    I just lost my cockatiel who was with me for 20 years... Its heartbreakin, we became friends and we hugged each other almost daily. For new owners make sure you spend time with your bird if, especially so if you only have one cockatiel, they will see you as their partner and get worried if youre not home too often. They will make you smile and they will do stuff but you will love them no matter what. Best of companions, and a lifetime experience for me what Doris was for me

      So sorry for your loss! My cockatiel is about 9 years old now. I will be devastad when his time comes. We bonded very quickly and have a beautiful friendship. He loves to snuggle and come right under my chin to nuzzle in. There’s just no other relationship quite like one with a bird. Big hugs to you. You were both very lucky to find each other.

    I can't thank you enough for educating people about how to own a cockatiel pet correctly. These little creatures are awesome, so smart and lovable. Something else that is terrible is when owners start doing things to the cockatiel to elicit certain behaviors that they deem funny. Hence, some cockatiels become aggressive and hiss to people. Their livers suffer with this and their lifespan is shortened. Thank you!!! ❤

    I have recently bought my new little fella, Titus and i took my time to get to know him. It took a few weeks of just sitting on my couch and he observed me lol. Being older had its benefits..every kid wants to touch but as an adult I chose not to. I was careful abt letting him have cage free time and used a wooden spoon with a rounded handle to teach him to perch, not my fingers. Well what a thrill. He trusts me now. He now hops from the spoon to my flat hand, climbs up onto my shoulder. I sing to him, feed him grated carrot, broccolini, and grated apple along with his seed. I can’t whistle so i play him whistling tunes from Spotify. Thank you for your vid. I am keen to find out as much as I can to give my gorgeous pet the best care I can give ❤

The poo is very small and never stinks, I collect his poos in a plate and add them to flowers pots. The flowers became stronger and shiner.

      I have a cockatiel who can't fly as well! A good tip I have is to give them lots of perches that connect! Similar to cats, I've noticed they love being high-up. Make sure it isn't too high though, so if your bird falls by any chance, it can safely glide down. Also, once you get closer with your bird, you can train it to ride on your shoulder. Mine currently is fully trained to do this, and it helps a lot, especially with a bird who can't fly :)

    I’d like to encourage new cockatiel pet owners to go slowly, gently, quietly to win their trust. It does take time. Please, please don’t be quick to touch and pat them first up. You are frightening your bird! You’ll lose a finger. Noone wants that! Use a wooden spoon handle or a stick to get your bird to get used to stepping up and eventually he will warm to you and hop up on your hand, shoulder, back. Let them come to you, let them have the choice. You’ll have a happy birdy! ❤❤❤

    Part of the reason I just let a ten year relationship was over my ex, cause she did not want a mate for my cockatiel Breeze and just saw pets as a chore or keep them in cages all the time. When she would sit on checkers and think they were eggs lol. This woman closed the door and almost scalped her crest off her head! She even got high and open the cage and let her fly into a ceiling fan. I know she has depression and issues, but she literally almost killed my bird so many times when I was at work, I’d be so nervous. She is so sweet and loves scratches, I got her 8 years ago when her daughter wanted to just leave her in a room who is autistic and didn’t know how to properly care for pets. Anyway, I had to get outta there with my bird. Now she has bad allergies and eyes are watery in this new apartment. She has conjunctivitis and I’m saving money for the avian vet to see her. Pray for my baby, Breeze! She got me through so much trauma like my sister overdosing. Breeze would fly and land on the couch after my surgery to give me love and encouragement… RIP Christina…

    • @TheChardygirl007
      @TheChardygirl007 5 месяцев назад

      This might be a it late but the only way for you bird to learn to better control his flying us to let him do it. I was given a 5 year old cockatiel I was told had been allowed out of his (small) cage all the time except he flew like he was on day 5 of a week long bender, into walls, people, curtains, furniture, the dog and us it was hilarious but also so sad to see he’d not been treated as he should have been. I moved him into a larger cafe that I had and from the very first day he was here he was encouraged out of the cage. Now it’s a year later and I open his cage on the morning and I don’t close it again until bedtime or on the rare occasions the front door may be open a bit too long. He flies like a champ, his favourite spot is my shoulder or his perch in my shower when I’m in there and his cage is just his safe space for food, drinks, naps and nighttime.
      I also can’t recommend a hardness highly enough. It’s often traumatising to us both to get it on and off him but once he realised harness = being outside with me without being locked in his small outside cage he now loves the harness. He doesn’t mind his travel bag but the harness is his favourite.

    I also hang out with her all day and she loves playing around the room.
    Any tips on how I can get her to trust my hands, so I can pet her or at least get her to stand on my fingers?

      Let her see you come in peace. Remember we are like giants to them so being so close with your face rubbing hmm Im not sure that’s a good idea. Try using a wooden spoon with a rounded handle and gently holding her. on the spoon till she trusts you and then offer your hand flat and slowly. Cant rush her. No sudden movements. Gently does it. ❤

      Depends. Do you keep your Cockatiel alone (which you shouldn't do anyways if possible). Then it's most likely not enough. If your Bird has a Partner of the same Species, it's a good Amount of Time. You can take a Look in a Animal Shelter if you need to find a Partner for your Bird, because Cockatiels seem to be pretty common there, from what I've heard.

      🤔 I'm no Expert but maybe your Dad should reduce the Contact as much as possible for some Time and if you only have one Cockatiel, try to get a Partner of the opposite Gender for it within that Time. Hopefully they will bond then with each other instead. Also educate your Dad about properly petting a Cockatiel in the Case that it might come from him petting it on its Back or Wings.

