    My two big things:
    1. Chilli in an hour from *dried* beans.
    2. Throw in a whole frozen chicken/roast/etc. and it will cook it perfectly.

I have to tell you that being in Phoenix, AZ with record-breaking heat this year the Instant Pot was a lifesaver when we were trying to make dinner without heating up the house. I am Stage 5 for sure. I started with a generic pressure cooker then upgraded to the 8 qt Instant Pot. Last Christmas my whole wish list was Instant Pot accessories.

From the same situation in Las Vegas this year. I don't have the pressure cooker, but I have the counter top roaster/crock pot version and I use it a LOT. Not only is it hot here, but our kitchen doesn't have a vent, so all that hot air from the oven just vents into the house, so oven cooking during the hot months (8 months out of the year) is a no-no. Today was finally nice enough to make cookies for the kids.

They say you can make cake in the IP. Never tried though.
Same story here, got a 'similar model's first and it was great but the button labels were not readable. So you could only use rice and meat. Upgraded to the duo and love it.

  • @cass_p
    @cass_p 3 года назад +73

I am totally at stage 5 (although ours is a generic pressure cooker, not an official instant pot) - have you tried cooking big chunks of meat from frozen? Throw some frozen chicken breasts in, a can of tomatoes and some seasonings, boom. You've got chicken you can literally shred with a spoon, stir it all up and serve it over rice (made in my sistema microwave rice cooker, which is another thing I'm stage 5 at) and you've got a delicious dinner with basically no work and precisely zero babysitting.
After the holidays we like to go to the store and buy all the discounted turkey crowns, hams, etc. Bone in or boneless, as long as its small enough to fit in the pot, we get it and stick it in the freezer. No more filling up the sink with a defrosting chunk of meat (that the cats will inevitably get into) - just straight into the pot. Sometimes we'll just cook up a hunk of random meat, shred it and put it in the fridge - great for healthy snacking when you're stuck in the house.

    • @Huddie400

@@Huddie400 About 20-30 minutes, depending on the number of breasts. Let the steam release naturally rather than opening the valve - that takes 20 ish minutes (I've literally never timed it, just gone about my life while I wait)

I place 6-8 frozen chicken tenderloin in the InstantPot, sprinkle them with 1 tablespoon of taco seasoning, and then cover with 16 ounces of medium restaurant-style salsa. Cook on high pressure for 25 minutes. At the same time, I cook 2 cups of white rice in my rice cooker. When the InstantPot completes, do a quick release. The chicken shreds very easily. I place that on top of the rice, then place sharp cheddar on top of each serving. Sour cream is optional.

    • @lauradi308
      @lauradi308 3 года назад +2

I use chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts - I find the texture/flavor is better and thighs are much more forgiving (breasts can get kinda dry & stringy even in the IP if you’re not careful - I tend to prefer chicken breasts coming out of the sous vide bath.) Pulled pork, though - ==chef’s kiss== Thing. Of . Beauty.

We are a two-teacher household, and in the chaos of the morning we are notorious for forgetting to get (insert dinner item here) out of the freezer. Lately when we come home cooking is the LAST thing we want to do - but the Instant Pot makes a super delicious incredible meal in a fraction of the time, unlike the crockpot. How many times have you walked in the door expecting ti have that aroma of whatever has been gradually been simmering all day in your crockpot, and then.....nothing? You forgot to turn it on! Perfect topic!! I just used my pressure cooker three days ago and the food is awesome. I found a bag of barley, mixed creamed corn, chili tomatoes, black beans, mushroom pieces and ripe olives. I set the cooker on Bean/Chili, loaded the clothes in the dryer and went in the bathroom to get ready for the day. When I was finished in the bathroom; the 'mess' in the cooker and the clothes in the dryer were both finished. I am on my third pressure cooker in the last two years. One malfunctioned and the manufacturer replaced it. (It was still under warranty.) The second, I didn't release the steam and broke the lid by trying to open it under pressure. So far the third cooker works perfectly. I like the fact that I can do other things around the house and not worry about the food that's cooking. The video is accurate and funny and an instant classic. Thank you.

