    Guy if i may suggest something from a consumer. When you sell a run of knives dont make people pay full price. You have alot of customers who have bought knives at full retail, and haven't received the knife for over a year.

      We will actually have some in stock availability starting next week, of our EDC-4 model. In stock has always been the plan.

    Cool. So, are you going to give me my money back? I've been requesting it. I don't want a different model or material.

    • @Surviveknives

      We are still fulfilling all open orders, as they were placed. Due to things, I've already mentioned, they are just taking a little extra time to wrap up. Most everything is at the end of production now, so things are shipping out.

      Laurence I've been paying alot closer attention to the videos now and he didnt say in any you couldnt still get it in the steel you ordered. But if you watch the videos its clear multiple suppliers did not meet their obligations and cost him money and TIME. When you fabricate a knife and find issues after all the machining you not only lose the material but also the production time as well as having to push everything else back because now it takes double the time to make the original product due to 2 runs through the shop. Also having to absorb 250k in cost is alot of money but that has to be months of time lost and then pushing everything out of order. Also you have to reorder materials which arent always on the shelf ar your suppliers so you may have to wait for another mill run. I have a small business as well and honestly I dont know how he is hanging in there but he is and he hasnt compromised on quality. I will continue to purchase product from him as long as he keeps up the quality. If it drops well then I cant support that. I keep seeing people making comments that were answered in multiple videos. Everyone has an opinion but it seems there are alot of uninformed opinions based on feelings and not chasing down the facts.

    Thank you for not signing an NDA and for staying strong while others in the industry are peer pressuring you to quiet down. I would rather have homogenous steel than just trust that I have homogenous steel.

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  7 месяцев назад +3

      At the end of the day, I serve you guys. If they made an offer that allowed me to walk away from this Magnacut, I would do it. I just want to make knives but in the face of these issues, I need to speak up about what we are seeing here. I need to show you exactly what we are seeing, so things make sense. I won't sign an NDA while still needing to work through these issues. That is ridiculous.
      At this point,everyone has been very supportive, so it's just more important to me to get down to the facts of what is going on.

    I've been following most of your posts, but have a noob question - Is Niagra SM the only exclusive supplier of CPM materials? If there are others, do they also share similar issues or not. i.e. is NSM the issue or CPM? soz if stupid Question.

    • @Surviveknives

      Yes, they are the exclusive supplier of hot rolled CPM products. If you are getting material from some other supplier, it still comes from them.

    Guy when you spoke to the decarb and it being such a large amount of money, does that mean that a large amount of blades were decarbed? If so is that why there was such a large delay in the magnacut blades being finished? Peters is known as a good heat treater in glad to hear at least one of your sub contractors is owning their mistakes and showing integrity...make sure you keep with them

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  7 месяцев назад

      Yes, this ended up being 850 or so parts. It wiped out all of our production and is a situation we have still not fully recovered from. The things we could save were not suitable to fulfill the orders as they were, so we did the best we could to redirect. It was still a huge setback.
      I don't enjoy involving insurance, but at this point, that may be my only option. The liability for that is clearly on Peters. I don't mean to harm our relationship, but I also can't let this situation and the other things with these materials completely ruin us.
      Like a friend told me yesterday, I am trying to be kind, but that was not reciprocated by any of the involved parties. You can see the big disclaimer on Peters' website now regarding Magnacut, they very much do not want to work with this material.

    ok, if thicker steels are on hold for now, please make some EDC 3 in scandi. :)

  • @whiterock1865
    @whiterock1865 7 месяцев назад +1

    I watched the video and interesting how he said you only left 5 thousandths in your heat treated blanks for grinding, implying that you should have left more thickness therefore making it so you could grind off the decarb...so my question to him is how thick is acceptable for decarb, and is the decarb a consistent thickness in all of its instances...and then would thicker sheets cost more knowing that decarb is an issue? And should crucible charge less per pound knowing that more surface needs to be ground off to remove the decarb? Lots of questions too.

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  7 месяцев назад +1

      With a vacuum furnace heat treat there should functionally be ZERO decarb. We leave parts .005"-.006" for finish grinding and flattening. That is TWICE the allowance that Millit Knives left and subsequently Chris Reeve Knives, as Millit learned all of their lessons from their time at that larger company.
      Decarb occurs when atmospheric contaminants are present in the furnace at high temperatures. That is why these parts should not have been stress relieved in a non-vacuum furnace.
      A vacuum furnace is purged of all atmosphere, being replaced with an inert gas. This insures a high level of part cleanliness and no chance of a complex steel like Magnacut becoming decarburized.
      We did NOT ask for the stress relieving process that was added at Heat Treat, so therefore, the liability for this decarb issue does fall solely on Peters Heat treating. They added this step on their own initiative, for a short time, trying to address high levels of part warping they were encountering. I can understand their frustration, but the situation was an oversight.
      They admitted fault though and corrected their process for moving forward. Due to the extent of the damage that happened though, with 800+ parts being ruined, this really hurt us and our momentum. I just try not to punish people if they can see where they went wrong and have learned a lesson.
      My attorney said that I am too nice, and I need to do what is best for the business, so I am pursuing all options at this point. There is what I believe personally, and what the business needs, so the best business decision is going to have to win the day here. This kind of situation is exactly what insurance exists for.
      I hope that is enough of an explanation. If not, reach out and ask me any follow up questions you might have. 🤓

    @20:16 "you subject a knife to a lot of stresses, so that's where I am really crazy about the parts being homogeneous and good... I want to make sure that I am giving them something that is going to work... I just have really high standards." --this has been evident to me, and is a big reason why it is worth it to me to be patient for your knives. You care about what you are putting in our hands and I believe you are being open and honest with us. You have my support!

