia part. Only a handful of the cast are funny.
Snl has never really been funny
you mentioned the nepos and not Marcelo.
This is partially because I wanted to talk about the topic of nepotism but he’s good!
Trump on SNL... wtf...
Crazy stuff dude
The crisis is that a comedy show that should be made for everyone is now one sided propaganda, meant to make us all think that whatever the entertainment industry says is common sense. It's time for some changes.
You still get a thumbs up although I think you're triggered by Trump.
I can't stand Sarah whatever with the grating voice. Instant fast forward.
