After she is taken away by Edith, he struggles to connect with her at all until the end of his life. I think his work is the only reason he found a connection and love for his daughter and Katherine, so while it might seem negative that he is only focused on his work and nothing else, it does open doors for him and helps him find love :) like you or the author said, it is his identity.
