What?? well it proves my point that people with cell phones that they cannot let go with them, as they rather Stream, Facebook, Look at crap than create images with a traditional camera.... Do you think so?? Yea
Get a half case for it, I have one on mine, it'll fix your strap problem as it has side lugs. That front mount I think was designed for the 50mm 0.95 as that lens is front heavy and it stops the camera pointing down when used!
I have a Leica m4. Your camera is a great camera as is the Leica. At the end of the day the photo is what really matters. Enjoy your Canon!!! Thanks for your video Sir.
Go for the P. The 7 and 7S changed to a more complex shutter which turns out to be a problem in a lot of cameras. It operates on higher spring pressures for the high speed shutter mechanism. The fast speeds tend to slow down and are not practically repairable: no parts; no repairmen who know how to work on them. The 7 remains usable with this problem, but you have to mentally adjust your aperture to compensate for 1/250 which is running 2/3 stop slow. Speeds from 1/125 on down seem to work okay. The P uses the same shutter mechanism as the VI and V, which is very much like the traditional Leica shutter design - easily repaired. Overall, the P is a much simpler camera, which at their current age and lack of support is a good thing.
@@JamieMPhoto I think if you want to use the Jupiter 12 35/2.8, the 7 may be the better choice. It may interfere with the light baffle inside the P. I don't have any problems with the J-12 on my 7, and Ribs shows his Canon 7 with the J-12 here as well. Proof it's a good combination. Good step up from a Zorki 4 series due to Canon's viewfinder.
Man the Canon P was my first rangefinder and the one that made me I fell in love with rangefinders in general. Had that same 35mm lens but ended up going with the Jupiter 3 50mm f2 Zeiss sonar copy. Made some of my favorite photos with that combo! The P has those same annoying lugs too. I never put a neck strap on it for that same reason!
One way I get my Leica fix is through their SLR’s. The Leicaflex series was made before they partnered with Minolta and are just as well built as Leica rangefinders. The lenses and bodies sell for a lot less than the rangefinders because they aren’t as valuable to collectors. Makes a great opportunity to get a Leica camera for a really good price. The SL and SL2 are the best of the series, and I’d take a serious look at buying one if you want a “budget” Leica. They’re beautiful cameras!
Have a look at the original Contax T , designed by Porsche. A genuine rangefinder , super small solid build with an amazing lens . The later models were autofocus , but the original is really good. Immediately noticeable due to the folding down front
The Canon 50mm f1.4 LTM is one of the best lenses out there for a quarter of the price of any Leica lenses. And it's super sharp and beautiful. Yes a little more expensive than the soviet lenses but compared to Leica prices it's a steel, at least until people notice them and prices go up. Considered the Japanese Summilux for a good reason.
I enjoyed the review! Just got my Canon 7 from Japan yesterday, very nice and it appears that the meter works well enough, will give a test run soon. I also have the Jupiter lenses which have a special look.
I have the 7 and love it too... and by the way (5:40) that is the rangefinder and not the light meter... the light meter is the textured glass arround it. great review bro 🤙🏽
I will be a minority maybe, but I like what canon did with the ltm after leica quit. And also prefer the ltm lenses, since they are not that expensive and still being made new. 2:53 they made it with the 1.2 and 0.95 50mm in mind. It is expecting a heavy lens on the front. Also worth pointing out is that you actually sometimes hold the camera by its light meter. While I am quite sure that the selenium cells are dying, having fingers in front of those bulby things around the rangefinder patch window does not help for sure :D
Bit late, but the Light meter is at the end of the plastic, opposite end of the focus mirror window, like the very left side of the white plastic on the front, and the stripped plastic is the focal range patch, the meter was probably off cause you were covering the meter with your fingers.
You can edit the title to include a space to "Canon" and "7". I didn't find this video under "Canon 7" which most people are going to search for when finding more about this camera.
Great choice of rangefinder, I love mine, I have the same lens your buddy lent to you. I like the old russian lenses (price) and they also give you some cool little quirks and background blur etc.
