I love bjork so so much but when it comes to gloomy Sunday cover its always Venetian Snares for me!
But that's just a remix of Billie Holiday's version. It is pretty great though, but Bjork's sounds more heartfelt and painful to me, and therefore more true to what the song means.

Love this song badly
I remember my parents telling me when I was a small child in the Balkans about this particular Hungarian song, which drove many people to kill themselves. The song being played on the radio was probably what brought the subject up. I had a hard time figuring out how a single song would do that, and I still don't get it. On the other hand, I have read that Hungarians are more prone to suicide than other ethnic groups, and this is partly caused by a wind that periodically blows into the country from the Alps.

It’s not originally Billie Holidays. The song was written by Rezso Seress, who is Hungarian. It was then translated into english. I would highly recommend listening to Mel Tormes version as well (my personal favorite).

@Leo Moore Sarah's is a utter disappointment compared to this one and her peers like billie holiday. She removes the song of all emotion and is easily the worst version of the song ever made. I pray that one day you care about music for the emotion and not just cheap sellout money.
