Folks out there- if there's budget, please consider steel swords over aluminum. Every Aluminum trainer I've ever touched has next to zero flex (so you basically can't train thrusts), a steel mask will. literally shave off pieces when you hit it, and it's way less durable. A messer trainer from purrpleheart armory wll be the right size and weight to do most FMA systems, has realistic bind presence, and won't turn into a saw after 10 rounds of sparring.

Won't that require them to also get some kind of fencing jacket?

Not any more than training with rattan, and less so than aluminum (which is stiffer and more likely to have chainsaw-level burrs). If you're training thrusts to the body I might get a chest protector/plastron. I train outdoors
in texas so I don't use the jacket like....8 months of the year@@chaos_omega