These Canon rangefinders are really great pieces of gear. I bought a L1 a while ago and really like using it - especially in combination with the 35mm Jupiter-12 :) Mostly I use Sunny 16, but as the L1 has the accessory shoe on the top plate, I just put one of the Reveni Labs lightmeters into it so I can get a quick reading when in doubt.
Wicked looking camera man. I thought I saw them all, but here we are with something I didn't know about haha. Looks wicked for sure and I agree it seems like a Leica. Looking forward to see what you come up with using this beauty.
Leica or not, still a beautiful camera. There's not many rangefinder cameras that are ugly hahaha. Personally, I'm just a sucker for vintage cameras, in damn near mint condition--just beautiful. And props to you for dabbling in Street and trying to get out of your comfort zone.
Personally, I wish they made some canon 7 models without the light meter. otherwise, its not too bad looking at all. That being said, I'm currently saving up for a Canon P. I've used a Leica IIIF, and found it to be totally overrated. So if I can pick up a P for a third of the price, ill be very happy.
I thought about the Canon 7, but in the end I went with the Canon P. The P was just too beautiful not to go with, but I'll probably still pick up a 7 at some point.
Great video. I too would love a Leica but I am not ready to sell a limb for it. Also, your phone that close to the edge of the table is giving me crazy anxiety.
Lovely camera, and like you I love the vintage Japanese take on the rangefinder camera. I use a Minolta HIMatic 7s, which doesn't have interchangeable lenses but does have a leaf shutter so it's even quieter than yours. Looking at the problem with the camera hanging at the wrong angle around your neck, if you could get an ever-ready half-case for it and fix the strap to the case, that might solve the problem.
That Jupiter lens may not be the best to pair with the Canon, since it doesn't communicate with the rangefinder correctly, but at apurtures from like f/5,6 up, the depth of field is so massive, it doesn't really matter.
Cool video thank you. Always best to use OEM strap if you have it. Just because it will sit the way it is suppose to. Leica and Canon are different, but just depends on your priorities and purpose with the camera. Canon made and still make amazing cameras. I suppose it’s like an Honda NSX vs a Porsche 911.
I love my Canon 7 but agree about the strap lugs. It drives me crazy because I like to walk with a camera around my neck for miles a day and it's so annoying when it hangs sideways. I think the lugs were placed like that to balance out the massive 50mm 0.95 lens that goes with the Canon 7. I have a tiny voigtlander 35mm 2.5 and it is too light to balance it. I want to get the leather half case because it hangs better
I have the Canon P - basically the 7 minus the meter (although it did come with a matching selenium meter that attaches to the accessory shoe - I never use it). For me, it's as beautiful and fun to use as a Leica, but about a quarter of the price. I use the Canon f2 35mm lens on it, and it's as sharp as a mofo. In fact, some used to refer to it as the "Japanese Summicron". Canon ltm lenses are seriously good. The only problem is that most of them are located in Japan, and you have to pay a lot of postage and import duty for them. Totally worth it, though.
Ribs, add the Canon P to your collection. It was the predecessor to the Canon 7 series of cameras. It uses the same LTM lenses. So you don't need to buy new ones. You can thank me later.
@@ribsy yeah, bruh! Check out the Canonet QL17 GIII. They were all great consumer level, some would argue professional level rangefinders. A little trivia for you, the Canon P is bulletproof, like actually can take a bullet and keep working. I wish Canon would make a commemorative version of the P but mirrorless with an M mount. That would be dope.
Hello Ribsy, thx for the periodic film & foto updates. Is it that the Jupiter 12 has a fit problem in the Canon P, but not with the Canon 7? Or is it some manufacturers or series that have a better fit than others with Canon rangefinders? Thanks, and cheers!
I got a Canon 7 after my QL17 died and despite buying a Leica M2 later, I use the Canon more. The only advantage the Leica has as far as I can tell is ergonomics.
