April 17, 1975 when the Pol Pot forces took over the country and we were forced to leave the city. I was in my last year of my high school and suddenly every was changed and we were sent to work in the rice fields in countryside. Unfortunately, most of my family members did not survive by the end of 1979. My first return trip to PP was in 1995 when it was officially open to the outside world. I was able to find my sole surviving sister there and the rest of them were dead. It seems just like yesterday and the country has changed so much, hopefully for the better. I've returned to visit my sister very year for the last ten years since my retirement from my work in Minnesota. Be mindful and be happy of what we have now. Life is short to do the things we don't love doing. Happy travels from a genocide survivor. Cheers 🍷

During Khmer New Year, people are likely to go on trips or gather at their elders' houses at their homeland to celebrate the new year together. I got the whole street to myself, no traffic jam. lol

Been to SE Asia 3 times, but never Cambodia. Want to go to Angkor next year and the more I see PP videos, there too. As a fellow Canadian I usually stop in Kingston (and make some bad Tragically Hip jokes to my son) for lunch (he loves Popeye's which is not in Quebec) going from Montreal to visit family and friends who have absconded to TO.

Hi Dan, thats so great you have been able to come to SE Asia 3 times! We would recommend cambodia for sure! Make sure you visit the islands and Kampot as well if you come :) We love Kingston so we are so happy you make a little stop on your way through. There are some really great restaurants downtown if you have the time to go.
