I am not a plant mom, I am a mom of a plant mom. My 17 year old daughter is totally a plant mom. She started out with a couple and over the past two years she has grown her collection hugely. Now my kitchen counter looks like your piano with all of her plants taking over. We have plants in just about every room in the house now, and her bedroom is like a jungle. She's on plant Facebook groups and wanting to go to plant open houses. Her teachers keep giving her cuttings of their plants. I had to put my foot down and tell her no more plants for a while, she's going to college next year and guess who'll be taking care of all these plants? That's right plant Grandma that's who. 🤣

I realised I was taking my plants seriously when I started running around taking all my indoor plants outside whenever it rained or stormed so they could get "quality rain water," not sure if that's a thing for other plant mums, but it is for me. I also worry about them when I go away and put my water loving plants in the bath tub and shower sitting all their little bottoms in a bit of water.

    • @moderndaymom7024

Totally a thing. I'm not a plant mom but we are avid gardeners and we save rain water because our lawn and our garden does so much better after it rains. Like we have barrels hooked up where water will drain from it we collect it and then use that to water our garden.

I find most plants like to dry out not completely but dry enough that it isn't moist. Then drench them till water comes through the bottom. Earthworm castings or fish emulsion I use for fertilizer. All plants love light. Low light does not mean no light at all. Just not direct light on ferns. They'll burn the leaves. Good luck

One tip. Diatomaceous Earth. If kills fungus gnats. Even if you "bottom water" you're likely to get them. They're a lot like fruit flies. You just sprinkle DE on the top of the soil, or a small plate around your plants. On the small plate, place a small cap of Apple cider vinegar to attract the flies. There's a lot of ways people use it. I've learned from people in Facebook groups. I just sprinkle some on top of dryish soil.

Be sure, though, to wear a mask when you put it at the base of the plant. it will kill bugs that crawl up the plant. its harmful if inhaled, though, so just put on that old n95 mask you've been saving for the few seconds it takes to put it on. i use it outside for all of my rose bushes. you have to reapply it after it gets wet, though. Have fun!
(yes, i must admit to putting plants together for half days etc. and some touch others all the time. if they are similar plants, they seem to thrive. !

Crispy edges on the leaves means the humidity is too low. Always always ALWAYS make sure your plants can drain well - never let them sit in water (especially not Violet there... ;-) ) If in doubt, WAIT. Thick leaves = succulents; they need to be in sandy soil. Always wash your hands before working with your plants; also be sure to clean your tools after you're done, ESPECIALLY if you've been working outdoors. And quarantine new plants until you're sure they're pest free.
Most important advice: Relax and enjoy them. And yeah, talk (and sing) to them. They like it - you can ask 'em ;-)

If those conditions match where you're wanting to put the plant, you're good to go! If not, there is another plant out there that will fit those conditions. Keep looking!

Basil is an annual and doesn’t usually last. Mint is an excellent plant to start with because they are not too picky and even if you think it is dead, you will find it will come back. Chocolate mint is especially hardy and hard to kill. If you put it in your yard place it is in a container or isolated area or it will take over.

When in doubt, switch it out - the soil that is. Make sure you use the right soil for the right kind of plants. EG: Succulents need cactus and succulent soil. Herbs will need an indoor garden soil or mix or use garden soil mixed with house plant soil for indoor herbs. You'll also need to follow the same idea with fertilizers - herbs need vegetable fertilizer, house plants Miracle Grow or Peter's or some such. Don't feed too much or too often once a month and only a small amount the water should barely color at all with most fertilizers in the right dilution. Use the right size pot. Like kids plants grow out of their "clothes" so you will have to replace their pots and soil from time to time. Always use good soil mixes as they are usually free of diseases that could kill you plants. Make sure the pot itself is clean before potting or re-potting. Round, uncolored aquarium pebbles make great drainage material for the bottom inch of your pots, and activated charcoal pellets for aquariums can be mixed into those for even better results, both are sterile so won't bring in problems. Don't over water, don't underwater and those amounts and timings will be different with different types of plants and their soil. Make sure you plants get enough of the right light exposure. Plants can sunburn just like us, so don;t put your houseplants outside in the sun. That said, putting them on a shaded porch where the direct sun can't hit them can allow them to put on extra growth during the summer months. Sign me the plant lady - I used to work in a greenhouse and took care of plants in businesses in Silicon Valley.

Places like Lowe’s (and I believe Home Depot?) usually have a discounted section for plants that have not been loved at the stores 🙁 and sometimes they just need watering or pruning or repotting and some TLC and they bounce right back! Usually good discounts too if you are serious about this ‘obsession’. Good thing is you can give away plants to a school or maybe church.
Now, can’t wait for the vlog where you all plant a home garden in the backyard and use your plants/herbs for cooking/salads/etc! Plant Mom Tip: Make 3 garden boxes (4’x4’ or 5’x5’ are good sizes for a variety of plants, get some ready made or hammer some wood together yourself) and plant herbs in one, veggies in another, and wildflowers and butterfly/bee friendly plants and flowers in the last. Mother Nature will thank you!🥦🥬🥕🥒🌶🫑🧅🧄🍅🍓🥔🥗 (Don’t plant by your back door unless you want butterflies and bees in the house! 🐝 🦋

I was the Plant Lady at work, with a literal jungle in my cube. At home I only had a decade-old Christmas Cactus (grew her from a single leaf!) and an aloe (oh, and several tanks of aquatic plants, but that's ANOTHER story....). When the Pandemic hit, I went to the office the second weekend to move all my plants into the lobby so the receptionist (only person required to be on site to handle phone calls) could water them. We thought it would last a few weeks. ONE YEAR LATER I get an email saying "Um, hi... I don't feel like I am able to give your plants the love they need anymore...can you take them HOME?" So I did, and had to build a shelf in my home office to house all of them because it's the only place safe from the cats. Before I got the shelf up, one of the cats did completely eat my spiderplant, but she's coming back now. At work I had a whole watering/feeding schedule and taking care of them during my breaks was my "me" time. Here, I have to make sure my son has done something school related between breaks, the cats haven't destroyed anything, the husband has an audience for his dad jokes, etc, so the plants are taking a back seat. I remember to water them once a week...maybe? But they're plants, and so far they're doing OK :P

My process is to add a bunch of little plants, nothing too expensive, then water them all once a week, regardless of their needs. It’’s survival of the fittest, and those that can live with my schedule survive. Those that are too finicky, don’t survive. 2 to 3 years later, repot all of them with some fresh soil and slightly larger pots. Take cuttings of the ones that become leggy or overgrown and start the cuttings in water, then move them to new little pots. When you find you have no more space for all the plants, give some away and toss the ones that are looking sad. If you move, only take a few with you. Your friends or family will be happy to take on a few of the good ones and you can start all over in your new home. I have a large benjamina tree taking up the corner of the living room that I grew from a tiny plant fifteen years ago.

Aloes like to wait forever before they receive water. If you recently watered it and it’s leaves are squishy, hold off on the water. It has way too much. If you haven’t watered in a long time and it’s leaves are starting to get squishy it means it needs more water. I know that sounds contradictory, but it has worked for my aloe. Keep in mind that aloes are desert plants and are used to super dry arid places. Better to hold off on water than to over water. They like deep soaks then nothing for like months. My aloe is just now needing watered after four months of none. Also they like to be in small pots. My 2 foot wide aloe is in a 5inch pot and it loves it there.