I have this camera and had a minolta CLE and I actually preferred the viewfinder in the canon 7 big and beautiful 😍 but preferred the minolta CLE size and operation. The canon 7 is hard to say no to for the money so I sold the CLE and that's basically a leica m6 contender
I mean, no it's not as good looking as a Leica but it's still a great camera. You can't go wrong with one, it'll do everything you need and still looks nice.
Still have my Canon's and Contax's I cannot see myself owning a Leica, Although that I got a Big Negative response at the Leica Gallery in San Francisco as I brought my Canon 7, and Fuji XE1 with a 35mm Nikkor as people just SHUN at me, and one person said to me: "That is Not a Leica", and I told him well then you are not a Photo Shooter - So Go an F*#k Yourself as I am hear to buy a book on Bresson...
Hey i have a problem with mine, i cant set the asa to 100 and 50, i only get 200 and 400, do you have the solution? cause i like my gear to working properly haha, thanks
Oh okay haha, 1 more question, i have the same 53mm lens, do you need to recalibrate it before using it? Because mine seems a bit off at infinity focusing
Just purchased a 7 and my lenses screw past the center dot, is there a way to fix this? Im afraid it will mess up the rangefinder accuracy. I have 3 canon ltm lenses and all screw past the center dot
I just bought a Canon 7 and now I am looking for a good 50 mm lens and I just can’t decide which one to get. I have heard Voigtländer and Olympus have good lenses, is that right?
I have 4 Canon rangefinders, a 7, 7sZ, VI-T, and Canon P. I see you use the Jupiter 12 35mm lens. I was seriously thinking about getting one, but I worried about the deeply recessed rear element hitting the light baffles or the steel shutter curtain. Have you had issues using it on your Canon 7?
There is an interesting history to both Canon and Nikon, especially after WWII. Japan was recovering and both companies tried to emulate the Leica form, just as Zorki & Fed in the old Soviet Union. All of these rangefinders used the same thread mount as the Leica III rangefinder. The occupation GIs liked Japanese cameras because they were well made, had good optics and were affordable. The real Leica and Contax cameras were mostly out of reach for most GIs. Canon & Nikon (and Asahi Pentax ) were all commandeered by the Imperial Army & Navy during the war and could not make consumer cameras, so even making Leica facsimiles was a welcome restart. Someone should research and write a book to complement your Canon 7. Nice topic.
i still love it. literally no complaints other than the camera sagging up when you wear it around you neck haha. i do need to get my rangefinder calibrated tho
I think that animation of yours didn’t really point at the meter but rather at the rangefinder window? Beautiful camera! Stop comparing everything with Leica, they were the role model for those yes, but the Canons turned into their own beautiful thing. Saw so many of those in Japan also the lenses ... I regret not getting one.
hey. its begs a comparison to leica, that's what it was made to compete with after all. also, i want people who can't afford leica's to know that there are good alternatives 😊
@@ribsy Nothing wrong in what you said, can only agree to that. Might get a little defensive since a lot Leica comparisons provoke a "haha don't pay quadruple for the same thing!" sentiment. Which would be wrong, they're not the same. They're all special and great in their own way. And you are totally right: People CAN afford a camera cameras they can shoot with the same technique and mechanics as a Leica, there are great alternatives! Could maybe be better depends on who you ask!
@@ribsy soft is maybe even softwr than wide open, probably not enough to see on some rough grained film but every lens really handles different. This is due to a phenomenon called diffraction and every lense suffers from it. Newer lenses are slightly better tho, but not perfect either. Basically every lens has its peak performance and usually it's somewhere between f5.6 to f11 and for really old lenses it's around f8.
I've been shooting on Leica M5 for three years now. I've had an M8 and I had an M6 for the last half year. The M6 is so over rated and doesn't even compare to the M5 in terms of feel and ease of use. I recommended the Canon 7 to a friend and I have to say it really holds its own. Especially against the M6. Sure they're not in the same league but the Canon 7 is still a damn good rangefinder.
