    Thank you from the bottom of my heart for a really great recipe, and I have two questions: 1) What are the health benefits? What kind of rice flower should I use? It would be nice to call me specific,Roasted rice or cooked rice? Sal or fragrant rice without perfume

    • @MiddleEats
      @MiddleEats  3 года назад +2

      Health benefits? 🤣🤣 I mean it's probably healthier than hot chocolate, does that count. It's great for keeping warm in the winter.
      The rice flour is just plain regular rice flour, not cooked, not toasted, not perfumed. Hope that helps

      You could of course make this with any flavour you like. If you've never had taro before, you can get taro powder (supposed to be used for bubble tea) and replace the coconut with it. Taro tastes kind of like cookies, its a blissful flavor.

    This is great. I have a question/request. There are a couple things that I used to have that I wondered if you're familiar with and would possibly make a video of. The first I believe was called "sha'rea" - it's made with vermicelli and warm milk I believe. The next I don' know the name of but my mom used to make during Ramadan. It was a biscuit with a delicious layer of glazed butter and I believe coconut flakes on the top. Lastly, there was this sweet treat she used to make that had the consistency of dough - I believe it was called something like "halawa dee'ee". Thank you.

    • @MiddleEats
      @MiddleEats  3 года назад +3

      Sorry I missed this comment. So sha'rea just means vermicelli, there are some indian and gulfie desserts called Sevaya kheer, is this what you mean? I haven't heard of the biscuit, but I'll do some searching and see if I find something like that. With regards to the sweet treat, is it maybe Omani Halwa? What country is your mum from, maybe that will help my search.

    I am one of those people that cheerfully dislikes any coconut-based drinks, but I still want to try my hand at making this! Would I just use 1 1/2 cups of milk powder in the full recipe instead? Might try adding cinnamon to the mix as well to bring back some of the flavour that will be lost by avoiding the coconut.

    • @MiddleEats
      @MiddleEats  3 года назад

      Yes you'd use 1.5 cups of milk powder. Maybe you'd like the orange blossom one, or you can add a little cardamom. The cinnamon will be nice, we have a milk based cinnamon drink too but it's not thickened.

  • @deathpyre42

    Hypothetically, could something like chufa or taro or some other sort of nut/tuber work as a compromise between salep and cornstarch?

    • @MiddleEats
      @MiddleEats  3 года назад +1

      If it has enough starch to thicken the drink properly then yes. However you'd need to do some research to check the correct replacement ratio for corn starch. The benefit of corn starch is it has 0 flavour and is available world wide.

      No the incense is literal incense.. for smells. I bought the same ones from the spice section. Buy those incense.. then buy some small charcoals, the ones they use for hookah. Grind the incense into a powder. Light the charcoal until red hot, place it on something that's not flammable and then sprinkle the incense dust on the hot charcoal. It will start to smoke and make your house smell beautiful. Open some windows so you get a draft and push the smoke through your house. It is not edible.

    Why use American measurements when you're in the UK? Metric measurements are immeasurably better.

      So when it comes to a recipe such as a marinade or even this sahlab powder, having a really precise measurement is not really necessary. Most errors in precision won't make a difference to the end product unless they're off by a significant percentage. Give I don't need precision, it's easier to use Cup Tbsp and TSP measurements, than weighing everything in grams. If I'm baking however I always use grams, because being precise there really matters. It's also easier to visualize 1 cup of a spice or herb, than it is to visualize 100g. Each ingredient has a different density so they all take up different amounts of space. It's worth getting a set of measuring cups and spoons for cooking as it makes life a lot easier. Having to use a scale involves taking it out, getting a plate to measure the ingredient on, washing that plate, when with a TSP or measuring cup you can usually reuse them and then give them a quick rinse. Hope that helps.

      Like I said in the video, this is Egyptian sahlab just like we have it in Egypt. It's a replacement for real salep.

    Please don’t try this it’s sincerely the worst thing I’ve ever had in my whole life. This stuff tastes like what you’d get from mixing Donkey Kong’s milk with cinnamon. Absolutely GROSS

      @@Diablo12353 I love this beverage and wanted to try to make it myself... it wasn’t as great as what I have tasted before, there was too much sesame seeds and something about the mixture wasn’t good. :( I’ll try to adjust it next time though
