    Smoking was acceptable on tv back then. So was drinking. String smoked a pipe, but never on camera. And he always performed sober unlike so many others. He was truly a great man. A real down to earth gentleman.

      I never much followed C&W/Bluegrass music. I do remember around that time frame that upon visiting my in-laws they told me some character on Hee Haw had been shot. 45 years later, I see on YT that somebody involved in the "Stringbean" murders was gonna be released from prison. So I watched the video. Stringbean.....Stringbean.....Where had I heard that name before.......Searched my memory Banks awhile (in-laws are both long dead), and it came to me this was who they'd tried to tell me about. After educating myself on this issue, more than ever I'm convinced there's a lot of laws, and damn little justice. The SOB that killed these two wonderful people gave THEM a LIFE SENTENCE: String and his wife will never be back. Now this SOB has been out of prison for several years. Where is HIS life sentence? An eye for an eye? DAMN straight!!!! Somebody oughtta KILL this maggott!!!!!!!!!!

      @@milojanis4901 I truly agree with you. I was brought up to respect the justice system but I just can no longer do that. The SOB's that killed string & Estelle were sentenced to 198 years. Doug died in prison but John confessed to both killings and he only served 40 years. He said he was sorry. He is a changed man. Really? Just because he said he was sorry? The last I heard, string & Estelle were still dead. Where's the justice? So this has destroyed my faith and respect in the justice system. Note: what kind of a man would shoot a 59 year old unarmed woman in the back of her head, on her knees, begging for mercy. She got no mercy.

    A sadly ironic song. The words say the crow helps him to get laughs on Hee Haw and his pocketbook is growing. It was telling folks about how his pocketbook was growing (and carrying thousands of dollars in his bib overalls) that caught the attention of the two swine who killed him and Estelle. I was working with The Stonemans in 1973 and was backstage at the Opry the night he did his final performance. The next day Patsy Stoneman called me and told me String had been killed. I thought she was pulling a prank but sadly it was true. He and Estelle were laid out together in separate caskets at the funeral home. It was hard to believe that I had talked to Estelle the night of String's last performance and here she lay dead. I'll never forget this as long as I live. To those who were in country music at the time this was one of those events that even many years later you can remember what you were doing when you first heard of it. I was 22 years old then. I'm 65 now and the memory is as clear as it was back then. May both String and Estelle rest in peace.

    Good ol Stringbean. You can't help but smile when he plays and sings. Even after all these years he can put joy in your heart. Now that is a true sign of love. Which I might add, we need more of these days.

    • @jehugo66
      @jehugo66 9 лет назад

      Yes-and to me he's new. I wish someone would ask Steve Martin about influences from Stringbean. He was the first of the Banjo playing Comedians, long before Steve Martin and Billy Connolly. Wish I'd been old enough to appreciate and know of him back in 70s as a kid when this must've come out.

    • @DanGellert
      @DanGellert 7 лет назад +1

      He wasn't nearly the first, just one in a long line of greats-- Uncle Dave Macon was the biggest star the Opry had for its first decade, and String's biggest inspiration. I think that banjo String played was given to him by Uncle Dave. Back in the day, if you played the 5-stringer, you were expected to be a comedian as well... When Earl Scruggs started playing with Bill Monroe's band back in the 40's, the fact that he DIDN'T cut up and tell jokes drew nearly as many comments as did his creative and brilliant picking.

    • @ScotchArsh
      @ScotchArsh 7 лет назад

      I remember my mom and uncles telling me how they would hear Uncle Dave on the Opry on Saturday nights. They remember all the whoopin' and hollerin' and stomping around. haha
      I remember Stringbean when I was a kid, early 70s, on all the country music shows. I loved him! He'd have me captivated like none other. The long shirt, the hat flip, etc., made quite a lasting memory.

    There was something almost otherworldly about the late, great David "Stringbean" Akeman in action. He operated on a level of genius to which many aspired but few equalled. Grateful that much of his on stage legacy has survived.

      Probably not. I worked in his band for 2 yrs.. 77-79. He worshipped Dean Martin, and stole a lot of his stage antics. The cig, drink maybe, but you cant hold a TV show being a drunk. I was onstage with him a lot... almost always it was a part of the act.