Sit near her cage so your bird can eye you off lol. Observe you. It really is true about having to win their trust. We are like giants to them and we need to act gently. No sudden movements. I can’t whistle but I play whistling tunes on Spotify and sing to my cockatiel Titus. He listens it’s so cute. I have a really good cage where it opens up at the ceiling and i open it every day and now Titus knows and gets ready to climb up! They are very smart. I doubt yours would fly away unless you keep your windows open. Im in Australia and there’s too many native birds to attack him so I leave him inside out of the cage still. need help with my cockatiel
    I've done research on Budgies for years and I'm learning on Cockatiels now. I'm waiting for everything to be set and ready before I get the bird. Like the cage, once it's fully setup with the right things, once I bird proof my room, once Ive learned everything I need such as food, taming, sickness, moods, and so on.
    But I'm confused about something. So Budgies (from my knowledge) need about a week or two alone in the cage to understand the surroundings and you. You could rub your finger on the cage and such so they can get used to you.
    But is that the same with cockatiels? If so, how long do I need to wait until they're okay with their surroundings?
    What do I do when I first get it?
    And how soon should I let it out the cage so it can fly freely in my room?

    • @celiav7548
      @celiav7548 Год назад +1

      They may need some time to adjust to their new environment, and you should give them at least a week to adapt while you spend time near them, talking in a calm voice, offering treats, and letting them get used to your presence.
      You also have to wait until the bird is comfortable with you before allowing them to fly freely. This can take a few weeks or longer. Also, you should start by allowing the bird out of the cage in a small, enclosed space, gradually increasing the amount of time it spends outside.

    • @TeddyCrochet
      @TeddyCrochet Год назад

      Every bird is different but you can let them out as early as the first day. The longer you wait to let them out the more they will want to just stay in the cage and actually become afraid of coming out. They will see the cage as their only safe place and that will hinder your ability to bond with them. Check out bird tricks here on RUclips they have lots of great videos!

I have had about 20 or more Cockatiels in my life. mostly people keep them in a too small cage. no toys and no friends is very sad. that is why i took in another baby who has been all alone long days, because the owner needs to work. now she is having a new much better life.🦜

    I have a cocktail named "Trixie" and I made some mistakes because the company cutted some feathers from her wing and I would accidentally drop Trixie and she would try to fly but she would fly on her back with is the funny stuff and she/he is sitting on me right now so have a great day

    How do I get it out of the cage without touching it?

    • @nexusfairy3038
      @nexusfairy3038 Год назад +1

      Is it an emergency to get it out? If not, don't. Keep the cage door open and in the same room as you. They'll come out when their ready. Offer treats, talk to them.

    Mine are not alone at all. Whenever we leave the house, it's only the cat who remains home with them. She is really gentle and loving. Anyway we never leave our cockatiels outside of their cage without our supervision. Of course, cat issues... We first had two, a male and a female, and now we have 4. Another girl and boy. They are cubs, not bought from the Pet Shop because our two little angels made babies. We had to have the 3 baby cockatiel long after the birth or our two little ones, but it sadly passed away shortly after hatching. I was so sad... but now they made other 4 eggs and we are waiting to see if we are gonna get other babies. I pray that the babies will be healthy and able to live. ❤🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣

    • @Firestar-TV
      @Firestar-TV Год назад

      Can you go into more Detail? What exactly do you mean with not friendly at all? Does it try to bite if you get too close? Maybe it's just the Birds Personality or you just need to bond more with it. Try not to move much while holding Millet in your Hand in a Way that it can eat without needing to get on your Arm. You can also try to feed it with Millet through the Bars of the Cage to gain Trust. Works relatively good with my female. Don't try to pet it though until you've gained its Trust and even then you should be cautious because if they are getting really serious while biting, they can rip your Finger open in a Way that it might need a few Hours to stop bleeding

      @@7sson-hasson-310 no Pet Shop Owner but I do have my Pair of Cockatiels for almost a Year now and did lots of Research. I'm also in Contact with another Cockatiel Owner who provides me with useful Informations. Would be nice though if I could work in a Pet Shop😊
      My female is also rather shy but I've read somewhere that it can even take Years for some Individuals to properly trust their Owner.
      I do have the Suspicion that maybe my male was Hand raised and my female wasn't. Could also be though because my male has way more Experience with People because he had multiple Owners before me and is already 16 Years old, while my female probably only lived with the Person from which I've got her and the Breeder when she was really small, because she is only 3 Years old

      @@7sson-hasson-310 Cockatiels can even reach 30 Years. Some Color Variations like Lutinos are most of the Time only reaching half of that though due to bad Breeding Decissions in past Generations where they've always bred those together which means, there wasn't really that much genetic Diversity and they should've definitely also used some wild colored ones from Time to Time to bring in fresh genetic Material.
      One good Channel who also made a few Video about Cockatiels is Soda Pets, The Parrot Teacher is also a pretty good Channel and Clints Reptiles released a Video about Cockatiels today (for this one I must say though that it's rather controversial to use a sanded Perch to reduce the Claw Length and Mirrors also shouldn't be used in a Bird Cage, but besides that, it is a really good Video where you can learn some of the most important Things about Cockatiel Care)

      MOST types of birds are highly sociable including cocktails and canaries and if you leave them alone, it is PURE TORTURE FOR THEM and that is an EMOTIONAL ABUSE ! if you are not able be with them 24-7, then you HAVE TO HAVE AT LEAST 2 OF THEM AT ALL TIMES !