@@joeltunnah don’t get all defensive please, it was just a question. You’re entitled to your opinion, I was just asking if you have noticed something that may have eluded me as a Leica user for many years. Obviously, that isn’t the case.
@@brankokosteski I would level the same criticism at any overpriced camera. Is the Olympus OM3 worth $2000, no. But at least the Oly can be used with any focal length, without worrying about missing framelines, and still have accurate focusing without parallax errors or the lens/hood blocking your view. To each their own, I’ve never understood the rangefinder allure, and likely never will.
I recently bought the Canon 50mm f/1.4. It is an incredible, sharp and fast L39 (LTM) lens. Been shooting it on my Bessa R3a (with the M to LTM adapter). Produces beautiful, sharp images. Not that expensive? $300US.
They don't LOOK as good as a Leica, but the WORK as well. No need to raid your retirement account to get one, either. I have a Leica IIIc, and this is probably a better camera in every measurable way.
Let me explain the difference between a Leica rangefinder and a Canon rangefinder. If you go to a crowded photographic event and you are wearing a Canon rangefinder, ten dudes will approach you and commend you for your "awesome piece of kit!" (whatever that means). If you attend that same event and you are wearing a Leica rangefinder, those same ten dudes will approach you and commend you for your "awesome piece of kit!" and there will ten dudes trying to figure out how to shank you and steal your Leica. Now, if you are a woman wearing either rangefinder, 1000 dudes will commend you for your "awesome piece of kit!" and there will still be 10 dudes trying to steal the Leica. This is a universal law. There is a rule here, don't wear awesome, expensive stuff unless you want to get shanked and ripped off!
Yeah I feel you. I have Voigtlander Bessa R that have this kind of stupid place of strap holder. If you have bigger and longer lens pointing up, you will look like an idiot having an erection. Anyway, welcome to LTM world!
Good for you, bro! Cheers from Atlanta.. I have a Canon P that I very recently bought as a companion to my Leica M4.. I LOVE the Leica!! But to compare the two cameras (the Canon P is just like your lovely Canon 7, btw).. The Canon body is actually slightly heavier.. The finish on the Leica is ever slightly better.. But BOTH cameras are built like a tank! I too, am starting to focus more on Street Photography.. And I too, get a lil scared grabbing shots of strangers.. I also have several SLR film bodies, but i don't like them so much for street photography. As you said: too noisy, and too big. I'm a new subscriber.. Let'ts keep shooting! See some of my work on Flickr: w.flickr.com/photos/kbgray
yea! i really like how durable these rangefinders are. they feel like serious cameras - no plastic! i'm doing the same with street photography. trying my best to get good at it and lose some of the fear
@@ribsy unfortunately no, I have the Jupiter 12 for the 35mm range. I know the 35mm f2 is supposidly nice, but never tried it, and there is no knob for easy and fast focus, so I wouldnt pick this one. I think my choice would go to the serenar 35mm f3.2, even if it's a little slow, but rendering is amazing
The Canon ltm lenses are nice. However, many of them suffer greatly from haze, which if bad enough will affect the image and (unlike fungus) can't be removed. Be very careful about this when shopping for a Canon screw mount lens.
For the people that did not like the video - Question Can you afford a Leica, and pay Oh lets say $1500 and Up depending in which model, and as for the Lenses GOOD LUCK, Go Ahead Clean out your checking account as I seen a 50mm Leitz Summicron for $7000 at KEH !!! Think About that? and the RENT is due. Now does that means it is the Ultimate lens to use OR to SHOW OFF??, and as for me Yea I have a Canon 7 with a Russian 50mm Jupiter 50mm f2.0 in which it is the copy of the Zeiss Sonnar Lens in which that I find that the Russian optics are just better, and a tab more contrast, and easy to scan, as the only drawback is NO Flash Shoe!, as you have to get a flash bracket, I did see that Canon did made a flash shoe bracket, but is was very Ugly Design, and also have a 35mm Sankyo 2.8 in which it is super sharp, and along with a portrait lens a 105mm Sankyo 2.5, and again Super sharp as I am happy, along with my Canon that I got another Canon RF a Canon VT with the Trigger Wind, and also a Yashica YF as it is a Leica M3 Copy, and my Prize Babies, Zeiss Jena Contax II, and III with a 50mm 2.0, 35mm Biogon, and 85mm 2.0 Sonnar. So I am happy, save alot of Money, and did not clean out my checking account. As I use my Canon's, and Contax's wisely not to show off just owning a bit of photographic history... Good Video....