This made me laugh because I bought mine 6 years ago before it was popular and before there were recipes or videos online. I was so afraid to use it that I didn’t do anything with it for a whole year! The steam is scary too. Now that I DO use it, I love the rice function, I do a ton of soups (which could be done in a stock pot, admittedly) and I like that it cooks meat to a crock pot tender point, but that it is faster.

  • @Nairnyn

There are a lot of things that may take the same amount of time, but there are also a lot of things that take much less! Example - my hungarian goulash recipe takes 3 to 3 1/2 hours to cook on the stove top. From start to finish, I made it in the instant pot in less than an hour.
Roasts that can take upwards of 8 hours in an oven or crock pot take about an hour in the instant pot, and the meat is more tender I have found.
Plus the ability to have a dinner made quickly when I've forgotten to defrost anything, but can use frozen chicken in an instant pot recipe is fantastic.
The instant pot isn't meant to replace the stove for every recipe, but for some meals it is a game changer!

I love the instant pot!! I own two and use them both several times per week. I enjoy the fact that when I forget to take meat out to thaw, I can still have supper ready in less than an hour!! I also love that I don’t have to “babysit” my food. I homeschool 5 boys ages 6 to 15 so we eat alot but I don’t have alot of extra time to actually cook. I recently made mashed potatoes in it. It’s so easy! I scrubbed my potatoes, poked holes in them, put them in the instant pot, covered them with water, set to manual for an hour and while I taught math, our potatoes were being cooked and switched to low without any supervision!! All I had to do at lunch time was scoop them out, throw em in my standup mixer, add butter, milk and salt and voila! SO much easier and faster than having to peel and cut potatoes or even prepare them for baking and then having to preheat oven and check them Periodically, etc. etc. Even boiled eggs are awesomely easy!! I set my egg setting to 3 minutes and I get the perfect boiled egg every time! They even peel perfectly!! Even though it seems like things take longer to cook, it takes away the “supervision” step. That’s what I love most about it.

i grew up with pressure cookers and pressure canners, so it wasn't a huge "new" thing for me when i got it. I do love it for doing bulk baked potatoes, bone in turkey breast, chili (that would normally take all day, or even 2 days if using dry beans...), corn on the cob, pork loin, etc... pretty much anything I can do in my slow cooker, I can do in the pressure cooker (it's also great if we forgot to pull meat out of the freezer....which i need to go do....) but i rarely bother looking up actual recipes for things.... I do have 2 of them at the moment, so yeah. i've gone through your 5 stages and come out the other side.. lol... will add... due to some medical issues and a car accident 13 years ago, i deal with some limited mobility and wear out if i have to be super active, including in the kitchen, so using the IP, esp at the end of the day is very helpful for me.... (we also have a rice cooker and an air fryer and an assortment of slow cookers... so there are a lot of options for days that I'm not up for babying the stove top...) it's just myself and my husband (and an assortment of dogs...) at this point, but he travels a lot for work and, well food allergies and a lack of delivery options means i do a lot of cooking... lol...

Early convert here; my family's favourite recipe is the Italian Chicken with Penne. Dinner in less than 30 minutes from the time you pull the IP onto the counter until you're serving. There's quite a few versions of it but once I got the basic measurements (2 cups penne, chicken breasts/thighs, 12 ounces crushed tomatoes, 12 ounces chicken/broth, 1 tablespoon of Italian Seasoning, cream cheese and parmesan) then I've made it my own by adding crushed garlic, various vegetables etc. That's the great thing about the IP, the recipes are just the starting point.

Steel cut oats, meat dishes where the meat is supposed to be shredded at the end, and soups are our things. It is NOT the best tool for some things. I'm going to sous vide steak and chicken that should be sliced after cooking. I'll use a regular pot to make pasta, and I'm not going to use an IP to make popcorn or cheesecake or things like that.
It is great for pulled pork since it takes about 2 hours in the IP as compared to 12+ hours in a crockpot. When I used a crockpot, the smell of pork cooking all day long put me off actually wanting it by the end. We used to put it in the garage to avoid the whole house being strongly scented alllll day long. IP holds the air in so there isn't (much) scent and we don't get sick of it.

