Classic. I love camcorder footage. I was not even 5 years old back then, but I remember beautiful Vancouver and New Westminster. Both were so much better back then.
@delfunker Calgary blows, Edmonton blows same with Saskatoon and Regina to Winnipeg. Toronto is the drizzling shits like Montreal. St John's, Halifax, Moncton and Charlottetown are awful.
@Skunky Stinkerson Gordon Campbell had a part to play in it as well they have ruined this economy and sadly it's only gonna get so much worse as time goes on.
@Skunky Stinkerson It's very sad too because we are sitting on one of the biggest real estate bubbles in the world as well and I firmly believe that BC especially the lower mainland will be a 3rd world renters slum.
I'm myself an immigrant and have visited Vancouver but I have to say that I hate what North America has become, thats doesn't mean necessarily anti-immigrant but I believe that countries should remain at core what they are and have been historically, thats is what made them strong. Countries like Canada or the US or Australia are in great danger to completely change what they have been in the next 2 decades. Don't get me wrong, I believe immigrants make great contributions but I do not like when countries or cities start being invaded and the people who lived there before start feeling like foreigners in their own land
One could actually afford to live there places werent overbuilt with the same ugly cookie cutter condos and overall social credit was a better system for BC than this absolute clusterfuck of puppetry and corruption we have now
@@maxplease9323 Hard disagree. I live in New West and no way does the river market or boardwalk feel remotely the same today. Also can't remember the last time I heard buskers. Pretty sure it's illegal now for whatever reason.
Last year of Social Credit era British Columbia. Things looked so much friendlier cleaner and safer in Vancouver then. Well Vancouver isn't that dangerous compared to many other cities but it was certainly friendlier then and an actual place for people to live not just for real estate to be flipped Theres just something I find charming in the things left over from that time like some of the Hydro interpretive centers or the unrenovated Skytrain stations or few old BCparks signs hand carved out of wood that havent been replaced by metal ones. They just exude a kind of lost optimism. Like reminders of a dream that nobody really remembers.
Scot Foley honestly it started in 1991 with the end of the SoCred era though it wasn't as noticeable at the time by the statistics the 90s is when the decline started. All of BC has gone downhill from that time Vancouver has suffered the most decline though
Funny you should mention that, a while ago I was looking up old footage from the 2011 riots, and I clicked on a video, and the first 30 seconds of it was just my Dad walking by the camera lens with a "wtf" expression on his face, was priceless!
It's so nice to see everyone walking around properly dressed and not wearing ripped jeans and gawking at those bloody cell phones, if you notice people are actually socializing with each other. I was born in Vancouver and it would be nice to go back to those days 80 years ago.
I was only 6 back in 1990 and I remember my parents walking me through Vancouver everytime we visited and it's times like these I miss the most. I miss The Vancouver and BC from 1990 to 2002.
In a way this is a bit sad. BC lost so much from this time. Now it's all just about money and Vancouver is being ruined by being sold out just for a quick buck. The city is no longer for its people it's just something to be sold off like it was some commodity. We had much better leaders a much better system back then in BC. Work for most everyone who could work decent help if you weren't able or were sick homes you could actually afford to live in pretty comfortably not just scraping by month to month. If only more people had actually looked at what they had and not just voted for change just for changes sake
@@EastVanGuy7 Not at all. Housing was for the people of BC not to be flipped. Projects were built for the people of BC not to be sold to corporations. Seeing the Westminster Quay back in 1990 made me so sad. It seemed so full of life and joy and was even crowded leaving me wondering why the place shut down into a condemmed building it is today.
Not sure why so many people dislike Vancouver now. I'm an hour away, I still love visiting Vancouver all the time! There's definitely more crackheads walking around but that's because how big the city has gotten & how expensive. Vancouver is still a great city. Its better when you live just outside because then the city doesn't get boring! Even with all the traffic, bad driving etc.
@Maxmulham It's not actually shut down. They were renovating it. It took them about four years, but they're finally finished. It's nothing like what it used to be, but at least it still exists. The top floor houses the Vancouver Circus School and some offices, and the bottom floor has some little mall-style trinket shops and a trendy supermarket at one end. Still wish it was the way it used to be.
So King George was originally going to be called "Walley"? Also a train to white rock? we dont even have that today. Time traveler? Hopefully this confirms more extensions end up being built
It's a shame, I can't speak for back in 1990 but Vancouver sure lacks culture today. I have to work in the city, and I hate every minute of being in Vancouver.
Been here all my life 55 years still beautiful in this video. Now it 2023 and I can’t wait to leave this overpriced overcrowded drug and crime infested Dump!!

Thanks for the post. I agree with those who feel that the old Vancouver was much better than the current one.
oh why is that? because there were less immigrants?

this is insane! I just visited Vancouver, things have changed a lot
Thanks for this, it shows how the transit system has changed through the years
That's exactly what I thought too when I saw the skytrain part. Compared to the growth of the city it is really ridiculous.
omg theres actual people at the quay?!

for the worse
There was a parking lot at the Quay?? It looks so different now wow
when I was back in Vancouver last year went to lookup teh quay but kept thinking I was looking in wrong area. What a loss

It's not shut down. It's just way more quiet.
when I was in Van this past May, I tried to find it, but kept thinking I'd gotten my directions wrong. Sad how it turned out.
1:14 FYI, a second bridge was added in 1960 to connect the north shore. Known as the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge or "second narrows"
What blows me away the most about this is how quiet and "dead" it is. So different now with the population increased since 1990
Thats how I remember Vancouver. The streets were quieter and less crowded.
That's the Vancouver I miss the most.
What I wouldn’t give to spend 1 day in that Vancouver

its crazy to see no phones, headphones in sight
At 5:55 at the bottom right. Is that a bowling alley?
If you had turned your camera to the right you would have seen a second bridge connection to north vancouver
I wish they kept the red seats on the Mark 1 lol