Most oem leather half cases are rotten as this point so the side lugs can easily rip out. I didn't trust it so I create my own.

Hello Ribsy, thx for the periodic film & foto updates. Is it that the Jupiter 12 has a fit problem in the Canon P, but not with the Canon 7? Or is it some manufacturers or series that have a better fit than others with Canon rangefinders? Thanks, and cheers!
Yea it works 100% fine on the 7. The P is the problem
can some flashes be used with it?
Maybe never tried it myself
I got a Canon 7 after my QL17 died and despite buying a Leica M2 later, I use the Canon more. The only advantage the Leica has as far as I can tell is ergonomics.
yea the c7 is a compelling option. it has helped calm my leica thirst haha
Nails are looking great bro!
You already know the regiment! 💅🏽
YASSSS! You may need to start a new channel to explain all your beauty secrets 🙌🏾
what a camera😍👌🏻
Right?!? It’s beautiful
I have this camera and had a minolta CLE and I actually preferred the viewfinder in the canon 7 big and beautiful 😍 but preferred the minolta CLE size and operation. The canon 7 is hard to say no to for the money so I sold the CLE and that's basically a leica m6 contender
yea this is a great camera. i love mine 😊
Did you make it your everyday camera?
Looking at getting one, trying to justify it haha
na i replaced it with the canon p
@@ribsy Why's that?
I mean, no it's not as good looking as a Leica but it's still a great camera. You can't go wrong with one, it'll do everything you need and still looks nice.
Na them fighting words 💪🏽😂
Honestly, I'm fed up about the "Leica thing". Even though they are good cameras, I think they are overvalued. A Canon 7 is a very good rangefinder.
LOL I feel you. But I really do appreciate the culture of photography that Leica has created
@@ribsy I agree with that.
that's the default opinion on leica by people who never used it. be more open minded than that :)
Dunno! I don’t use the meter 😅
I have 3 canon ltm lenses and all screw past the center dot
interesting. not sure! def get someone to take a look at it
@@ribsy ive got a test roll in it now so if its out of focus 100% going to take it so my local shop
Didn’t know about this camera but now I want to get it for a review for my channel!
Haha word 😊
I just bought a Canon 7 and now I am looking for a good 50 mm lens and I just can’t decide which one to get. I have heard Voigtländer and Olympus have good lenses, is that right?
not sure! ive only used the jupiter lens
Have you had issues using it on your Canon 7?
no big issue other than the rangefinder needs to be calibrated. the 35 lens has had no problems at all - don't be worried
Do the voigtlander screw mounts work with this?
i'm not sure sure. the canon 7 is the old leica mount, m39. maybe that helps
i believe so.
do you find the viewfinder easy to use for focusing?
I don’t actually. The strip is quite small for me. But I plan on zone focusing with this for the most part. Not my go to portrait camera
hey buddy!
Did you find a solution for the strap!?
so annoying
nope! haha the camera hung well when i borrowed the big heavy 50 0.95
@@ribsy makes totally sense!
I will let you know if i find a cheaper solution LOL
Nice topic.