My main appreciation for the Instant Pot is that it is a portable pressure cooker. I've been cooking in pressure cookers since the 60's and I enjoy the results. I haven't exactly joined the craze but it is a convenient appliance to cook the main dish while using the stove and oven to cook the rest of the meal. I'm glad it has allayed some of the fear of pressure cooking for the general population and I think the stainless steel is better to cook in than the cast aluminum.

This is really good for making beans (cuts 3 hours of stove-cooking down to 40 minutes when done in instant-pot). It's also good for pressure-cooking artichokes in 20 minutes (which would take hours on a stove). Sweet potatoes/yams & potatoes cook quickly in the instant-pot as well. I use mine every day (so much so that I'm considering getting another instant-pot). But as a whole-food-plant-based eater, I do a lot of cooking from dry items, so it makes sense that I'd use this regularly (esp when batch cooking).
Also, this tip may have been implied but, if you let the instant-pot sit after it finishes cooking, it will decompress itself naturally (so you don't need to use the release valve. Just wait until the white button goes down by itself before trying to open the top of the instant-pot).
And no, it's far from "instant", but again, I find it's a great way to thoroughly cook things that would take longer on a stovetop. :)

I just bought the air fryer lid for the Instant Pot and it's great for reheating pizza (crispy!), frying chicken, and cooking tater tots. I failed at making sweet potato fries, potato chips, and dehydrating figs (lid has a dehydrator mode). My favorite things to cook with the classic IP are beans (no soaking!), chili, kitchari, winter squash, steel-cut oatmeal, and any meat that I forgot to defrost. Oh, and corned beef and cabbage! It might take longer to pressurize and release, but you don't have to keep an eye on it, which is truly the best part about it.

I have no desire to own one of these. My cabinet space is too precious for such a huge appliance.

I had a generic one with a crappy low quality pot/liner. Feel like the named-brand stainless steel was a game changer. I literally love mine so much I upgraded. Have, on 3 occasions now, had both going at the same time (spanish rice in once, chicken enchiladas in the other. ) i LOVE those nights because I get to actually Sit Down after work while dinner cooks its damn self!

Hated mine. Sold it on FB marketplace -- basically made all my money back on it too.

😂❗ I absolutely LOVE my Instapot! It actually saves me countertop space, since it replaces a few appliances at once.

Embarrassed to admit the stages were condensed to one session. Not like microwave but so much more versatile. Love doing baked beans in double batch, doing baked potato then reload with ribs and potatoes crisp while ribs carmelize under broiler. Frozen chicken goes in and then rests in oven while resultant broth cooks rice and carrots.

Carrots...yes! Cuts the time and perfect tenderness.

Yes, stage 5 here too! I’m 100% thankful my SIL got me one as a gift a few years ago. I love that you can cook frozen meat in an hour

Yes, I did. The first thing I cooked was a beef roast and it was ready in less than an hour. My favorite thing to cook is Cabbage.

Yes, cabbage. I swear the house is less smelly when I cook it in the instant pot too.

Stage 1 Excitement that’s what we had at the start of lockdown bc of homeschool but that’s not what it’s like now🤣

If I may be so bold, can I guess that you’re a student and not a parent? 😂 Excitement was not my exact emotion at the start of lockdown either

Stage 2! 😂😂😂 So true! I was terrified to use it for 3 weeks after hearing everyone’s warnings! Really all of this too accurate.

Maybe it’s just my wife and me, but we just pronounce it “instapot”. Fully pronouncing “Instant Pot” sounds so weird and I think I’m getting triggered by it...

I think "Instapot" is actually a brand name, so they were using the generic "instant pot" instead.

I had 4. My dad broke one during a dementia induced rage and I gave 1 away when we went to a tiny house. I kept my mini to be on the counter still (use it several times a week if not daily) and kept my 8qt also.
Have to admit, I had 2-8qt crockpots too. Now I use my IP for things I used to crock so I just have 1 in my storage unit waiting for our storage bldg to be built!