    What boggles the mind is that crucible and niagara should truly appreciate your feedback and work with their customers to fix the deficiencies in THEIR production process. EVERYONE could forgive them for owning their mistakes and fixing them and helping the small companies out...but here they are resisting any meaningful solution...you know why, likely because THEY KNOW their product is deficient and either can't or won't fix it likely due to the expense...or if they acknowledge it they're worried all the makers are going to come at them. If they continue to use the "hand" as their complaints department, this is going to cost them a lot more. I wonder what fraction of their business are knife/tool makers? So either the management is stubbornly ego driven or they're listening to poor legal advice, but I see a reckoning headed their way as this is a very loyal industry and if that loyalty is violated...well guess we need to start writing our senators and reps to remove european steel over a certain thickness from the punitive tariffs.

    Hope you had a Great Birthday. If I ordered a GSO-4.5 Standard in K890 when realistically could I expect to receive it ? I have received 5 of the 7 knives I have pre-ordered and one you told me I'd get in 15 days another EDC-4 in Elmax. I love the EDC-4 K890 I have received. I've already talked to you about my 5.1 I'm weighing on like others. I really do love the knives you put out or I wouldn't have sent 3 more of them to Choirboyz Outdoors to do reviews on them. I'm asking about the GSO 4.5 because I want to order one but don't want to be asking you where it is this time next year. Thanks, Guy I truly hope everything keeps going down the right road for you now.

    Hi Guy!
    Do the thing that is necessary to keep the business alive! If that's more EDC4's than go for it!
    On the other hand - in many European countries like mine - the only legally allowed blade length on the streets is 8 cm max. So it would be EDC 3. I think ppl would appreciate if you could keep that one in stock too in the near future.
    I think, 12 cm's is a way more useful length for daily tasks - but anyhow. We have to live with it even if it's a totally non-logical BS law.
    Keep it up and happy birthday!

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  7 месяцев назад

      When Magnacut came out, we converted those 20CV orders to that material. As you can see in older and newer photos and videos, we were having problems with what I believe to be macro alloy segregation, that was revealing itself in finishing. It was explained as chunky carbides, I didn't like that answer, so we stopped using it. Once I understood what I was looking at, I never trusted that material again.

      @Surviveknives  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yep, I reached out and he said that it wasn't his intention to necessarily attack me or anything we are doing, but rather highlight his success with the material. He apologized if anyone took the information in a negative way.
      He is only two hours from us, I invited him down to the shop if he would like to stop by. The most telling thing for me, though is the fact that the only way I will get compensation for this issue is if I sign a nondisclosure agreement, NDA,regarding what I am seeing and remove all content and criticisms of the CPM materials. Niagara specialty metals claims to have reports that support their warranty denial, but will not show me the reports, and will not return my samples for independent evaluation.
      So, we are having independent evaluations done by some very large companies, and I will be sharing the findings as soon as the investigations are concluded.

      @Surviveknives  7 месяцев назад +5

      We are not doing anything wrong here. Even in denying our warranty claim, Niagara cannot tell us what we are doing wrong, because we are not doing anything wrong. They will not furnish reports to support their claims, nor will they return our samples for independent evaluation. The only thing they have done is offer us a small amount of money to sign an NDA. I don't know how these pieces are so hard for some people to put together.
      We are consulting with several metallurgist on this, some of whom used to work at Crucible and understand some of the shortcomings in the manufacturing there.
      People can have their opinions, but not their facts. When the reports come back, all of this will be cleared up, I will be relying on expert interpretations of the data, so I will just be conveying what they tell me. Unlike some others on the Internet, I like to stand on data and evidence, not my opinions.

      As a follow up, that guy deleted every single one of my responses to his content. For having no dog in this fight, as he claimed, that is a strange position.
      That entire thing looked more like a CPM marketing video, over an actual information video. He is only a 2 hour drive from my shop, I offered for him to come visit anytime. We have an open door policy here. Rather than standing on his opinions and false equivalencies, I would love for him to come down and get informed.
      Since he won't respond to any of my messages, and he is deleting my comments, maybe send him a message, letting him know he is invited to come here.
      Again, it's a quick morning drive. That would clear up a lot.

      No, they are just a bit more tedious to get finished out, and the instances of voids are a higher percentage than I would like. We are getting them done though, no worries there.

      Thank you! At 44, it just felt like another day. It was a beautiful day to go pick up parts though.

    I often wonder how many other makers have made the switch to Bohler materials from CPM and just been quiet about it

      I'm very excited to get the material reports back from the labs, and once they have been interpreted by several metallurgists, we will make a video talking about their findings. I want to rely on experts for this.