Yea this makes a lot of sense. Imitation or not, this camera is awesome!
thx bro I'm looking at getting one of these bad boys and needed the review, how do you find it after a few months of shooting?
i still love it. literally no complaints other than the camera sagging up when you wear it around you neck haha. i do need to get my rangefinder calibrated tho
Are there any lens you recommend? I just got mine and I’m so lost when it comes to the M39 mount
Check out the Jupiter lenses. They are cheap but well built and have a nice look to them
Street Photo begins :p
yup! looking to learn something new 😊
@@ribsy im stalking you comments on sir Robin Channel xD
so i just waiting for this
I think that animation of yours didn’t really point at the meter but rather at the rangefinder window?
Could maybe be better depends on who you ask!
honestly tho, don't shoot at f16. Your photos will come out soft, I wouldn't go past f8 or even f5.6 for those real-old USSR lenses.
Hmm really? How soft is soft?
Sure they're not in the same league but the Canon 7 is still a damn good rangefinder.
yea ive never used a leica but i bet ill like it just as much - curious about the loading
@@ribsy Loading is actually quick once you get used to it.
Please don’t put your phone on the corner of the table like that again, gives me anxiety hahaha 😜. Love the video though!!
LOL sorry .. not tryna mess with ya
@@ribsy hahaha all good 🤙🏼
Yeah, I was keeping my eye on it!😯
Leica: a nice $500 camera that sells for $2500.😂
LOL 😂
have you ever shot with a leica m for an extended period?
@@brankokosteski no, which I’m sure completely disqualifies me from voicing an opinion.
$300US.
oh that sounds great! i will have to check it out. $300 isn't bad at all!
@@ribsy A fantastic review right here.

Just as good as the red dot hipster Camera
Haha I think so 🤐
Aw that sucks that your lens was taken. 😓
yea it was a bummer ... 😒
I have some earlier Canons, I feel exactly the same about them...far more interesting than the Leicas!
Yea the canons are cool
I have two 7s, both with Soviet lenses, a 50mm Industar-61 and ther other a 35mm lens like you have on yours
awesome! thats a great combo
Need a different style strap
Yea I think so
If you glue on a red dot, it'll definitely look like a Leica.
I thought about doing that ...
Subbed just bc of this video
Welcome
Nice :)
Thanks 😊
They don't LOOK as good as a Leica, but the WORK as well. No need to raid your retirement account to get one, either.
I have a Leica IIIc, and this is probably a better camera in every measurable way.
they def work as well!
Dude, I just ordered a Canon Vt. It caught my eye and it's an unusual film advancing thing. ;) You know if you know.
yea i actually just saw that one recently. very unique
I’d have the canon over a Leica,
No doubt.
Word 💪🏽
I'm sorry, the canon model 7 is sexy looking. More so than the Leica. The Leica is a status symbol. But you gotta now how to sport that status.
Haha
There is a rule here, don't wear awesome, expensive stuff unless you want to get shanked and ripped off!
haha fair enough!
This is just the gateway drug to the L wor(l)d haha. Also, a Leica will point the right way when on your neck #justsaying :)
Hahaha I will neither confirm nor deny that claim. 😅
Anybody else stressed out by the position of the phone?
Hahaha good shout
Yeah I feel you. I have Voigtlander Bessa R that have this kind of stupid place of strap holder. If you have bigger and longer lens pointing up, you will look like an idiot having an erection. Anyway, welcome to LTM world!
Hahaha yup. It says perfectly with their most expensive lense
See some of my work on Flickr: w.flickr.com/photos/kbgray
yea! i really like how durable these rangefinders are. they feel like serious cameras - no plastic!
i'm doing the same with street photography. trying my best to get good at it and lose some of the fear
got one, love it.
check the canon galss, i got a 50mm F2.2, it is an amazing lens. Cheap and sharp ! perfect with Ektar.
nice!! i'm hunting for a canon 35 lens. any recs?
Oh ,come on.Leica is a overpriced Hipster Camera for lonely divorced Dentist to get girls....
Hahaha
Preach!
I just bought one. Always wanted a rangefinder and this will be my first one.
Yea it’s great!
