    A tip to save some money when visiting Amsterdam: the public transport system is amazing, so it's really doable to find a hotel in a town or city outside of Amsterdam and then travel there. For example: Haarlem (15 minutes by train) or Utrecht (20 minutes by train). Bonus: those cities are worth visiting in their own right, and not as overrun by tourists as Amsterdam.

It became a royal palace only in the 19th century (after Napoleon put his brother Lodewijk Napoleon in the newly created throne of the short-lived Kingdom of Holland in the 1790's). Before that, the Netherlands was a republic for over two and a half centuries (the Dutch Republic)

    The green birds in the (Vondel) park are indeed real parakeets (ring-necked parakeets) and they are in the thousends in most of the bigger cities in the Netherlands. Even becoming somewhat of a problem for the local birds, because of destroyng some of their food supply (damage on trees and such) ps The bikes ending up in the canals, i assure you they mostly didn't fall in, but rather were thrown in by (often drunk) people.

    But if you do come again, don't go where everybody tells you to go. There are so many more nice things to see without a line in front. Just go where the regular Dutch go. Buy your Stroopwafel at the Albert Heijn grocery. But even better: try to visit Utrecht, Haarlem, Delft or Leiden. Those are smaller cities (a little) less tourists and cheaper. Or go (by train) to the more eastern (and also much older) cities in the eastern part of the Netherlands, like Den Bosch, Nijmegen, Arnhem, Zutphen, Deventer, Zwolle or Groningen. I'm sure you will appreciate those places even more. And of course: rent a bike to explore or even make a bicycle day trip from one city to another.

    How to pronounce Stroopwafels like a true Dutch person: A double "oo" in Dutch is a long o in English, like in "Yo" for example. A single "o" is a short o like in "stop". How you pronounce "oo" in English is written in Dutch like "oe". So what most English speakers say sounds to us Dutch people as Stroepwafels, which is kind of adorable, but like I said, not how we say it. And for example the English word "poop" is written in Dutch as "poep" but pronounced exactly the same.

The Randstad is the biggest megalopolis of Europe and it is the economical heart of The Netherlands, where the most Dutch citizens live). Also here in Utrecht. Amsterdam is very popular. It is a BEAUTIFULL city with loads of architecture and culture, thousands of shops restaurants and cafés, parks, canals, etc. etc. Only a small group of people from the rural provinces and other cities are envious of Amsterdam's succes with tourists.

      I do like my hometown in Brabant, but I think Amsterdam is a great place. There is perhaps a bit overkill of tourism but the buildings, Amsterdam school, the punk history the graffiti era in the eighties, the local language. I Love it

    • @Ronnet
      @Ronnet 5 месяцев назад

      Like you said, it's full of tourists and also house prices are sky high over there. So it's popular among tourists and citizens. By what metric is it not popular? It's the biggest city so it's also likely to have the most detractors. But by that logic Taylor swift isn't a popular artist because a bunch of republicans don't like her.

    Amsterdam is a tourist trap, especially the city centre.
    And even as a foreigner you should be able to tell it is. Everyone speaks English. In hoe many Dutch towns do you think English is the primary language?
    There is a place in Amsterdam where they sell stroopwafels for €15 per stroopwafel. How many Dutch people do you think would pay that?
    A couple of years ago I went there with school to visit some museums and a simple hot chocolate milk was €5. That is double the normal price for cafés! Sports clubs will proboubly charge only €1 or so, maybe €1,50 because of inflation.
    Stelletje afzetters daar!

      Yep, en weer een boze en verongelijkte "Hollander" in de kleinste en domste betekenis van het woord, die schijt op zijn eigen hoofdstad en zijn eigen land bezoedelt. Nee. Amsterdam is GEEN "tourist trap". Natuurlijk zijn er winkels die zich richten op toeristen. Maar de stad is zoveel groter en rijker dan dat, met zoveel mooie architectuur, museums, theater parken, duizenden winkels etc. En dat ga jij lekker allemaal lopen afzeiken. Ga toch lekker terug naar je provinciale gatje, Calimero.

      Was in Amsterdam with some foreign visitors last week and it was still pretty affordable tbh. Like 3-4€ for a fresh stroopwafel at Albert Cuyp and 3€ for a pack that would be about 2.30 in the supermarket. Drinks on terraces also weren't outrageously expensive, neither in De Pijp or the city center. But my guests did like Leiden more then Amsterdam.
